I am inbound to an airbase. Is there a way I can have the TDC on the airbase so I have a better sense of where it is. So far I always has to ask the ATC for directions every 10 seconds to make sure I didn't miss it.

I figured out that the airbases are listed in the CDU under DIVERT. This only lists the 4 closest bases. How do I get to the next page if mine isn't one of those close ones?

One method:

- Make the HUD the Sensor of Interest;
- Set the CDU to Flight Plan;
- Use DMS Up/Down to cycle through the waypoints until you are at the first one (ie: #0 is where you took off from);
- The a box will be drawn around the waypoint 'location in space' or a tad pole will be drawn showing you which direction, how many degrees and what range the box is when it is off the HUD;

Things which do you no good in aviation:
1) Altitude above you;
2) Runway behind you;
3) Fuel in the truck;
4) The airspeed you don't have.

Set the CDU to Mission. Use the DMS to cycle through all the waypoints until you see the base you are looking for and make that the SPI.

ATC always directs you directly to a point 10 (km? nm?) along the extended runway centerline to the assigned runway. So you aren't being directed to the airport but more some kind of "final approach fix." Of course this may require a 0' radius turn of up to 180° when you get there but that's your problem not ATC's (hint, swing the turn wide). It's not strictly necessary to fly through this imaginary point. Within 10nm you should have the runway in sight and if you line up 5-15nm out at approximately the right glideslope you will get an auto landing clearance closer in (like 3nm).

Flying by looking out the window and "just guessing" is surprisingly accurate but if you really want to nerd it up or heaven forbid the weather is actually bad then...

Turn the WP knob to the mission database setting and find the WP pre-loaded into the nav database for your airport. If memory serves they are in the 50-70 range but you can also find them by typing in their names letter by letter. You can make that your steerpoint and navigate relative to that (for example if you're landing on RWY 21 you would fly to a point 10nm heading 030° away).

Or you could go crazy and use the OSET page to make a new waypoint that is a known distance from the airfield WP for example you would type in 03010 to make a new waypoint ~10nm north of the old one. Then this is the imaginary point ATC is sending you to.

Super crazy would be create a brand new flight plan using the imaginary 10nm point and a threshold point (OSET approx half the length of the runway from the database airfield point). Then set the elevations and FP WP attributes for VNAV to actually produce an ILS-like display on the HSI/ADI that would probably get you under a 500' cloud ceiling in a pinch.
