While going through the process of reinstalling sims on my new rig, I came across Bohemia Interactive’s Take On Helicopters series in my Steam library. EinsteinEP and I were generally impressed with the original TOH. My biggest two complaints remain the clunky user interface and the lack of good external camera controls. The storyline, game-like approach of TOH really appealed to me though, and it does strike the right balance between simulation and game. For my new install, I used Fred’s nice flight model tweak which definitely seems to make the helicopters fly a bit closer to what one would expect.

The Larkin Story

The premise of the story is that you and your brother are trying to help carry forward the dream of your dead father by salvaging his ailing helicopter company. We start out flying – me the rusty helicopter pilot and my brother trying to talk me into coming to work for him since the company is doing so poorly. During the intro, you get to try your hand at some level flight and turns before you get recalled back to the heliport.

The sim really is beautiful and my new rig handles it with no problem. I do have the viewing distance turned down just slightly to keep 30FPS or so.

Due to an emergency having to do with a freighter that has run aground, we are recalled back to the company heliport to drop me off and allow my brother (Joe) to assist with the rescue…

After dropping me off..Joe takes off but suffers a mechanical issue and plummets into the water. A few days later we learn that Joe is OK, but he is unable to fly, so we have to step up and help out the company. Things are a bit shaky though and Joe seems to know something about the company finances, but isn’t revealing a lot of information.

A few days later Joe introduces me to the team at our home heliport…

My first mission is to demo one of our helicopters to a potential buyer…

The mechanic comes along for the ride – always a promising sign..

Our heliport is quite nice…

As I give the demo ride, the buyer instructs us to head over to a luxury yacht they just acquired before sending me to the company compound…

At the landing zone a man is waiting to pick up his boss…

I actually can’t even recall the original story (it has been that long ago), but there might be some tie in between the guy buying the helicopter and the tanker/freighter incident that happened a few days prior. The man agrees to buy the helicopter, so we have to walk out of the compound to find a ride home.

To be continued….

* If anyone can tell me how to pause the game without the screen going blurry - I'll buy you a beer. Trying to grab screens without the ability to pause is a PITA..!

Very nice! Was always interested in this game, but I was never sure if it's really worth it. I mean, the graphics looks really good, I'm sure the flight models are, too, but is there a real playability to it? How big is the game area? Are the cockpit bush buttons? Is there any add-on, mods, additional missions and so on?

Well, it's definitely worth it when you often see it on sale for $5 or so.. It was even worth it back when it was retail. The graphics are good, but they aren't like Far Cry detail or anything..there are some blurries and vague city textures, but overall the feeling is quite good. There are add-ons and mods, and user created missions. You can even merge it with Arma 2 so that you can fly over the included content (can't remember the name of the terrains right now) that are featured in Arma 2. I don't know how that works with regards to flying missions in Arma 2. There was also the DLC content Take On Hinds that allows you to fly the Mi-24. Very cool.

All of that said, this is definitely "sim lite" and a good mix of game and flying. You can choose a one click start, or you can go through clickable items in the cockpit, but they aren't ultra hardcore, just a few more steps. It is more a game about the story and flying than systems and uber accuracy. I can't recall if there is a demo, but you might snoop around and see if there is one available.

I don't really know what the status of TOH is right now - the forums at Bohemia Interactive seem pretty slow, so I don't know what kind of further development is planned, if any. I'm hoping it gets some sort of integration into Arma 3 - and it would be really cool if they came out with more stories like the "Larkin" one. I'll be posting more mission reports from it... I'd like to actually fly the whole story and finish it.

On the status of ToH, in one sense it kind of died. The community faded out after the Hinds release, which is a real shame.

The future is bright however, as BI recently announced Arma 3 will be getting the ToH physics code imported later this year, along with "additional content." Server admins will have the ability to enable the more realistic heli physics on their servers, and I'm really really hoping SHQ goes this route.

In preparation, I recently re-installed ToH, so I'm up to speed when the A3 expansion lands this fall.

Flashback...

After completing the demo and delivery flight, I head back to the office to talk to brother Joe. This is when Joe vaguely alludes to some tough times he had in South Asia, which I assume alludes to Afghanistan or something in the neighborhood. We get to flashback to when Joe was flying there.

This mission is a straightforward recon flight to give the commanding officers the lay of the land..

We start out at our FARP where other helicopters are coming and going on their own missions...

Departing the FARP...

The terrain in the South Asia map is quite good. It is a shame they didn't build more TOH content around this theater of operations.. An Apache would have fit in here really nicely!

We are heading over the mountains to check out a patrol route that the officers want to see...

It looks like either Afghanistan, or Nevada...

The high mountains require a little forethought to make sure you have the power and speed to get over them...

I honestly couldn't remember what this mission was about in the past..so I was halfway expecting an RPG or SA-7 to come streaking up...

One of the officers. I just started watching the HBO series "Generation Kill"..so I keep wishing this guy would talk in the "Godfather" voice...

After the mountains the terrain gives way to farm fields near the airbase on the other side...

The officers ask to fly higher to get a better view so we step up a couple thousand feet until they are satisfied...

The mission is accomplished without incident and we are cleared to RTB...

So ends the first flasback mission...

Whale Watch!

Our next mission for Larkin Helicopters is set up by one of our employees. It seems there is an oceanographer that needs video work done for a film he is making. We are to fly out to Puget Sound and rendezvous with the oceanographer's boat and he will lead us to the filming location where we will take video of whales. Paul will be riding along with the video camera to take the footage. This is mostly a precision flying mission with requirements to be at a certain distance with a good view of the whales, but not so close as to spook them and ruin the chance to video them.

Soon we have the engine fired up in the "Little Bird" and we are on our way north toward Puget Sound...

Soon we spot the customer's boat...

Paul will be recording - whatever he records will also show up as a small inset on the screen so that I can maintain the proper orientation of the helo to the target...

First we follow the boat to the first filming location..

Once there, we have to hover close - but not too close!

After the first video shoot we are instructed to fly to two other areas to search for whale pods to film...

While searching the western area we come across the wreck that features heavily in the storyline. Vrana Corporation owns the freighter and it is apparently leaking toxic chemicals into the sound...

The search takes quite awhile and I find my shoulders starting to ache from the constant attention required to the controls. Yep - it's a helicopter simulator!

Soon we find and record both pods and we are given a mission success and ordered back to the heliport...

On the way back - I just happen to spot a smudge of smoke off to the side of our flight path. I actually don't think I saw this when I first played through the campaign/story years ago. As we get closer we get a side mission to hover near the smoking boat to allow Paul to direct the Coast Guard to render assistance...

Then it is a short flight back to our heliport; always a tense moment landing on the small pad after investing so much time in the mission.

The mission is a success and we chalk up another rung in the ladder of trying to pull Larkin Aviation out of the gutter...

Interesting read. Never really tired the campaign, but may have to give it another go.

Now that I went back to a NVida card, I'll have to give this another go. No of the ARMA (or stuff based on the engine) would run with my Radeon card for whatever reason.

Also for whoever asked, yes there is a demo. Basically couple of intro flights in a few different helo's. My old card would crash out in the first 10 minutes with a bunch of graphical issues, hopefully the new one wont.

The dialogue in this game is some of the worst I've heard in any game.

I also felt that the missions were tedious and not enjoyable.

I enjoy your AAR more than the actual game

I just imagine it is one of our kinda quirky FOs that is talking. It isn't that far off.. thumbsup

Yeah - it certainly isn't a run and gun sim or anything. It is definitely more about the flying and the scenery rather than the action. The shame of it is, the hooks are all there for some really creative mission designs (particularly when you start looking at Arma 2 content..but the lack of follow through by Bohemia has sort of left this title out there wanting for content..

There are some folks who have made random/dynamic aircraft missions for ArmA 3 that I find to be much more enjoyable than the ones from ToH.

Missions range from civilian medical evacuation, civilian search and rescue, military search and rescue, military ground forces insertion, military ground forces extraction (hot/cold LZs)

Thanks for those (I own ArmA3).. I had heard a rumor that TOH flight models might make it into Arma3 at some point..any news on that?

I find the flight model in ArmA 3 to be about the same, if not better than ToH.

Controls in ArmA 3 aren't as jerky as ToH. I find it easier to land in tighter spots, come to a hover, and the overall control of the aircraft seems to be better.

Better physics model from A3, maybe?

Flashback - Escort

After the whale video mission, we head back to the hangar where Joe wants to talk a bit more about his experiences in South Asia. We warp back in time to fly as Joe in what I assume is Afghanistan. Our mission is to escort a heavy lift helicopter that is planning an insertion and attack. We will rendezvous with the CH-53 AW-103 a few kilometers from the base and from there is becomes an exercise in formation flying and station keeping. It is a tense bit of flying since a timer comes up if you drift too far away and you must regain your position without the timer expiring or you will have to refly the mission...

We reach the rendezvous point and join up on the CH-53 AW-103 - our task is to remain with 150 meters at all times - actually quite the challenge..

As we get a few minutes in the escort all my attention is focused on keeping the helicopter in sight and in range per the mission requirements. Suddenly the CH-53 AW-103 starts belching black smoke and declares an emergency. I orbit while the CH-53 AW-103 drops down to perform an emergency landing...

Now the escort mission is scrapped and my new tasking is to provide close air support for the downed helo...

Sure enough, after a few minutes some tracers whiz by my cockpit. This mission took me several tries to accomplish because the enemy fire can kill you or disable your helicopter very quickly. I finally managed to get some good rocket passes on the enemy and destroyed two of the oncoming vehicles. Your door gunners will also engage using the mini-guns if they have line-of-sight to the target...

After a few more minutes, we are given the order to RTB. My door gunner was still plinking at stuff as we took the route home - so I don't know what else there was out there (I'm not using targeting labels)...

The ride home takes a few minutes. The terrain for the South Asia maps is really good - very atmospheric. Our base is in the hazy valley ahead while the terrain jacks up all around it...

The flashback mission is a success and now we'll be able to proceed with Larkin Helicopter missions...

* I'll reiterate that taking screens for this sim is the most challenging I've ever tried. The view system is pretty tough to work with, and the inability to pause means all of the screens are taken "on the fly" while flying the mission. I'd love to get some better screens, but this is the best I can do during the frantic moments..

I'm loving this AAR so far, but I'd like to point out that the larger helicopter is an AugustaWestland AW-101, not a CH-53

Golf Course Tour

The guy that purchased our other helicopter, William Haydon, has contacted us for another contract. This time, he wants us to pick him up at his estate and fly him on a tour of Seattle area golf courses.

Once again we are in the "Little Bird" for the contract. I need to explore the Hangar options screen and see what kind of repaint I can do for my helo...

On the way to Haydon's estate we take in the nice Seattle skyline...

All the gauges in the green...

Haydon's estate sits on a point of land complete with its own helicopter landing area. I guess I should have taken the noise abatement route and approached from over the water...

After overflying the compound I reverse course to approach the landing area from the water...

One of the nice challenges to TOH is that the trees are collidable (take note DCS!) so it is always fun getting into a tight LZ...

Haydon always looks ready to assassinate me...

He springs a surprise on me - he wants to take his own helicopter. He and his assistant climb in the back and I strap in to the pilot's seat...

Hey..uh..I can see up your skirt..

I hope this isn't going to be some Eyes Wide Shut party or something...creepy...

Off we go in the Bell (412?)..

I'm guessing Haydon's neighbors really enjoy all the helicopter traffic...

So our tour of the golf courses commences. Throughout the flight between the five courses Haydon makes small talk and indicates that he has an interest in acquiring Larkin Aviation. There is definitely an undercurrent of sinister intentions, but he talks about wanting to grow the company...

Some people see a port - me? I see targets...

Between golf courses we get a close up view of the Seattle waterfront...

Finally we've made the rounds to all of the golf courses and we are cleared back to Haydon's compound...

Haydon indicates that he is interested in buying Larkin Aviation and says he will be sending over some paperwork with the details of the deal...

Apparently Haydon's company is also related to the Vrana Industries company that had the cargo ship disaster that started off the story. There is some tie in yet to be revealed obviously...

Flashback - Leaflet Drop

For this third "flashback" mission, we once again assume the role of Joe Larkin in Afghanistan. The mission for today is a psy-ops leaflet drop over some locations in the valley.

At the FOB we get our helo ready to go. One note that may sound kind of funny - but TOH has the most outstanding dynamic windsock motion that I've ever seen in a sim. I mean..the thing moves realistically..

Off we go...

We take up a course for the first village about 10 km away...

Once in the vicinity of the village, we come into a hover and the leaflets are dropped...

Sure does look like a great place for an ambush...

We head for the second village where the process is repeated...

While enroute to the third village - the stuff hits the fan. Orange and green tracers crisscross the sky and I hear the metallic clink of rounds hitting the fuselage...

Our helo is hit several times and the airframe starts to vibrate horribly - time to set her down!

Rotor RPM is dropping so we push over, bottom the collective, and save up some energy for the flare. In truth - this part of the mission took me a half a dozen tries before I got a successful landing out of it. We come to rest against a tree where the rotor blades shear off...

My crew chief is killed by either the enemy fire or the impact...

The radio bursts to life and the local base radios that help will be on the way and to evade the enemy if possible. In a scene reminiscent of Lone Survivor, enemy troops appear on the ridgeline above. A quick choice of flight or flight, running wins and I book it the other direction...

After running for a few minutes the radio crackles with order to proceed to a pick up location. The controller also tells me military assets are not available and that a contractor helicopter is being tasked to pick me up. That actually seems pretty realistic since the melding of corporate and military is nearly complete in the United States. Eisenhower was a smart man.

The enemy is close on my heels as I switch directions to make my way toward the extraction point...

I give a small cheer when I see a military "Little Bird" make a rocket pass on some troops that are pursuing me. The joy is short lived when the helo is shot down a minute later...

I take to the ridges and see the enemy is all around..this is getting dicey!

About 800 meters from the pickup site I spot the extraction helo on the approach...

A lone enemy soldier is hot on my heels though, so I turn around, drop to the prone position and fire off some rounds at him, scoring a kill..

I make the last mad dash to the waiting helo...

The contractors aren't too pleased with the situation and we head out - despite my pleas to go back and check on my crew chief...

This mission represents what I think is the best facet of TOH - the mixture of Arma 2 capabilities with helicopter operations with a good storyline. The challenge of successfully landing the damaged helo and then evading the enemy is pretty intense. Nice job all around for the mission designers on this one...

The New Boss

Prior to our next mission, I decide to explore the hangar a bit to see what I'm missing out on in there. I know there is an option to upgrade things on the helicopter, and I can see I have money in an account to spend, so I poke my nose in hangar to check things out.

The first thing I purchase is a new paint job for the Little Bird. The hornet paintjob looks awesome!

I also see options for upgrading things like adding a camera, FLIR, mirror, interior LCD display, interior rear seats, etc.. I make some upgrades and wonder how this will affect future mission selection.

Back in the hangar, I see a maintenance module that shows I have some maintenance to do. You are supposed to do a walk-around inspection of the helicopter prior to every flight to identify and fix maintenance problems (oops - I haven't been doing that!). The benefit of doing the walk-around is that you identify things that need repair and it lowers the cost to have them fixed. I fumble my way around the aircraft. There are specific points to look at that will bring up a green "eye" that shows you have looked at that item. I realize I don't really know where all of those check-points are on the helicopter (you have to look in very specific locations).

So, slightly embarrassed at my inability to correctly pre-flight the helo, I pull up the training selection (you can do this at anytime within your career) to get a refresher on the preflight from an instructor...

This is another area where TOH did a great job implementing a feature. The training modules are well done, interactive, and do teach you a lot. After a few minutes with the instructor pointing out the proper places to look for pre-flight items, I'm set to finish the pre-flight on my own helo. I hit all the items, perform some light maintenance at a small cost, and I'm ready for the next mission. Thanks instructor dude!

So our next mission is to fly to Vrana Headquarters downtown and pick up Haydon and transport him to the private airbase his company operates. It seems like we have some official contract now with Vrana so we are now beholden to them. My brother, Joe, is acting really weird about the whole thing and he seems to be hiding information from me. I'm starting to wonder if he has a gambling problem or if he might be addicted to pain killers from his accident.

I'm usually not a fan of timed missions in sims/games, but in this case, the timer is both appropriate and adequate for the mission at hand. It is a nice little pressure addition that is fairly realistic in terms of real world flying. We have about five minutes or so to get cranked up, fly across the bay, and land at the Vrana HQ...

On the way, my brother belatedly informs me of a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) over the sound due to a port call by some Navy ships. You can either fly over the TFR, or around it. On the way to the pickup, I elect to fly over it, but get admonished once for flying a bit too low...

As the timer winds down, the pressure mounts for the landing on the rooftop helipad. Maybe I'll blow Hadon off the roof...

Haydon climbs in and is a little sharp with me over the time requirement. I guess once the contracts were signed he gave up some of the pretense of liking me...

I push the nose over and pull in max power to accelerate toward redline. We have about six minutes to get to the private airfield...

On the way Haydon discusses some things with me. I learn that a division of Vrana Corporation is a company called Ion, and I get the sense it is some sort of para-military contractor of some sort. Interesting in that my brother Joe was rescued in Afghanistan by a contractor heli-outfit, so I'm wondering if there is an eventual tie-in there (I've never flown the whole TOH campaign, so at this point I'm pretty much absorbing the story as you are..)..

I set us down at the airfield heliport that is marked out on the grass. Haydon informs me that I'll be taking one of his business associates back to the Larkin Heliport with me - an unanticipated development that wasn't briefed...

The woman chats a bit on the way to our heliport and I'm stunned to learn that she apparently now exercises some oversight at Larkin Aviation. She is sort of my boss now! Oh brother Joe..what are you up to?

I elect to take the route around the TFR on the way back...

Oops, my new boss catches me trying to sneak a peek down her blouse... Awkward!

Arriving at the heliport I'm instructed that Vrana Industries has seen fit to make some changes and upgrades already. I'm told to circle above and wait for a heavy lift helicopter that is dropping some stuff off at the helipad. Interesting developments..!

Once the heavy helo has departed, we are cleared to make our approach to the pad. All of the (surprise) mission goals are accomplished and our new "boss" is now at Larkin Aviation. We'll see how things shake out from here...
