This has happened a handful of times to me including yesterday. Typically when I'm in a fight and there is a really loud sound such as fabric tearing off a wing or a minor collision the sound of my engine goes away and all is silent. I can hear other planes around me but my engine is completely silent. When I finish my mission and launch a new one all is as it should be.

Very odd Glubber. Sometimes I start prepping for a crash-landing as I think my prop is dead. More than once I made for the lines thinking that I need to make it back by gliding.

Had this happen a few times also. One thing I noticed yesterday, cockpit view. No sound. Go to chase view, I have sound. Engine that is.

Never had that, maybe try updating sound card drivers to the latest. Some on motherboard ones are not updated often.

I have a brand new Mobo just installed a month or two back so think we can rule that out unless there's something wrong with those drivers and I need to install an earlier/later version. I haven't been gaming other titles lately so I can't speak to that.

Sure. A brand new motherboard is probably the worst for bugs wink. Drivers are usually always updated to fix various bugs. New doesn't necessarily mean fixed. Also it's just one possibility -there could be many reasons. Memory avail, swap file, drivers, who knows.

This was also documented on a video a while back, one of Hellshade's I believe... I think Robert may have had it happen on one of his too...

Happened to me this morning in a quick combat DF. The upper wing of a Pfalz collided with the wheels on my Spad. At first I also thought my engine went kaput. I checked other views and all that I tried had my engine sound missing, but not the sound of other planes.

I think the pilot is in shock and has temporary hearing loss. pilot

I've heard enough people mention it Mudwasp and have had it happen to myself at least a half-dozen times where I think it is worth looking into. This happened with my old Mobo, and now my new one so I don't think it's hardware/sound driver related. It never happened to me in OFF.

It's one of those things that doesn't occur often enough to call it a serious issue, yet when it does happen, it can compromise a pilot's life if one reacts like they have a dead prop and it certainly kills the immersion.

Don't know if it helps the debate, but it never happened to me. I use up to date Realtek audio drivers.

It's pretty rare, I think. I've had it happen twice, and each time was following a loud rip from damage. And each time I thought my engine had been hit but then it seemed to be working just fine, only without sound.

Yes I had this happen once as well, some time ago followed by a loud ripping sound and then silence but my prop was still turning and I can't remember if it still was when I force landed out of fear I had no engine.

I don't think it's a driver issue. I'm using a SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium card.

The silent engine bug showed up last night for the first time. As six Albatrosses dived on our four Sopwiths, the wheels of an oncoming Albatros touched my Strutter's top wing but didn't damage it severely.

I thought my engine was out and headed home in a shallow glide from five miles into Hunland. At first all of my attention was on events unfolding over my shoulder. Finally, the attacker peeled off and headed home. Just as I was congratulating myself on a lucky escape and brilliant ability to conserve altitude with a dead engine, I noticed my airspeed was 125 and my revs were maxed. So I levelled off and headed home, amazed that at full speed I could still hear shells passing in the air, cows in fields, etc. Somehow I must have got a plane built under license by Rolls-Royce!
