Just a heads up for those who may have missed it, T4ckl3b3rry has been working his magic and has released a Win 7/8 64-bit compatibility patch for Jane's Israeli Air Force.

I have been having a blast reliving that old sim on my Win 7 64-bit rig.

Check out this thread at GKAB for details:-

Thanks T4ckl3b3rry thumbsup

(and should probably be left as such but heck, let's try this)

thanks both tackleberry and you baltika.

Thanks for the heads up baltika, I would have missed it for sure.

There is also new version of the patch for Janse's USAF found here:

Hi theOden,

On your first point, I know what you mean, sometimes it's best to leave the past in the past. . .

But, I have to say, whenever I revisit these great old Jane's sims, I am continually reminded that what they maybe lack in modern graphics, they more than make up for in terms of content, immersion, playability, and downright fun - oh, hell yeah! Something which, as has been observed on these boards many times before, is perhaps somewhat lacking in more modern offerings.

All I have to say about that is, well, I have DCS and FC3 on my steam account, and I fly them a lot, but sometimes you gotta go oldskool, and thanks to Tackleberry, there is another great old title to add to the flyable list band

As to your second point - I greatly appreciate the sentiment, and hope for the best - but sometimes pain is just pain sigh

As a schoolboy, I remember Scotland taking the Grand Slam with style, and in my more mature years I remember screaming them on to Calcutta Cup victories over the Auld Enemy at Murrayfield as both a consolation prize (the Calcutta Cup being the only prize worth winning ;-) ) and avoidance of the wooden spoon. All of which, brought great pleasure in its own way.

Nowadays, my most recent memory is the typical let's-snatch-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory game against France in our last 6 nations encounter - which was hailed at the time as a vast improvement over the previous match.

Well, as a thrawn Scotsman, I'll not be holding my breath.

But, we live in hope.

Here's hoping tackleberry tackles Jane's F-15 next biggrin

I've got Jane's F-15 up and running on Win 7 64-bit.

Here are the steps:

1. Install the game.

2. Install the v1.17F Patch

3. Download the Aqrit's ddwrapper from here, extract the ddwrapper.zip and put the ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg files in the game's root directory and edit the aqrit.cfg file: set 'ForceDirectDrawEmulation=1' this will fix the GUI problem with the menus

4. Remove all files from Movies Folder (or back them up if you want, just make sure the folder is empty) when using Aqrit's ddwrapper I have a crash whenever movies are played (intro for example), without the ddwrapper movies work but the menu doesn't

5. Edit the shortcut created by the installer - the field labelled "Start in" is empty - it should contain the game's path (i.e. "C:\Janes\F-15"), if you don't want to do that delete the original shortcut and use the executable directly, or make new shortcut - it will have the field correctly filled out. it seems that when you have the "start in" field empty all the extra dll's in the game directory are not being utilized and you need ddwrapper to work for usable GUI in game - not 100% sure, only my observation

6. Download and install glide wrapper of your choosing - I use nGlide found here.

7. Run the game - make sure you have set 3dfx as the renderer in the options menu. I had it selected by default

8. Have fun!

More info in this thread. Most credits goes to Andromedius.

Edit: also if you have unexpected CTD's after 20-30 min into a mission check out this thread:

X-ray's hex-edited executable helped me to fix the crashes that I had both under XP and Win7

Damson: You are a genius....I've tried everything and never got past the menu issues. So far so good.
clapping clapping

I tried using nglide and worked without any issues. Trying to get dgvoodoo but doesn't seems to like it in the F-15 root folder (doesn't recognizance it, only gives the "Software" option)....

I had the same issue on my XP machine - it only worked if I put the glide2x.dll file into windows/system32 folder, from the game's root directory it was a nogo, but I wonder if fixing the shortcut would help (step 5 in the list above).

Well, so if you want to use dgvoodoo and have Win7 64-bit you will have to put glide2x.dll file into your \Windows\SysWOW64 folder. Make sure to uninstall nglide if you have it installed.

Or just use nglide instead. I have no issues with it and it's super easy to configure.

Hi Baltika,

Looks like I'm late to the party re the IAF patch link.

This now no longer appears to lead to the patch.

Would love to get my copy running on my Win 7 machine.

Any suggestions where I could find it?

Thanks

@Andy63,

There you go, patch coming right up from my dropbox : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14017931/JITP.7z
Just decompress the archive and copy the files in your IAF folder and you're done.
Obviously, 'IAFCONFIG.exe' will allow you to select your valid 3D card.
You can also use 'IAFJets One Core.bat' if you get some performance issues.

Hope that helps.

Take care,

Andromedius.

Hi Andromedius,

Thanks for posting the link.

I have now installed IAF and used the patch and I'm flying in Windows 7.

Mostly.

Just wondering whether you had any of the issues below, whether its worth a re-install or whether its just the way it is and it ain't going to get any better.

1. No front end video for either Janes games or IAF. I get a message reading 'Video not available. Cannot find VIDS.IV50 decompresser'.
2. In 'Preferences' menu no sliders for increasing graphics, sound, devices, gameplay but the keyboard option gives the keyboard assign and joystick assign table.
3. No scroll bars on the briefing text.

I'm running the program on a Windows 7 laptop with no compatibility and when flying all looks OK although the landscape's a little blocky, but, I have no idea what the graphics setting is. The runway and buildings all look as smooth as the install on my creaky Windows 98 machine which I've kept just to play the older games – mainly from the Janes series.

There appears to be no difference whether I use hardware or software options.

Thanks

Andy63

Hi, Andy,

I didn't experience the issues you mentioned. Though I haven't flown IAF for a while, the sliders in the options menus were active - same for the scroll bars on the briefing text.

Did you patch the game in 1.1 ? If not, here's the link for the patch : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14017931/Israeli%20Air%20Force%201.1%20patch.exe

I think a quick reinstall of the sim and the official patch could prove efficient; then, applying Tackleberry's patch should do the trick. Still, if you run into the same issues than before, just let me now and I'll do a quick check on my system (I'm running Win 8.1 but I can dual boot with Seven).

And, yes, on another topic, terrain rendering isn't IAF's strong suit; there are a lot of shimmering textures due to the chosen 3D engine.
If you're curious about it, here's a pretty old and interesting webpage tackling the issue : http://daab1.tripod.com/iaf/shimmer.html

Fly safe,

Andromedius.
