The other day my gaming computer crashed. When I started up I just got the black screen with some message about a corrupt windows file and instructions to put my windows OS disk in the drive. LOL, for the longest time the dvd drive has not been working. The computer does not see it and pressing the open button does nothing. So, you can see my dilemma.
I do the usual things of making sure the power and data cables are plugged in well and even pulled them out and put in different ones. Nothing helped in getting the dvd drive to even open up. So lets try a different dvd drive. I pulled that one out and put in one I knew was working. No luck. Put the one from the gaming computer into my older computer and no response. Put the one from the older computer back into it and it works. So it must be a bad dvd drive.
Somewhere along with doing all that I was unplugging and plugging in the data and power cables into the two solid state drives (ssd). And low and behold, the gaming computer came up just fine. No errors at all. I figured it must be the order of plugging in the drives and restarting the computer that had something to do with it.
But then trying to get either dvd drive to work did not work. I could get the old one to open up. But never did it show up in the list of drives from windows explorer. Then I noticed the second ssd was not showing up. And no matter the replugging of cables the 2nd drive will not show up.
So, I am happy the C drive is operating and Windows is booting fine. But really do want my second ssd to work and the DVD drive to work.
Any help or even explanations would be appreciated.

I will try a brand new data cable, but the drive is not seen and it is a solid state drive.

oh, and the DVD drives are not seen either. not the old one from the older computer or the newer one. I do think the newer one is dead because it is not even seen in the old computer when I switched it out.

well now I have made things worse. My ssd drive that I keep data on that was no longer being read in my gaming computer can't be read or seen in my older computer. So now I have a DVD drive that can not be seen by either computer and a SSD drive that can't be either. I'm so glad that the ssd drive that holds the install of windows 7 came back and I can start the gaming computer. This is so odd.

SOLUTION A - Drive Used to work - Secondary or Storage 1. Check the drive letter and the partition 2. If it is possible, try to recover your data 3. If the drive is NOT detected by the operating system, verify that the drive is detected by the BIOS 4. If the drive is NOT detected by the BIOS verify that the power and data cables are properly connected 5. If the drive is still NOT detected, try to detect it in another computer (internal) or connect it in an external enclosure 6. Connect another drive to the same port 7. Check the return policy and replace the drive I have tried 5 and 6 but not 3 yet. How do I check the BIOS?

so I tried plugging in the SSD and trying the command msinfo32. The SSD did now show up. So I guess it is dead. I suspect there is no way ever to get the data off of it.

maybe there is! got to try this:
Only connect the SATA power connection and not the data cable. A USB enclosure with an external power source will also work.
Once you have the drive connected, simply power on the computer and wait. The computer will need to stay powered on for 20 min and it is recommended that you don't use the computer during this process.
Power the computer down and disconnect the drive for 30 seconds.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 one more time.
Reconnect the drive normally, and boot the computer to your operating system.
Update your firmware, if you are not already at the latest on your drive. Please visit the following link for our firmware updates
