Woody Allen. I know, he still puts out a movie a year (had to look that up) and he won an oscar for one last year. When is the last time you saw one and talked about it? He clearly still has an audience, but not the broad appeal he used to. Unlike Mel Brooks, who changed with the times and went more Broadway (The Producers) to more effectively use his talent when his movie comedy kind of went downhill post-Spaceballs.
I can't really agree on the Wachowskis, since they've hardly directed anything. The Matrix was incredible, but I don't think they hit the big time in directing circles to be able to say they're washed up. One hit wonder? We'll see. I do hope Jupiter Ascending is good.
Uwe Boll....I think he's just second rate to begin with. No big fall there. LOL

Uwe Boll Have to concur. Whereas other have some sort of positive side more often than not, this... person... hasn't. And I really literally mean that.

makes me wonder. many trying to make it to hollywood seek fame be it a scriptwriter or a director. sometimes, just being involved in one film listed on imdb means a lot.
lindleof, shymalan, boll, etc. got the fame alright, but not the positive one. i remember an adage, "doing/working on something you enjoy". you got fame but a bad one, that is totally devastating but... if you're just doing it, surviving in the industry, making a living and honestly enjoying your work it might not matter. uwe boll probably doesn't care what people say of him he just keeps making them

This thread begs another question: is being overrated the fault of the person in question, or are those who do the "rating" responsible (media, fans, producers, actors)? The way I understand Panzer's thread is that some directors are somehow considered to be a lot better than they actually are. That's why I don't get mentions like Boll or Emmerich; surely they have not delivered anything that caused people to consider them "great": they have both been blasted by critics for making horrible B-movies - the latter just had access to A-list budgets. I agree with Panzer about M. Night Shymalatoolazytolookupcorrectspelling and the Wachowski...uhm...siblings: their initial movies surprised everyone to an extent that they got labeled as Wunderkind directors. Wich leads me to another question: how would their follow-up movies have been received by critics and the audience if the expectations hadn't been as inflated as they apparently had been? Ok, the other two Matrix movies were crap regardless (IMO), but the transition from initial "shock" to unintended comedy would have been milder without previous hype and high expectations.

James Cameron. Hasn't done anything of note since "The Abyss".

I agree: Uwe Boll doesn't belong in this thread. Maybe in future he might...but not yet.
A couple of thoughts:
- sometimes, a project is just not gonna be a success...maybe "getting it right" be a mission impossible. Or the public just doesn't want a movie about that, now..or ever. Even if its well made. For instance "buddy cop comedies" after 2001.
- similarly, sometimes a movie just "clicks", not only for the people making it, but also for the viewers who didn't know they were hungering for that kind of movie about that. For instance... There's Something About Mary...a fair size comedy hit that spawned a string of raunchy comedies. Pulp Fiction, Star Wars Ep4...
- thus, the "perfect directors" benefit from the perception it was all them, despite luck and public fickleness playing a huge part.
Tarantino has done a few good movies, but I didnt like all of his. Woody Allen...sure Annie Hall was funny...but the rest of his shtick leaves me cold. Emmerich...sometimes Im in the mood for one of his roller coasters...but the dialog often feels like caricatures of caricatures of cardboard cutout characters. "Hey, I think we need a ____ type in the movie!" "Yea sounds good, get Brenda to write dialogue for ____!"
These days I just wanna know if a movie is worth my time to watch. That's all.
