Well, the life of Hans Gluber has come to an end, which is probably just as well with midterms coming up next week. Couldn't find the time to make exciting AARs, but have enjoyed what people have posted.

Was going well. Starting 4th mission with 3 kills, flying along, when all of a sudden my flight takes a sharp turn and a wingman turned right into me with little warning. The last thing I saw as I looked back while diving to my death was him flying merrily along. I hope his gear gives out when he tries to land.

Good luck all!

Ouch! That's pretty brutal, but I can't say it hasn't happened to me before... if you get a chance, at least throw up some screens of your pilot's dossier so we can see the good he did for the cause!

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 10, 1917 ( Mission 7 )

Another of these missions ! We've been thrown out of our beds at 6:00 this morning, barely had time to have a warm coffee while the ground crews were preparing the planes. We were urgently sent to intercept a Brit raid at FF5156 near Saint Julien where we have two airfields close to each other and close to the frontline.
We flew there, patrolled for 20 minutes, and the only planes we saw were four Albatros from Jasta 11 flying a little higher. Everyone landed safe back at Aertrycke.

* Off for the week end, next flight report on Monday.

that sounds very much like my Horst Spieler's 13th mission. He was with kette zwei which elected to land at one Ineghem aerodrome instead of returning home so Horst broke away and joined kette eins for the duration of the mission. No enemies encountered. If you have a vid I would love to watch it.

Sorry to have taken this OT, so I'll keep it brief.

Very nice photo compilation Corsaire! Great compositions! Most of them are of winged creatures so I guess it stands to reason that you like flight simming!

Have a great day!

Glubber, sorry to learn of the loss of your pilot. A toast to the dead already, hooray for the next man to die!

Here are the reports from Karl Heusinger's two latest missions:

Flugmaat Karl Heusinger returned to Aertrycke around lunchtime on 15 June and had no sooner settled into his bunk for a short nap when he was told he’d be flying the afternoon patrol. It turned out to be a very quiet sortie with Schwarm Zwei keeping watch over a flight of B/R buses doing a recce of enemy positions down near Ypres. Karl saw nothing more than a few black puffs of AA as they were passing Roulers, apart from that it was so much sightseeing. Once back at camp he managed to sneak in his nap before going to evening mess where he was asked all sorts of questions about his stay in Brugge.
“How was the food?” “Were the beds comfortable?” “How many of our other brave fellows were there recovering with you?” “Were the nurses pretty?”
The last question was asked several times and Karl smilingly offered up the same answer on each occasion, “Perhaps you’ll have to get wounded and find out for yourself.” After several rounds of drinks and a few sing songs Karl excused himself and turned in for the night. He was still feeling a bit washed out from the week’s recovery and wanted to be fresh for the dawn mission, to which he’d been assigned.

16 June 1917, 7:00am. Schwarm Zwei of MFJ 1 were on the field preparing to lift into the early morning sky. They’d been charged with looking after an observation balloon south of Diksmuide as there were indications enemy planes were going to have a go at knocking it down. Karl revved the engine slightly and listened to its solid, steady drone. His mount was in tiptop shape and he was anxious to run it through its paces, perhaps even get into a mix-up with an enemy scout. A short time later he and his flight were alting up into yet another beautiful blue day, on to do their best for the Vaterland. The five Albs reached their assigned area and loitered about over the balloon for about 10 minutes when the fun began in earnest. Four Sopwith scouts were seen zipping in from the west about 300 meters above the balloon and were clearly making a beeline for it. They were Camels, a type Karl had been warned about as they could outturn anything in the sky. The young flieger could feel the excitement rising in him as he and his flight dove down to meet the attackers. One of the Camels suddenly broke away from the pack and began turning towards the north. Karl turned to meet him.

He soon realized he would have his hands full just trying to stay out of the sights of this fellow let alone trying to get a shot on him. Every time he attempted to slip down onto the Camel its pilot would manage to turn inside of him and gain altitude, leaving Karl nothing to do but zoom back up and out of the fight as quickly as possible.

Round and round, up and down the pair danced with neither gaining an advantage over the other. The fight kept getting lower and lower as the pair continued giving up bits of altitude, each trying to get on the other’s six. Karl thought it might end in a draw with both going home empty-handed. Suddenly, the Camel jinxed and made an odd diving turn that allowed Karl the split second he needed to line up a shot, and he took it.

The next instant the Camel had buried itself nose first into the mud of No Man’s Land leaving nothing but a smoldering crater.

For a moment the young Heusinger wasn’t sure what had happened that caused his opponent to make such a mistake, then he saw the wave from the friendly gunners in a nearby machine gun nest. They must have gotten a shot of their own on Karl’s dance partner and took advantage of it. He waved back and noted his position, wanting to be sure to mention it precisely so that these fellows could share credit should he be awarded the victory. As he alted back up he saw that the rest of Schwarm Zwei had managed to either destroy or drive off the remaining attackers and kept the balloon safe. The last half of the mission was quiet yet Karl felt as if his entire body was electric. The feeling continued even after he’d landed. It had been sheer, heart pounding excitement.

Trying to catch up after a busy schedule the first part of the week.

June 11, 1917:
I report back from the hospital in time for the afternoon flight. We are assigned to escort a flight of four D.F.W. two-seaters on a reconnaissance mission over the lines. We arrive at the rendezvous point without incident but the two-seaters are nowhere to be found. Our leader turns for home and soon we are all back safe and sound.

June 12, 1917:
Enemy aircraft have been reported over one of our aerodromes and schwarm zwei scrambles to intercept. We climb and arrive over the aerodrome only to find the action is long since over. We return to Aertrycke disappointed, but at least we're all still alive and well.

June 13, 1917:
Eager to see action again, we finally get what we feel sure will be a break from the uneventful missions we have been flying. We are assigned to patrol above our lines near Ypres and our leader has opted to route one leg of our flight across a salient in the lines, passing over enemy territory. We put up six kites and climb towards the front. As we approach the lines I spot two aircraft flying along the lines. They look like they could be British two-seaters, and eager to avenge my brother and my own wounds as well, I break formation to investigate closer. I approach from behind, seemingly unnoticed by the Englishmen until I can identify them. They aren't two-seaters, they're S.E.5s! Knowing that to these fighters are currently flown by only the best units in the RFC, and not wanting to initiate combat with the likes of Rhys-Davids or McCudden outnumber two-to-one, I perform an about face and speed back towards the safety of my flight, leaving them none the wiser. We encounter no other aircraft and return safely home to Aertrycke.

June 14, 1917:
This time we will surely see action - we are assigned a balloon busting mission near Diksmulde. Five aircraft take off and we proceed to the front at low level. As we cross the lines I spot a flight of six Sopwith Pups above us. We pass below and behind them and fortunately avoid detection. On to the balloon! We arrive about 1,000ft above the balloon and I dive to attack it. I fire a long burst into the sausage and up it goes in flames.

Knowing there to be another balloon not far to the south and with no other aircraft in sight, I opt to break off and see if I can bag another balloon while my flight remains in the area climbing and reforming. I locate and attack the second balloon. My first pass is unsuccessful, and I put up into an Immelman turn and make a second pass. I am met with a hail of bullets from the ground but somehow pass through unscathed to send the balloon crashing down around their ears. I climb and turn back to the north where I can see my flight still circling.

But we are no longer alone. A flight of five Nieuports is making its way back from the front and turns towards my comrades. They are well above my flight and positioned between them and the front - no escape, there will be a fight. Battle is joined before I arrive and as I approach I am now above the action and able to select a target and engage at my convenience.

I select a Nieuport that is currently above the rest and dive for him. He turns toward me and we begin circling. My Albatross has plenty of speed and I have no trouble keeping in a safe position. Eventually he gets above me and enters a steep climbing turn to escape. I am able to cut inside his turn and holding my kite just above a stall put a long burst into him from about 50 meters and 30 degrees of deflection. The pilot slumps over and the Nieuport dives vertically into the ground.

The fight seems to be breaking up and I spot a lone Albatross with engine trouble making for the front at very low level with a Nieuport rapidly overtaking him. I circle behind and dive upon the Englishman without being detected. I am about to fire when a Pup hurtles past not five meters off my right wing. I had no idea there were Pups in the area and quickly checked to make sure there weren't others stacked up behind this one. All clear. With both the Pup and the Nieuport in front of me I think I have time to dispatch the Nieuport before I have to deal with the Pup. I fire and hit him, he breaks left and after 90 degrees of turn breaks right. My bullets catch him as he turns, his right wing drops and he spirals the short distance to the ground. Now, where's that Pup? Behind me of course! I turn left but too late, his bullets begin chewing up my tail and left wing. My Albatross begins to wallow in the turn, but I am soon out of the line of fire. Another half turn and I realize I am in a losing fight. I am low, slow, and uncoordinated; a more perfect recipe for killing an aviator has yet to be concocted, not even the twin spandaus of von Richthofen are more efficient. I have two options: continue my turn as it is and await the inevitable spin into the field below, or relax my turn and face my doom at the hands of the Englishman. Neither option appeals to me so I chose option number three and push the nose over, reverse my turn (I take a few more hits) and make for the front pushing the throttle lever forward so hard I bent it.

I fly below the treetops and gradually pull away from the Pup. Below, I pass the Albatross I had come to rescue, having made a safe landing behind enemy lines. I form up with Bertram Heinrich over the front and we land together at a nearby airfield. We had been airborne only 21 minutes. Upon return to Aertrycke everyone is back except Oberflugmeister Sachsenberg. Just before dinner a truck pulls up and out jumps Sachsenberg, covered in mud and oil with a wild story of his own to tell. It is a good day for MFJ I - two balloons and four Nieuports destroyed for the loss of one Albatross and no pilots. The next morning I am informed that all four of my claims have been confirmed and I am to be awarded the Eisernes Kreuz 2 Klasse. I was also informed that my victims were two British aces: the first was Tom Falcon Hazell and the second Philip F. Fullard.

Dearest Papa
It has been a busy week for us, flying several patrols and defending our observation balloons. The past two days have been very active engaging the enemy both days. The days prior to 6 June were busy flying but no encounters with enemy machines. This was, in many ways a good for us as it has allowed the newer replacement flyers a chance to fit in.

I have enclosed the letter from Kommand as they have seen fit to award me an Iron Cross 2nd Class for shooting down three enemy now. I dedicated this to cousin Georg. I got a Sopwith Pup on the sixth. Luitjens and I had been seperated from the rest of the patrol and pounced on a lone enemy over our lines. We chased him across (reprimanded by the Kommandant) into British territory and brought him down near Bailleul.

My third enemy was a Nieuport type, from RFC 60, which we caught as part of an escort of observation types yesterday. I only hit him enough to force him to land north of Lille, but he burst into flame as he landed. The sausage we were protecting was quite appreciative as their winch motor had failed and they were getting ready to jump as the enemy were readying an attack. Our schwarm arrived in the nick of time to drive the enemy machines off.

Luitjens got his third as well, so we will celebrate this evening. I’m hoping the mustache wax arrives soon. All my love, Karl.

Man, SPAD #2 that was climbing away from you, you must have killed the pilot with that first burst, because he dropped like a rock after that! Well played!

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

Thanks rick, but I suspect it was something like "some people have great moments thrust upon them in spite of their skills"

I am too busy (did I say busy? I meant lazy) to post nice AAR reports as some of you are doing, but can report that August Hoelzer is alive and well after six days.

I am finding the experience very realistic so far, with lots of drudge flying interspersed with brief confusing clashes. Having fun!!
