How odd. I thought it was already well understood that everything must add up to nothing. You can even experience the fact directly if you expend the necessary effort and risk to put yourself in the required perspective... It's OK, though, because it becomes immediately apparent that nothing is sacred.
Why would you assume that's well known?

Why would you assume that's well known? Well, it only makes sense: it all started from nothing at the big bang, and things only exist because they haven't all come back together to cancel out. That's what our probing of antimatter is all about - trying to figure out howcome it didn't manage to cancel out right away.

Oh...so the big bang theory...is proven beyond a shadow of doubt?
I thought it was still just a plausible theory with some proof suggesting its still plausible...
But no, I never assumed that big bang theory meant that everything in life zeros out, so its news to me. And I've never heard anyone mention anything of the kind. I'm not suggesting you are wrong, just that it may not be nearly as well known as you think.
Hey, Ladner! I'm originally from just north of you in Richmond! I'm not sure, but I think Fast Cargo was thinking of moving to Ladner.

The only problem with the Big Bang Theory is that while it explains a lot of what has been observed, it still doesn't explain WHY.
So everything started from this one singularity of time, space, and energy...and why exactly did it happen? Where did it come from? Why did it bang?
As soon as cosmology ventures into philosophy you're in trouble. However, the very nature of the BBT, if it's true, means that we can NEVER know. For all practical purposes, "before the Big Bang" is a non sequitur because there WAS no before.
Of course, no one is more frustrated by this than the scientists who WANT to know but must accept by the nature of their own observations that it can never be known because any evidence of anything before is either outside our universe entirely or was obliterated by the event itself.
Oh, the fundamentalist atheists. They are infuriated by not having a definitive answer to shove in the faces of the religious, of course.

There will never be a definitive answer for who or what "started" or "existed" before the Big Bang but there are plenty of definitive answers and evidence debunking Creationism.

Well, certainly the big bang is not regarded as certain, as for one thing its nature is far from understood. Things tend to go pearshaped when working backward round about the 10^-43 second mark.
However, to the extent it is understood and accepted, it implies that everything must add up to nothing, and I would say that means that most of the people who spend any significant amount of time thinking about these things are of that opinion, however tentatively.
Actually, I ran into a bunch of new stuff on "before the big bang" just a couple of weeks ago, now where did I see it? ...Oh, yeah, it's in this month's SciAm. I skimmed it quickly, haven't had an opportunity to sit and dig through it yet. They want to dispense with inflation, and invoke events in the "superuniverse" or whatever they would call it, to explain the start of ours. Of course that just pushes the puzzle back to some"where" else, for incomprehensible values of where.
Regarding "why", that is not a question for which there is any reason to expect an answer, for most questions constructed with it. If you think about the way it is regarded in speech, why is really a question about motivation, which implies conscious intent, and so can only reasonably applied to actions of conscious beings. In most cases, questions why should be replaced by questions "how", which can be reasonably applied to non-conscious material objects. "Why" is hard because it gets into consciousness, which we quite simply don't understand in the tiniest little bit, despite it being the thing we are far and away the most familiar with.
Questions how, on the other hand, just require us to get under the hood of a suite of events, and note the connections of sequences that comprise their structure. However, that limits us to answers only in the realms we have the ability to inspect, by whatever means. As far as the big bang goes, we may or may not ever have access to that.

FYI: This is out on demand on directv if you don't want to go to the theater for it. IMO, better to pay the $7.50 than theater prices, but that's just me. Interesting movie, one people will be thinking about for a while to come. And dayum that chick is hot! The pizza girl too. No wonder they keep ordering it. LOL Cool flick, but does slow down at times. IMO, he missed his "phone call" (meaning for his life) when Bainsley came to get him. I kept thinking Bob was going to tell him that. Too bad. I suppose the end means he gave up on meaning and gave into the idea of just existing from "bang to bang".

Nothing before the Big Bang Theory? Then what caused the bang? What matter came together to make that happen? It seems as though there can never have been a time when there was nothing. And yet you know that everything has to start somewhere. I'm getting a headache!

"Over here, The Simpsons are on before The Big Bang Theory, every Monday."
Ah! Finally...something in this thread that a poor simpleton like myself can understand.
