Panzer Commander WW2 tank sim by SSI - An the attempt to get it working on Windows 7
STATUS:Version 1 WORKS WELL :
Unable to run setup to install the game.(FIXED BELOW)
(Installing off CD fixed by placing this and running it in main install folder, - the one with setup in it and run this instead of actual setup.exe http://toastytech.com/files/Is3Engine.zip)
Version 1.3 NEEDS WORK (Missing Turrets)

How I got it to work windows 7 64bit

1. Get Panzer Commander Internet, Amazon, Ebay an ISO file or whatever.. Beware some versions off the net are incomplete.
2. Install with old installshield posted above
3. next to get it to work on newer systems, you will have to basically turn all the anti alaising off and a lot of other stuff on your video card options for that program. Turn off Vertical Sync, vsync.
4. Do everything in this video for it to run better on 1 processor http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/cpu-affinity/
5. Download the latest patch version 1.3 all and patch it up. In game should say 1.3 now on loading screen http://www.datafilehost.com/d/f55c2e14
6. If you are having cd trouble or lost your cd use this no-cd fix http://megagames.com/fixes/panzer-commander-0
7. Download Dxtory to lower your fps way down to around 20-15fps
8. You need to run the game with Dxtory running minimized
go into advance menu and put limit FPS to 9-15 around there.
I have mine set at 9. Change processing threads to 1 not sure what it does.
now on movie option tab type in the same fps as you put in your advanced section
and check sync video fps
9. Version 1.3 has a huge missing turret and invisible ground problem, you know you are running 1.3 by particle effects when firing mg at building or red arrow on top of screen that point to distant enemy. Getting this version working without invisible stuff is what everyone is working on
10. have fun

If you are having trouble with game freezing with the external tank views or gunner views and blank sky screen you need to lower your FPS (dxtory) as well as graphic card setting for that program.
If your game is shaking like crazy like mine was then it's your fps and use Dxtory or another fps lowering program

Thanks to the forum users who gave me guidance and knowledge on how to make this work

Video on the way not 1.3 though :\

John I only have the demo of that game which I have on win 7 for my children. Since it's an old game 2 things come to mind:

1) have you tried applying compatibility settings?

2)Games form that era do not in general like AA .Have you tried playing/disabling the AA in your Nvidia or ATI gpu settings?

That what I do with Panzer Elite, which by the way is way better than this game , has better graphics and game play and is form the same era.

1. Yes I have tried all of them with no avail to graphics problem, I have even tried cpukiller program. Nothing works to fix graphics problem.

2. Yes all aa disabled in nvidia settings. The horrible graphics flickering is the only problem and playability seems to be pretty good.

The funny thing is the faster I go or let ai go to waypoint, the more jittery the graphics get. If I drive slow or stop then I don't see the problem as much. I'm still trying a bunch of settings as of now.

after seeing longbow2 come back to life on newer systems and better than the original, this shouldn't left out. I'm trying different stuff, please post If you have this game going going good on vista 7 or 8.

You said you tried CPUKiller. Did you set it low enough so your FPS were below 48 fps.

If I had to guess, the timing code did not expect a CPU cycle would ever be larger then an unsigned 32 bit.

wow that is odd my fps doesn't normally show up in tank screen at bottom only with fraps on! Cpu killer doesn't help even at highest slow-down with fps. I set the affinity command to use only 1 processor on Panzer.exe shortcut but doesn't help with fast shaking of graphics and external view is gone I think everyone had a problem with that. I will to find an old d3d wrapper..

A d3d wrapper allows direct 3D applications to run on OpenGl systems. I doubt that is going to help. Windows 7 ships with DirectX 10. DirectX 9 was the last version that was 100% backward compatible. If you don't already have that, you should grab it form MicroSoft.

By the looks of your video, the shaking is proportional to the fps shown. You could try opening other programs to slow down your CPU even more, and then check the fps while running fraps. You video looks much smoother when the fps are near 40.

Some old programs also have problems with page files and RAM that are larger then 2 gigs. I had to rewrite PEs configuration utility, because it would show a negative value if the video card had more then 2 gigs of ram.

Thanks Britt44! I am happy to report that I was able to get this game running fine under windows 7 64. I reduced my FPS as Britt44 suggested using a program called Dxtory running minimized in tray. I was still having some trouble at 40FPS so I put limiter on 20FPS on the advanced and movie sections of the program. I'm currently going over other options in the program to fine tune it as well as lower or raising FPS more.

Able to use all in game settings with no problems including real physics .

Able to use external view chase cam with no blank color screen.

Jittery and dizzy graphics are gone when tank is moving fast.

Works 100% in Windows 7

The graphics are not so hot but this is a really fun game guys and the physics make it pretty nice.

You get almost 90 vehicles to play with or against!

The Germans have 27 vehicles
The Soviets have 19 vehicles
The US has 17 vehicles
The British have 25 vehicles
Different cannons and mg bunkers

-Career campaigns for each of those countries.

-Over 40 single mission scenarios for all the sides combines

-3 types of camo - desert, regular and snow for the vehicles.

-gives vehicle stats like gun type, armor and speed for each

-multi-player and comes with single mission/campaign builder

-there are no troops

Incredible ! I'm trying to make it to work since some years now; Panzer Commander was my first tank simulator; I have played it again, again and again. And now, it works nicely with windows seven x64 bits and Dxtory (40fps) !

But, my only problem is that the turret of the tank is partially invisible and I could see some houses through the hills and forests. It seems I have some problem with d3d. How could I correct this problem ? have you some ideas John84 ?

Make sure you patch it to 1.3 the latest. Turn all anti-aliasing off on graphics card for panzer commander. I was missing turrets and had see through turrets as well when I used compatibility mode. I unchecked compatibility mode and don't use it now. Also if you have more than 1 processor launch game using this http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/cpu-affinity/

Also 40 fps was too high for me and would cause teh blank screen, had to turn it down to 15.

This is how my graphics card settings look maybe I can turn some on, I will have to experiment more. The see through hill problem is mentioned in the game FAQ. They really can't do much for that I guess. It doesn't happen very often I have noticed.

Amazon and Ebay have them, some with the manuals still. It's very hard to find any info on this game off the web. panzercommander.com doesn't exist anymore of course. I'm not sure if this is abandonware but my guess is that it is since company is no longer.

Here is a video. I did a scenario with snow and me playing as a sherman (jumbo sherman I think) team, panthers got me at the end after knocking out my engine. Still working on a way to improve the graphics while keeping the FPS down.

You can play as German, Soviet, US or British in campaign mode or single player missions as any of those as well.

I am going to change to gunner and loader voice to silence or just something shorter as it gets a bit annoying when you want them to search for targets by pressing T.

Could not find the full 1.3 patch in existence off the web so uploaded it for anyone who wants it.

The readme is in the patch.

Thank you very much for the quick reply ! In my haste, I forgot to tell you that my game is patched in....1.4 version... This is an unofficial version you have to find because it adds, corrects and improves a lot of things. I do not have the official list of changes and unfortunately I can not find a valid link to share to you and I have no more the version of this patch in my HD. In fact, I keep since years a version of the game previously patched in 1.4. I just have to re-install a basic version of the game and replace it with my 1.4 installation. I'm at work at the moment and I am very impatient to coming home to test your advice.

Btw, I have a gtx 680 eVGA classified (nvidia) and no problem at 40 fps for the while and no need for other utilities than the one you propose above. Need more tests perhaps. I'll report you later wink

http://members.quicknet.nl/w.hakkenberg/Panzer%20Commander.htm

Here the link of the guy who had realised the 1.4 version. A 1.5 version was in development but the guy has disapeared tragically....It is sad because the 1.5 promised...However, you could always download some new scenariis and a 26th Panzer Division career (26 additional scenariis) !

Old geforce GT220 here. Thanks for the link but 1.4 doesn't look so great and it's unofficial. 1 problem I ran into during install was installing the windows 95 directx files. I think I am playing in software mode. I have seen the game from the old screenshots in 3dfx drivers and it looked a lot better. Is there a way to put the old drivers in the game folders and use the them instead.? Also voodoo 2 had one that chanced 16bit games to 32bit graphics. I have no clue which folder to or how to do this surgery. Voodoo 2 was confirmed to work with PzC. Perhaps any of these? http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo2.htm

I could not let you tell that. You have to remember that at this '98 year, we all was equipped with 56k modem. Alex Hackenberg was a rare person to take a real interest in Pzc and to suggest mods for this game. For you, today, it is not GREAT, I could understand, but for us, it was awesome. What he proposed is not much and barely reaches some 37 mo but he still had created two new 24-bit maps for his campaigns, fixed the Stuart oversized shadow, added graphical and pre settings options and shared to us three campaigns; anzio with the 5th armored Division (US), the 1st Armoured Division (Brit) and the 15th Panzer Division (Ger). Now, I could enjoy more than 15 career from russian, german, british and us side !

Anyway, I have not managed to display the game properly by following your advices...Have to find an another way. Otherwise the game doesn't ctd anymore with Dxtory. This is a first step !

Thank you for that wink

By the way, I remembered last night, after our discussion, that at this time, I used CD-ROM to store my datas and I found this cd in my archive box with all the patches including version 1.4 ! If you're interested, let me know;)

Best regards,

Wörghern

John84,
You need a wrapper to simulate Glide. I use this one http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/

run the installer and place it in it's own folder. I have mine installed on my D drive, so you can install in prety much anywhere. Once installed, you will find a configuration program in the wrappers folder.

Thanks for the info Worghern and Britt44. I'm not going to try with the 3dfx stuff I guess put so many glide.dll files on this machine before that, many on here already they are running into each other.

I just made ALL vehicles in the game playable. If anyone wants them to make missions with in editor. There are over 90 human playable now, and yes you can play half-tracks, armored cars and drive regular trucks around as well. If anyone is interested I will upload the files.

Hello. I was able to recreate your problem by using the game in windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode, just right click game exe and un-check the compatibility mode in the games icon properties. Why does windows 98 compatibility mode do this to the game? I am still trying to figure out. I have nothing checked at all in this tab. If you have run in 256 colors checked uncheck that also. An easy way to show how your vehicles will show up is just by using the view vehicles models tab before game.

Thanks John84, but, as I said to you I didn't use compatibility mode at ALL. And, I have this problem despite everything...Otherwise, no more CTD with Dxtory, this is a first step...if, I could resolve this display, it will be very nice !

Have you patched to 1.3? Should say on start-up screen

-Fixed: The "Missing turret" phenomena.

indicates was patched in version 1.2 in FAQ

Also try to lower FPS in dxtory.. Too high fps will do this!!!!!!

Other than that trial and error until models are solid I guess.

Thanks again for your advices Jo....I'm at work right now so I will test those tips when I'll come back home. I'll report you later ! Btw, I'm using 16 fps like you via Dxtory wink

I had the 'displaced turret' problem trying to play PzC in XP. Now I have Vista 64 (GPU Nvidia 250 GTS) I don't have this problem (thanks to the tip on limiting FPS I no longer get a lockup starting a mission - 20 FPS set in Dxtory).

I'm using the PzC 1.4 unofficial patch which adds a longer view distance, more missions etc.

In the compatibility tab, I have ticked all of the following:

Compatibility mode - Windows 95
Disable Visual Themes
Disable Destop Composition

The last two settings may be worth trying, Worghern.

It's nice to be able to play the PzC Wittmann Villers Bocage mission again...

...but it's hard to go back to this...

...after playing this...

...or even this...

Still PzC can be fun. As can M1 Tank Platoon II...

...and of course, Panzer Elite...

Now, if only there was a way to get anti-aliasing or a higher screen resolution in Armored Fist 3, I'd be in tanksim nostalgia heaven..

Panzer elite is a pretty neat game. I have played steel beasts in the past and originally was looking for a ww2 mod for that but it never happened. Arma 2 has a decent mod i44 with w2 tanks and infantry. The only problem I see in P.C. is the lack of troops and graphics but this was the 90's and was expected. I enjoy playing PC over panzer elite for some reason the playability for me is more enjoying. The problem with mods is that users start to modify the armor penetration values and then it starts to become more of an arcade game. I will check out that unoffical Panzer Commander patch 1.4 if you have a link? I will take playability and accuracy over graphics any day

I would say that Steel Fury is playable and accurate too, though the more sophisticated commands take getting used to...and of course you have infantry a-plenty...

...and night missions, complete with illuminating rounds...

...and the occasional idiot who turns his lights on when he thinks the shooting has stopped...

Plus the AT guns aren't all in bunkers...unfortunately for this lot...

The thing I like about PzC - as with M1TP2 - is the overall package...in PzC's case, including a rousing musical score and a good range of well-presented single-player campaigns. And the vehicle physics are good, with nicely-animated track and vehicles which roll convincingly over the ground, with none of PE's 'cardboard tank teetering'. PE I thought a good deal better in every other respect, though, once modded.

Yeah, it seems we are talking the same language here ! I'm always playing all those games. You have forgotten iPanzer 44, Zeewolf's WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs TIGER and we should have to add T-72 Balkans in Fire, Sabow and Graviteam tactics. ok for the last, this is not a sim but a tactical sim. Otherwise, what a pleasure to see these beasts in action: T-55, T-62, M60, + all the ww2 stuff !

-Steel Fury : Karkhov 1942 + NTA
-Zeewolf's WWII Battle Tanks: T-34 vs TIGER
-Panzer Elite PE-X (too impatient to enjoy it with 1BobR's OSTPAK MOD)
-Steel Armor:Blaze of War
-Steel Beasts Pro 3.0
-iPanzer44
-Panzer Commander

...not authentic sims but very good immersion as well...
-Invasion 44
-War Thunder (beautiful tanks!)
-Iron Front (for Arma 3)
-World of Tanks

-M1TPII
-Armored fist 3

...and wait and see for Armored Warfare !

My prefered is definitively Steel Fury : Kharkov 1942 + NTA. As we said; Old love will never forget...

Thanks for the tips 33Lima, impatient to test it tomorrow !

For some reason, I am getting the displaced turret graphic glitch again, from time to time. Not sure why - perhaps I satrted PzC too soon after starting DXtory, which seems to need a few seconds to 'settle down' after it has loaded; but exiting and re-starting PzC, always seems to fix it.

Glad to hear. Yes it must take a little time to settle in and work before game starts. I tried that patch-mod 1.4 and had no problems also installed the scenario pack and it was great. Saw the awesome sky as well and terrain.

The only problem I get is when I exit the game through menu, I get a dxtory.dll engine error and I fixed it with disabling vsync and triple buffering on graphic card options made it go away.

Also If I cycle between tank internal views real fast it freezes.

No other problems to report although someone needs to make a 32 bit graphics mod biggrin

Also one more thing I found that this game uses the old windows way to tab/minimize to desktop and the new way freezes it. I just double tab windows key if i need to minimize for a second. I don't remember the old way.

Dxtory hangs on exiting PzC leaving panzer.exe still running in Task Manager but is fine again when I end panzer.exe in TM. also the internal views are sort of superimposed with the external view visible around their edges.

Generally all seems well tho. started a 21st Panzer Div campaign and was immediately reminded how well the campaigns are presented, complete with text unit history and audio campaign intro.

We were in Panzer IIIs with the short 50mm gun. First mission was an advance to contact, in March 1941, part of Rommel's opening moves on arrival in Lybia.

Got the platoon into wedge formation and accelerated away. We actually had another platoon of Panzer IIIs on each flank. The boys on my left stopped and started shooting early on, engaging targets I couldn't see amidst the rolling sand dunes ahead.

As we neared the wadi ahead the right-hand platoon, which had kept moving, swung left and the six of us were mixed up for a while until I veered further left and created a bit more space for us.

The vehicle physics are most impressive with the suspension doing its thing and the tanks pitching gently as they move, slowing down going uphill and speeding up on the other side.

The controls are fairly simple too. I quite happily used the simple targeting mode in the external view, when we started to encounter the first British troops; a Bren Carrier then some infantry with emplaced Vickers Guns. The crew voices are basic but quite well done, likewise the sound effects, apart from the rather weak engine/track sounds.

Coming up to a village we encountered more MGs and light armour. Lurking just the other side was a Crusader tank, though, who knocked out my number two at very close range.

I tried to back up but ran into my number three. Swerving right I got behind a building then roared forward again right up beside the Crusader. The ensuing shoot-out degenerated into a bit of a farce with both of us hitting with no result...

...until I remembered that I was still firing the HE rounds I had loaded for the previous targets. A change to AP did the trick.

Rattling off again with my number 2 in tow again, we clobbered some more Vickers Guns as I slowly began to get the hang once more of PzC's keystrokes and platoon fire control capabilities.

The unbuttoned tank commander viewpoint is also a good position from which to fight in PzC. It's all coming back to me!

I was only credited with a partial success...

...but apart from the loss of one tank, the results had not been too bad...

Not a bad start to my 21st Panzer campaign - my first in Panzer Commander for about ten years!

The in-game graphics are pretty crude and I wish the German tanks didn't have those Hollywood turret and hull front crosses but it's fun, playable and effective...and oh, for the days when sims packaged their campaigns like Panzer Commander does!

alt-tab is the old way to swap screen focus. And, I would not be supprised if loosing focus causes a crash as there is a lot to reset on a modern video card.

I am fairly sure I member you having access to RockingHarry's physics scenerio where the concessus was that accelerating downhill in a manual transmission can only be done if the driver depresses the clutch or the driver lets the engine free rev, possibly causing catastrofic damage. WW2 tanks do not have jake brakes.

I don't mind getting bashed for not releasing the build that half fixed the pivot speed
Code:
   angleX=(rightAngleX+leftAngleX)/2;
/*   if( angleX != entry->objRotX )
   {
	   float AngleChange = angleX - entry->objRotX;
	   if( AngleChange > 0 )
	   {
		   if( AngleChange > GravitySpeed )
			   angleX = entry->objRotX + GravitySpeed;
	   }else{
		   if( AngleChange < -GravitySpeed )
			   angleX = entry->objRotX - GravitySpeed;
	   }
   } */

but I do take acception at the cardbord tanks comment, combined with the accelerate down hill as impressive, comment. Considering, that you helped beta this ancient piece of code.
Code:
	if (Slope>5.0f)
	{
		MaxSpeed*=1.0f+(lpCSV->Weight/(91.0f-Slope));
		if (MaxSpeed>lpCSV->MaxSpeedRoad && Slope<60.0f)
			MaxSpeed=lpCSV->MaxSpeedRoad;
	}

Sorry if my ego got the better of me, but every released map in existance for PE is basicly graphics over hard packed earth.. I took this long to write this, I might as well post it.

wink SteveP. I've gotten better. I don't need 24 hours to recognize a rant, but I still hate Dems.

Hi Aldo!

I'm not sure what your issue is with a vehicle which has slowed, going up a slope, speeding up again, when the slope disappears or reverses - seems perfectly reasonable.

As for 'cardboard tanks' in PE, I don't recall RockingHarry's mod although I do remember we discussed this years back I still see tanks move jerkily at times, like they are teetering on the edge of a sharp fold in the ground - the effect of angular spots in PE terrain combined with that hard-packed earth...and perhaps vehicle suspension issues? Albeit nowadays that is in PE3, where terrain also seems often to exercise considerable drag, slowing down tanks below their pre-PE3 speed. I recall you mentioned the likely cause of the latter effect, some re-working in in PE3 being needed.

Not being a great fan of the eastern front I would happily play PE-x with stock Italy, Full Monty and (my favourite) Britpak '44 - is it right that these mods would need to be re-worked, to be compatible with your new 'exe?

Ivor

33Lima,
the only issue I have with reverse slope acceration is that it needs to be assumed that the driver is making some effort not too free rev the engine and control the decent speed. There is a line of thought by rivit counters that rag doll physics need to let the unit free fall unless the player makes some input.

You can play the original Italy campaign using PEx, PP2x or PE3. PP2X has the most work at improving that campaign.

Sorry if I hijacked the thread.

Is the PzC tank recoil realistic? Seems too much recoil maybe it is.

Possibly, if this is anything to go by:

...but if so, it's not the only one to exaggerate recoil effects:

In the real footage, don't let the cameraman recoil fool you. Watch the Tiger and compare it's movement to a fixed point. It would be sweet is SF's camera moved slightly, similar to the camerman.

Yes that's exactly what I mean. The camera jerks but the hull of the Tiger in the Propagandakompanie film doesn't seem to move at all, nor does the second cameraman, when he's standing on the rear deck. By comparison, the CM clip, tho superficially convincing, looks very exaggerated.

You can play the original Italy campaign using PEx, PP2x or PE3. PP2X has the most work at improving that campaign.

Sorry if I hijacked the thread.

And now I'm straying further off topic here...but is it not currently possible to play PE-x with Britpak '44 (or Monty -vs- Rommel)...other than by using PE3?

Agree, but when your 3D model does not have a seperate gun barrel object to recoil, your only option is to rock the entire tank.

Hmmm, if I deactivate directdraw...the display is...psychedelic dizzy

BTW, it is not possible to change directly the directdraw cause it's included in windows seven...So, I have to install directx.cpl from directx9.0c..

No good, then. Have you installed DX 9.0c yet? all of it? IIRC Rise of Flight re-installs 9.0c with every RoF update so I have that. As you probably know, multiple versions of DX are said to be able to co-exist at the same time. Maybe you need an earlier version, although DXdiag just reports the most recent (DX 11 in my case, with Vista 64).

Worghern,

Only DirectDraw Acceleration should be disabled. I would not disable DirectDraw entirely. The "psychedelic color" issue is an old DirectDraw compatibility issue that showed up with Vista. I am running Panzer Commander on two Windows 7 rigs with no issues. I would suggest making sure that DirectX is fully up to date on your rig, as well as your video drivers. Along with ensuring that only DirectDraw Acceleration is disabled, I would suggest changing the color depth to 16 Bit, for the sake of compatibility.

I have checked all of these but nothing to do. of course, I deactivate only ddraw.I have change my desktop display to 16 bits but nothing to do. This is different but alays psychedelic crappy thing on game...However, I would like to thank you very much for your help wink Hope we will find a solution ! wink

Unfortunately, the only thing I can determine is a hardware conflict with your graphics card, which cannot be resolved. I have seen similar oddball compatibility issues with both Destroyer Command and Silent Hunter II, which use the same Janus-based engine as Panzer Commander. I have run Panzer Commander successfully on the following rigs:

Two (2) Toshiba L25-S1216s @1.6GHZ, 1.5GB RAM w/ ATI RADEON Xpress 200 (a very low end integrated graphics chip from the mid-2000s) running Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the latest versions of DirectX 9.0C and OEM drivers.

One (1) Toshiba C655 @2.3GHZ, 4GB RAM w/ Intel Graphics running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 with latest drivers and DirectX

One (1) EMachines W3503 @3.4GHZ, 2.0GB RAM w/ NVIDIA GeForce 210 (ATI Radeon Xpress 200 disabled) running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with latest NVIDIA drivers and DirectX. ***This NIVIDA Card has known hardware compatibility issues with Ultimation's Sim Engine (Silent Hunter II, Destroyer Command and Panzer Commander*** [see note below] This machine did not experience the known compatibility issues associated with this card for Panzer Commander.

One (1) ASUS G60 JX with 2.3GHZ Quad Core Intel Core i5 (1st Gen), 4GM RAM w/ NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M running both latest drivers and OEM 187.66 drivers (OEM drivers currently running to work around BSOD issues with newer, universal NIVIDIA drivers) with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and DirectX up to date.

[NOTE: The NVidia cards have a sketchy history running Ultimation's sim engine. In the case of the GeForce 210, all three games run fine...in stock. When the "Projekt Messerwetzer" patch from SubSim is applied to either Silent Hunter II or Destroyer Command, the transparent polygon bug appears, as well as numerous graphics artifacts that make the menus useless. It is a known hardware incompatibility.]

I am confident with the fixes I have recommended on Subsim and have been passed to here. To be quite frank, it sounds like your graphics card is encountering the same, nasty hardware incompatibility I and others have observed with some Nvidia cards running the Ultimation sim engine. There are no fixes for it. To be fair, the psychedelic color glitch is something I have not encountered with polygon-based games. It is prevalent in sprite-based games, however.

As a last resort, I will add the registry entries for forcing DirectDraw compatibility for the game. I observed on all of the above machines that particles do render better with the registry patches, although the game runs fine without it. Again, only the machines running XP required disabling DirectDraw Acceleration. the Windows 7 machines required no adjustments.

Panzer Commander DirectDraw Compatibility entry x86
Save as, "Panzer Commander x86 Registry Patch.REG"
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw\Compatibility\PanzerCommander]
"Name"="panzer.exe"
"Flags"=hex:00,08,00,00
"ID"=dword:374454a3

Panzer Commander DirectDraw Compatibility entry x64
Save as, "Panzer Commander x64 Registry Patch.REG"
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectDraw\Compatibility\PanzerCommander]
"Name"="panzer.exe"
"Flags"=hex:00,08,00,00
"ID"=dword:374454a3

Bear in mind that BOTH registry patches are needed for 64-bit operating systems. 32-bit operating systems only need the x86 patch.

Given your hardware and my awareness of known conflicts, I do not think this will help, although others may find them useful. I suspect strongly that your video card's hardware is the problem and little can be done to rectify this issue.

front page now tells you since later versions of windows won;t run setup.exe you need to copy everything from cd and put it in a folder on your pc. then run uni-extract on setup.exe to extract files into the folder.

still working on a better method for turrets to become visbile

Also the game is listed as working with 3DFX, If I could play longbow 2 with 3dfx on windows 7, this game should work . We need to figure out a way to activate 3dfx mode on this game. Still a long ways to go...

There are still many problems that the community hopefully could help sort out. New ways fixes etc. My fix on front page isn't the best. If you have a fix please post the steps or files..

Dxtory seems not to be workign with it anymore. If we can figure out the graphics problem causing it we can fix the game, is it clipping?

can't remember what i did to get it to work, maybe i added a graphics .dll file or something in the folder.

Individual patch tries:

I have tried installing a clean base copy of panzer commander 1.0

then after that installed a patch called 1.0 - 1.1 This version (along with 1.0) is the highest I can go without graphics problems using dxtory.

Installing 1.0 - 1.2 or 1.1 - 1.2 is were trouble starts with graphics.

It seems SSI botched the 1.2 graphics and 1.3, either that or an .exe issue. what they did or added I don't know.

I noticed that mods like the 1.4 patch and the Skypack as well as later scenarios are difficult to locate online. I recently found all my old files for the 1.4 patch, scenarios, and Skypack for the game and wonder if these couldn't be hosted somewhere for the benefit of those who would like to try this game or longtime fans who would like to see it not disappear as seemingly has Alex Hakkenburg (sp?) who created most of these.

I, for one, would be interested. Haven't played this game for many years. What is the Skypack?

what a coincidence i have just been working on finding a fix for this one on the weekend and with the help of another forum thread over VOGONS https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=44052
i have gotten it fixed and running on windows 10 - no crashes and no invisible textures! finally after all these years
-
and whats great is that you have now two options for getting Panzer Commander to work - i was trying with DXWND, but just couldnt solve the textures issue, so i raised it on the dxwnd discussion forum (this was before i foudn the VOGONS thread) and Gho there, the creator of dxwnd has discovered the cause of the texture issue and DXWND can solve it (along with using a ddraw.dll file that you can get from either the ddwrapper mentioned in the VOGONS thread or grabbing it from the Dgvoodoo wrapper zip file.
https://sourceforge.net/p/dxwnd/discussion/general/thread/8ad18d1f4f/?limit=25#3046

you can even use dxwnd to have the game recognise a disk image rather than the physical disk - i have hte physical disk, but if choose to just use an image instead i have to select in the i/o section of dxwnd to hide empty drives.

i hope you will have much success now with getting panzer commander working

(if you go with the VOGONs thread option then also just note to keep the option of forcing directdraw emulation set to '0' in the config file for the wrapper if you wish to use hardware graphics acceleration in the game and not software mode)

Finally ! It's WORKING !!!!

Hi Agathosaimon,

Thank you !

I'm using Gho's PzC.dxw and tip "No HAL device" option in Directx(2) tab; haven't success to make it to run with acceleration option....

hi yeah, its weird i actually did get it working with acceleration going for a moment using the DDwrapper option but now i cant seem to replicate it so i dont know what happened there, will just have to stick with directdraw software mode for now
- unless i get dxtory which sounds like a way to fix it all but its expensive to buy

Thanks for your help.

PS: i'm trying to make it work with M1tp2 but douldn't find the way to make it work with high resolution...

for me i had to use the CDrom for Panzer Commander outside of DXwnd

if you get it working through Dxwnd there is a option to hide empty cd drives so then you can use a CD rom image

M1 TP2 is working very well through Dxwnd now too - there is a youtube vid showing this and the person has the dxwnd m1tp2 config file they use for it and it works and works fine with Glide option too (you must have nglide installed of course)

Hi Guys, i know this thread is old, but could someone post the actual easiest way to get Panzer Commander and maybe Panzer44 to work under Windows 10 or maybe Win98 VM?
Thanks in advance!

So I'm working on recovering the old Wargamer Scenario Depot.

These are the missions that were on the Wargamer Depot for Panzer Commander; broken down by what I could recover:

Out of 165 downloads, only 13 (7.8%) were recovered.

If you have any of the missing stuff, can you please PM me? Thanks.

https://archive.org/details/wargamer-depot_PanzerCommander

This file contains recovered Wargamer Scenario Depot data from two sources:

1.) The 2015 Dump at https://archive.org/details/WargamerGamesDepotArchive20160514.tar

2.) A Internet Archive Downloader Dump in April 2021 to recover what was stored on the Internet Archive's backups.

Out of 165 downloads, only 13 (7.8%) were recovered directly from the two above sources. However, a post on the SimHQ.com forums brought me into contact with the user "33lima", who sent me two ZIP files containing Panzer Commander Scenarios, from which I was able to recover x more scenarios, bringing the final total to 77 recovered (46%).

BONUS:
Two ZIP files that I received from "33Lima" containing Panzer Commander Scenarios.

I recently installed Panzer Commander and this thread was a great help to my eventually succsesfully setting it up on my system.

I have 2 installs, version 1.0 with dgvoodoo 2 which greatly improves the graphics, and version 1.3 with the agrit ddraw.dll and config which removes the turret visibility bug but produces an image without anti-aliasing.

If any of the members still have patch 1.4 squirreled away somewhere I would appreciate a PM.

I set up PCem on my win7 system over the last two days with Win98se and emulated voodoo 3 3ooo graphics, and PC ver 1.3 looks nice with the ddraw atmospherics that you don't get using a dgvoodoo 2 wrapper on win7. There are jaggies, but they're not too bad.

PC ver 1.0 with no jaggies but also no atmospherics using a dgvoodoo2 wrapper on win7.

I was using the agrit cfg and ddraw files which eliminate the turret visibility bug on PC ver 1.3 on my win 7 system, but it only renders in software mode which looks terrible.
