A tough fight in an Escadrille LaFayette campaign, begun in October 1917, flying the SPAD VII.
In this patrol, my flight runs into Jasta 5 and a large furball ensues. I had dived out of the mess a distance to clear my tail and re-engage, when I see two Albatrosses behind me. When close, I see that one of them is high-scoring ace Otto Konnecke (35 Kills at wars end), one of the notorious "Golden Triumvirate" of Jasta 5, trying to add me to his score.
It was a difficult 2v1 and they very nearly capitalized on my short stall, after circling above for a few seconds before seeing the opportunity to pounce, and giving me some bullets for my trouble. I barely escaped that predicament and managed to get a few bullets into Otto's wingman, which persuaded him to make a run for home. Konnecke was still coming around on my tail, however, so I let his wingman go.
At that point, it was just Konnecke and myself. I must've injured him pretty badly in that high angle-off diving burst, just after he finished pulling an Immelmann in front of me. He levelled out and tried to head home without much more heavy maneuvering from then on. He and/or his aircraft must've been in critical condition. The two desperate high angle-off but successful bursts saved my biscuit, or it may well have ended poorly for me.
I've not played a flight sim this habitually since the old MicroProse C64 days. Wings Over Flanders Fields is a superb experience. I highly recommend it for those who want a single-player campaign that feels very alive, populated with varied and unpredictable AI pilots.
