. Well, it's been nearly three months since I started work on this project but it is at long last ready for you folks to give it a go, (it would have gone quicker but RL kept getting in the way). I will be packaging it up and sending it to Pol for posting in the download section on the WOFF website but before I do that I'd like you navigators to have a crack at it first. Keep in mind that while the CFS3 landscape is quite accurate in terms of roads, railways, and coastlines, it is hit-and-miss when it comes to location of cities and towns. Some are correct but many are off by a few kilometers. Rivers and forests are even worse. This map is going to show all such errors as it was built from an in-sim photo recce of the entire area. So please, don't point out that Armentières is 5km too far to the north or that Tournai is 7km too far to the east. It is what it is and the devs have noted numerous times that trying to correct these placement errors is a gargantuan task and not one they wish to take on any time soon, (if ever). It is because of these very errors that I launched into this mapping project in the first place so that we might have charts accurate to the WOFF WWI landscape, warts and all. I should also mention that I have denoted historical landmarks and points of interest on the map that are not actually in the sim differently from those that are so as to avoid confusion. If there are other such historical landmarks not currently on the map that you would like to see added let me know what they might be and I will look into including them before sending this along to Pol. Alrighty then, here it is. You can right-click on the image and open it up full size in a new window if your browser is being difficult. Happy Navigating! Lou (NOTE: Image updated 5/17/2014) .

Thank you Gents, glad you like it. Bletchley asked over in the Combat Ace forum about providing a printable version in the download I send to Pol and I can certainly do that. Keep in mind though that the map I've posted here is about 53" x 48", (and that is reduced to 60% of my original working map). For ease of dividing it up evenly into printable sheets, and to maintain image crispness, a 60" x 55" size would work nicely. Figuring 8.5" x 11" paper and allowing a minimum of 1/2" for the usual border most printers have to leave around the edges you end up at 6 sheets across and 8 sheets top-to-bottom for a total of 48 sheets. After trimming and assembly it would make a lovely and highly functional wallpaper.

You are quite welcome, kaa. BTW, I've just sent the zip file to Pol so that he can add it to the download section at the WOFF website. The zip contains the full map along with a printable version. I've also made a couple of minor tweaks to the map this morning and just updated the image in the first post of this thread so you'll want to grab that new one. Happy Navigating! Lou .

cptroyce, that is a good way to do it and you have that option by using the map I've posted here, (which is the same map that will be in the download). In addition to this map I've also included 48 smaller map sections that can each be printed out on 8.5" x 11" paper for the AO you are working in. I've also included a numbered key map to show the location of each of these 48 sections to make it easy peasy for you.

. cptroyce and JJJ65, you are both quite welcome. And I see that Pol has the zip file loaded and available in the download section of the WOFF website, parked right next to my Verdun map. Thank you Pol. .

Thanks a lot RAF_Louvert, you did an amazing job there. If only we could have something half as good for inflight, ingame navigation... I wonder why the inflight maps always appear pixelated. Is there a way to take a map such as this and have it appear inflight, and with crisp wording/features?

Is there a way to take a map such as this and have it appear inflight, and with crisp wording/features? Inflight map is a HUGE single texture. When zoomed in even the smallest font will look pixelated. As long as the inflight map in WOFF uses the CFS3 stock texture, there isn´t a way to make a better map. There would have to be a programming change for that, something I don´t think it´s possible.

Quick question... That's not all the aerodromes mapped on it, just from the certain time period you were flying in, right? I think I see a few missing. As written on the map, it shows situation on Feb 1, 1916

camel, Kaische, Beanie, chrispdm1, thanks for the accolades. Hope the map serves you well in your WOFF flights.
And, as pointed out by corsaire31, the mapping date is 1 February 1916 so there will be numerous aerodromes not shown. You will simply have to add those in as you fly your missions just as our RL counterparts had to do a century ago.
Happy Navigating!
Lou

I think the maps are great and can now view them on my RH screen using Irfanview and WOFF on the left screen. The only problem I have is trying to figure out the relationship of the maps. I am flying a 4 Sqn BE2c from Bailleul Town which is map 21 and get a bit confused as to which maps go NSEW from there. I think no 28 is South but am often not sure. Would it be possible to have sort of index map of flanders that shows the position of each individual map? Oh dammit, I retract all that because I hadn't noticed the the grid key map at the bottom of the page. So ignore this post altogether

Olham, you are more than welcome. Hope the map will serve you well.
chrispdm1, I am missing things all the time.
Jim, glad to learn you are making use of the map as well, and as I've already said, I'm missing things all the time too.
Now then, where did I set my coffee cup?

Coffee - yeah - I don't forget where I put it; I forget drinking it before it's cold. Arghh - cold again.... Just did some flying with Kasta 8 from Brullin-Higny north of Verdun, and although the Roland C.II doesn't offer the best downward vision, I found it easy to navigate after your Verdun map. Following the road to Spincourt and the lake Etang d'Amel, and further down to the junction at Etain, then west towards the river Meuse, following the river until the 45° bend, and from there heading northeast to the Etang de Haut-Fourneau, and then back to my field was easy! At least until those Nupes appeared! I would like to recommend it to everyone: don't panik; try it out inland, away from the front - it is easy as a child can bake a cake of sand! Thanks again for that huge, detailed work, Lou!

Mr.Dirt, the real navigation must not even be learnt. They usually flew by sight. They explored the area around their airfield and noted the well recognisable landmarks in their maps. Sometimes they didn't know after a fight, wether they were east or west of the line, and had to find a landmakr, and use the compass to get back. In WOFF, the lakes, but also the railroads are good to use. Also the cities and towns. They are about 5-8 miles off their true positions in the terrain (which was a CFS3 mistake), but RAF_Louvert has put them in his maps, where he found them in WOFF - so you can use them also for naviagation. You see, it's more a "flying after what you see; errors incl." but true navigation.
