It most certainly does. When you're talking about success or failure in a company that has a global brand and global recognition, being a manipulative jerk is essentially a requirement. At that level of business, it's a cutthroat world of clashing egos. There's no room for nice guys.

Wow, I don't.
I get the showmanship of storming into a vendor meeting where you are a big client and pitching a fit complete with profanity - I've done similar things for effect.
But they were for effect.
Most of the stuff in that article just scream self-entitled jerk, like huffing out of a hotel and chewing out the guy behind the desk, ripping into an old woman who isn't making a smoothie fast enough, being a damned dead-beat dad, and firing people without notice.
But I always figured him for a world class jerk; the funny thing is that a lot of people lionize Jobs as this tech messiah who wasn't in it for the money and then castigate Bill Gates for being successful....when in many ways Gates is a much better human being than Jobs ever was.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

Quite easy, being an egomaniac jerk with razor blades on your elbows will most probably get you far in this world - because most intelligent people would instinctively refuse to act like that. Which is strange, why do socially more competent people not just cut those jerks off, and let them do their antisocial egomaniac stuff ? Laziness ? Fear ?
But this is why some "successful" people aren't the brightest examples under the sun, when it comes to real intelligence.
Steve Jobs was however different, in that respect. He just used this intentionally, which of course does not make him better, regarding social behaviour, sympathy, or empathy. He sure knew his Machiavelli well, and i'm happy i never had to work for him.

Why do people tolerate this kind of behavior? Because they don't care when they're making big money.
On the other hand, if you're the nicest guy on the planet but they're NOT making money, they will stab you in the back and kick you to the curb faster than you can say "Hi!"

The Jedi Master Exactly. Being the "nice guy" is good if you are working for a charity or you're something like a social worker. It doesn't work in the business or political world.

Did Reagan ever behave like a jerk ? A lot of people are firm when they need to be but there's a touch of class of wielding authority without coming across like a total a-hole. I worked for very successful people who inspired their subordinates without doing a Steve Jobs. So I don't buy the suggestion that you have to be a world class jerk to make it in the corporate world. Invariably a lot of the excuses that people make for being abrasive is to validate their desire to be total nasty c*nts....typically using justification such as "I make a lot of money and I am technically brilliant so it gives me a license to be a c*nt" Steve Jobs is talented and brilliant but still does not change the fact he is a total jerk.

Why does everyone act like it's the successful people only, I can't tell you how many jerks are just all around in the real world.
I'm dealing with a mediocre NCO who pushes me around and it a jerk for the sole sake he can because he is in my chain of command and out ranks me. Heck, I sat at work for an extra hour after coming into work an hour earlier than anyone else, because he just felt he might need me to stick around when we both new well and good he wasn't going to need me.
It isn't just the military, go to Walmart and see people go full arsehole, this isn't to mention the servers I see get treated like dirt when I eat out.
The other night, I was at McDonald's to use their internet and get a glass of tea. I was waiting in line when this lady walks right past the people in line, we didn't say anything, thinking she just needed like a BBQ sauce or something. When the clerk asked who could she help next, the lady started giving this huge order. When we started grumbling and someone called her a #%&*$#, she blew up on that guy about being a misogynist.

Did Reagan ever behave like a jerk ?
Actually, he did. But he was an actor, and he knew how to keep it out of the cameras and the public eye. He presented the image he wanted to present to the outside world, but his inner circle knew the REAL Ronnie and he was just as arrogant a jerk as any other. I'm sure the Democratic heads of Congress knew that one well enough when he met with them in closed door sessions to get his agendas done. Some more recent leaders we've had have utterly failed at the public/private thing, and we've seen the real side all too often. That in turn makes them less effective leaders as they're not liked as much, even when paradoxically they're being more honest with us and letting us know that yes, they're jerks. The Jedi Master

Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Richard Branson, Rupert Murdoch, Bobby Knight, etc., etc.
All of these people were/are universally considered to be abrasive, confrontational and rude.

When it comes right down to it Jobs was a smart and successful jerk, nothing more, nothing less.

I'd say jerks get to high positions because:
a) as Timothy said, there are lots of them, sooner or later one will be successful. For every one d*ickhead CEO there are 100 more d*ckheads within the company waiting to be a CEO.
b) because corporate environments are full of assholes and they know very well that the path to success is to associate themselves with other assholes. Don't know why, but that's the way it is. Assholes eventually "outperform" hard working people and go up in rank, so the thing to do is just tag along and wait for the opportunity to stab that #%&*$# in the back for you own benefit. I assume this works because people in the higher ranks are also like that, so they don't see any harm in this behavior, "it's competitiveness"... apparently.
When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

That's all jerk behavior, and you can judge a lot about ones character by the way the talk to waiters etc.
