Checking this question again, I found this newer text, only in German WIKIPEDIA.
I tried my best to translate it here.

Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offiziersstellvertreter

***

In the German Army of the Kaiserreich the official position of an Offizierstellvertreter (without linking "s")
was already introduced in 1887. The Offizierstellvertreter was ranking higher than "Etatmäßiger Feldwebel",
and below "Leutnant" or the "Feldwebelleutnant". Salutation was always "Vizefeldwebel" or "Feldwebel".

Active "Vizefeldwebel" and "Feldwebel" could be appointed after at least four years of blameless conduct;
reserve soldiers after 8 years. Later also 'Unteroffiziere' (corporals) and 'Sergeanten' (sergeants) could
attain this official position; with the nomination they were to be promoted to 'Vizefeldwebel'.
The number of 'Offizierstellvertreter' was first unregulated, but remained limited to two established posts
per company.

The imagination of military authorities to make things complicated has no limits... smile

I have no idea about Offizierstellvertreters (and yes, those Prussians sure loved to have all kinds of complex titles!), but while we're discussing German military ranks, I've noticed that Rittmeister outranks Hauptmann in WOFF. But actually they are the same rank - captain - which was Rittmeister in the cavalry, and Hauptmann in the infantry and artillery.

Actually it doesn't matter for the DID Campaign because I doubt if any pilot will make it to Hauptmann or Rittmeister winkngrin

Well, it's not a title nor a real rank, but a position - directly translated an Offizierstellvertreter is a "deputy officer".
In the Kaiser's army they were Vizefeldwebel, who had to replace Leutnants.
