Does it have to be "Space" Sci-Fi or can it be any dystopic future setting?
Because there's Soylent Green, Clockwork Orange, 1984, 12 Monkeys.....
The setting/ world of Blade Runner is also pretty bleak. No it doesn't have to be space-based. Good pick with 12 Monkeys. I forgot about that one.

- Brazil
because there's no glimmer of hope at the end of the movie. And it's the perfect Kafka movie with all the hilarious absurdity in it. - On the Beach
That film was utterly nihilistic and left me depressed, so I guess it qualifies for this list. - 1984
is probably even more soul crushing than "Brazil" - but the unrealistic element is that this brutal, repressing bureaucracy actually works with a high degree of efficiency. Not bloody likely! - Soylent Green
What's not to love about a Malthusian world view stretched to the extreme, where all surplus people get processed into green pulp for institutionalized cannibalism. The film can't make it to the top however, because - well, it does leave room for speculation that the ending of the film might be the start of some sort of revolution. - 12 Monkeys
Is a strong contender - but in the end, well, again there's this glimmer of hope that with the help of time travel the apocalypse might still be averted with a few more iterations. So, not exactly nihilistic either. - The Thing (John Carpenter remake)
As pointed out, it's likely that the Thing actually survived. It might get frozen again, but the alien invasion of Earth is only postponed - and a defeat is unlikely as the last guy to realize the gravity of the situation is about to freeze to death. - Mad Max
Not exactly a top of the line production, but probably more nihilistic than many others on this list. Not sure if I felt depressed at the end of it, however.

Or it was depressing just for me? I wanted to eat a bullet after that one. The Book of Eli would fit, but it was a Christmas special compared to The Road.

A Clockwork Orange made me fear for the future after I saw a bunch of little hoods in Houston acting EXACTLY like McDowell's character.
Any of the Mad Max movies made swear that if a global apocalypse ever happened, I'm standing under the meteor heading for Earth and checking out with the cool kids.
I've avoided "The Road" for that reason. I'd like to not slit my wrists.

Equilibrium, Gattaca, and The Lathe of Heaven. The whole strictly regimented society concept where the life is taken out of people and everything that makes them human is missing is depressing to me. I have to include Dune in my list, too.

I have to include Dune in my list, too. Certainly not the Lynch "Dune" which had that upbeat "happy" ending that was not in the book but inserted by the insistence of the meddling studio.
