Question for the pilots out there:
Obviously he had completed the training to get his pilots license but he just received it in June and soon after took off for the around the world trip on June 19th.
Even if you take the accident out of the story should he have been taking on such a trip at 17, just a week or so after getting his license? Should he have built up his hours and experience before attempting this? I also understand his father was also a pilot so would that have made the lack of experience moot in your opinion?
Thanks

I read your title as he was attempting 'around the flight crashes'. You're missing a comma.

Flying a single engine plane over the ocean is risky, no matter how much experience you have. It's one thing to island hop in the Carribean. Another to fly over vast expanses of the Pacific like Hawaii to California. As a pilot, I wouldn't attempt it and most other pilots I know would say that's a no go situation unless you are in a twin. One common misconception is that water landings are safer then land. They aren't, even into trees.

At least it wasn't a solo attempt, like those parents that let their teenage kid attempt sailing around the world. It's unfortunate when doing something stupid, but goodhearted, turns deadly.

Why did you call it stupid? It was an adventure. Flying a small single engine plane across a large expanse of ocean simply for the adventure of it, is stupid, in my opinion. A brand new, 17 year old pilot attempting it makes it even more stupid. The level of stupidity that this contributes to the situation depends on the experience level of his dad that was with him.

Why did you call it stupid? It was an adventure. Going by Bonchie's post and my opinion on the matter. Adventure is good, but not if it's stupidly executed or stupidly chosen. Seems to me this is akin to putting a kid with a brand new drivers license in a 200mph super car. Like I said though, it's unfortunate they died. We all do stupid things, it sucks when you can't live to learn from the experience.

It was stupid because they crashed and died.
If they had of made it, then it would have been a grand adventure.
Example:
Nungesser was stupid to attempt to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, as he died in the attempt.
Lindberg was an audacious pilot and an adventurer, as he actually flew across the Atlantic Ocean.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

Given all the single engine water crossing in such a trip, first thing that came to my mind was a BRS. That seems a better hope than trying to go in across the waves, if you've got to do it.
