I started this plane a while ago and still not finished it. But, time for some progress pictures I guess. smile
Photo 1 to 10 are pretty straight forward following the plans. 11 is mock up of progress and 12 and 13 I will explain.

12 and 13 I added the rubber band but you will notice I built a section behind the canopy. This section on the Guillows plans should be done using cellophane and white bond paper. I ignored this knowing best and all smile and use 1/16 balsa wood then cut out windows by tracing pattern they gave for cellophane onto the wood. I then used a clear plastic water bottle for the actual window.

Photo 14 and 15 gives you some idea how the wings are built. However, these wings was for another project I was thinking of building based on a clip wing variant of Spitfire. (I did take photo's of the wing build but I accidently deleted them)

Photo 16, decals for cockpit. Plans do not tell you how to do this either. couple pieces of 1/16 balsa, 2x flat pieces glue at 90 degree angle, then a small section added and curved. Making sure whole lot fits in canopy but, does not make contact with rubber. Glued in place, painted and clear coated before applying decal and clear coating again.

Wing coverings I do the whole lot in sections rather than one piece. It is easier to do this way but takes longer, Photo 18 shows mock up with elevator and Rudder already covered.

Photo 19, Only Wing, Rudder, Elevator and canopy join doped.

Photo 20,21 Wing fairings added one coat of dope applied and sanded. area's of interest marked.

Photo 22,23 everything together one or two minor things to look at before paint

Looks nice! I find these kits very relaxing to build. Lots of fun.

I took a little break from my Spitfire since I ran out of supplies and havent had time to get what I need to finish.

Pedant alert: Just so you know the box is wrong. The plane and markings are of a Mk5 which will be grey and green not brown and green.

It says a Mk1 which would be brown and green but would not then have the cannon which were only fitted to some Mk2 and to the Mk5.

If you leave it as it is with no cannon then you can finish it as an early mark but make sure the squadron markings and roundels etc are correct if you want authenticity. smile

Yes taking the box picture with a pinch of salt, I think camo' colours shifted in late 1941. I found this out when I was looking into underside colour for Hawker Hurricane.

Yep I do not intend to add the cannons to my model. It wouldn't make it a Mk.I and the fixing for them would be poor at this stage.

Roundels
Upper Wing Type B Lower Wing Type A Fuselage Type A1 Fin Type A I would assume for Spitfire 1940

Paints! thumbsup

I went ahead and got me some pre-mixed paints Vallejo Model Air 8 Colour set. I still plan on mixing my own, like I did with the hurricane. Hopefully, this time more accurately colour match the pre-mixed set. My other acrylics are a water based generic set, of average quality, so I will try using a dilute of dope rather than out and out water in the mixing process.

That would drive me bonkers trying to make all those pieces but what you have done is looking really nice.

Prop ebay, It is more suitable for RC flight rather than rubberband. I have not checked if this prop actually works with rubberband power my guess due to pitch nope smile I selected this prop over parkzone prop or a more accurate looking prop because they actually look like they are moving when stationary but that could just be me.

Sorry been a while still working on this model almost finished need to get me a can of clear coat and do decals.

But my paint mixing went well with a bit of trial and error. I been using a combination of paint 50/50 water dope mix and then airbrush cleaner for thinner. Looking at my Hurricane model and how a few months of sunlight have affected it. I have made my colours slightly darker. Brown seems to lighten more than green anyways. Will touch up my lines between underside and camo soon smile

Flew it once, and it ended up on the roof?

This is a classic.

I built that model 30 something years ago.

Building that model I realized that the spitfire wing looked like an archery longbow.

Your pictures brought me back in time on another continent.

Thank you

As a child my dad built a dozen or so of these, mostly WWI planes powered by thimble-drome motors. Back then we used doped on tissue paper and they hung in the ceiling of the garage till my late teens. By then they resembled the dehydrated lizard you find trapped between the window and the screen biggrin

I built one of these as a kid and it looked NOTHING like what you did.

It was so bad that it looked better after the firecrackers went off inside it.

smile

Yep, made one to. Being an impatient youngster wanting it to go together in a day.
The results were terrible. Did not have any fire crackers, but it made a good hanging
target for the bb guns. Shredded it in no time.

heheh, I used to do the same thing along with my brother.

Living in a high 2 story building we had put a wire from the roof down to the back of the garden and used to slide the aircraft down that, and watch it disappear in a cloud of white smoke...
Ahhh the fun we had as kids wink

I remember these Guillow's models being a quarter. Walk in to a hobby store and they're close to twenty dollars. OUCH! I feel real old about now. DOUBLE OUCH!!!

I think the Spitfire is the only model in their line up I never built. Had a lot of fun building these models and seeing your build filled me with memories of saw dust, tissue paper and dope. I won't even mention the smell of Ambrose glue. The best flying model was the Bird Dog. The balsa was very light and the wing loading made for a fun flier.

There was another company that made the same sized models but instead of pop-out pieces you had to cut all the parts out. I enjoyed that too, unless the balsa was poor quality and split along the grain too easily. I can't remember the name of the company but the added cutting made for an interesting approach to building.

Ahhhhhhh. Memories. Nice job.
