Davis Monthan, the local Air Force Base here in Tucson, is hosting an Open House (aka Air Show) this upcoming weekend (4/12-4/13) and I'll be all over that. DM has one of the largest A-10 fleets in the world (is it *the* largest? not sure) but I'm hoping I'll be able to score an interview (or two (or three)) with some real Hawg pilots again.

I'll definitely be asking about their opinions and/or insight into the plans to replace the A-10 with F-16s and F-35s.

I also want to ask some technical procedural questions, like how the external lights are typically configured during start, taxi, takeoff, flight, etc.

What sort of questions would you ask a real Hawg driver, sim-related or no?

Ok, I'll start with a softball:
What is that black lens on the front of the starboard mainmount?

Home - got a pic or drawing? I'm not sure which component you're talking about.

Are you talking about the AN/AAS-35 Pave Penny?

Or, the black painting on the starboard main wheel fairing?

I know the answer to this one. Is it just a warm up question?

Here's a trolltastic question. Does pressing the trim switch disconnect the LAA?

HomeFries, the black cover is for an antenna on that "mainmount". I believe it's the ILS glideslope antenna, but I don't have my Illustrated Warhog book with me at the moment.

What's LAA? I haven't come across that TLA before.

I'm curious about whether this new package of Boeing wings are expected to increase performance at all or if they're just stock replicas of the original design.

Also very interested in how the integration of helmet mounted sighting has been going... is it substantially adding to operational efficiency or is it adding a level of gizmology that is causing more maintenance trouble and actually interfering with combat readiness?

Maybe others already know- but are A-10 drivers moving on to other platforms... in particular F35 / F-16 / F-15E / B-1Bs with the intention of broadening the CAS culture at all or is the level of dedication and expertise in the A-10 community going to die with the A-10?

It doesn't look like the Air Force is going to have an easy time getting rid of the A-10... but I'm curious.

Is the AGM65 really unable to stay stabilized after slewing despite TMS down will stab it.
If so, when did the engineer get fired?
Can I have his address?

Yes it's the ILS antenna, and I too don't know what LAA is.

No way a pilot will know anything detailed about the wings. Asking a pilot how a system works on an A-10C is like asking a secretary why Microsoft word is made a certain way. They can use the systems effectively (most of them anyways) but have no idea how anything works behind the scenes.

As to pilots moving on, yes most will move to other airframes or retire. I think the final nails are being hammered right now in the A-10's coffin, especially after the briefing we got this weekend during drill.

As far as the new wings, they're just that...new wings. The old wings have reached their age limit after 35 some years. They're just adding to the life of the Hog. Nothing has really changed other than the life of the wings.

I've also heard that Boeing has offered to make brand new fuselages, which in essence would make for a brand new A-10...but they were turned down.

The HMIT (Helmet Mounted Integrated Targeting system) mod is working very well. It's kind of like have a HUD with SADL always in view with one eye...so you can have greater SA.

LAA is low altitude autopilot which I should have said "LAAP" because that's the correct acronym. What's "troll-y" about that question is that touching the trim hat with the LAAP on should disengage the LAAP which it doesn't do in DCS.

What's your reference? I can't find anything in the -1 stating such behavior should exists.

I heard it on the Internet. One of these here forums. I have no memory of exactly where, what, or whom for all the help that provides. It seemed believable at the time. A tip of the hat to DCS if it turns out DCS does it right.

You think it was that if you trim ENOUGH in one direction the AP will kick off because of the control limit thing?

Yes, if you trim enough that it takes the ACFT and exceeds the LAAP mode limits it will kick off and use to in DCS but I haven't tried that in a while.

Yeah, no question there. The thing I read suggested that touching the trim hat at all kicks off the LAAP as a matter of course. Now I have 50/50 feelings if it's likely to be either way. Sounds like a good question for a real pilot.

"The thing you read" is not Tech Data. Everything I can find in actual Tech Data makes it appear that DCS is operating correctly.
