A pair of Russian surveillance planes flew close to UK airspace on Wednesday, forcing the RAF to scramble jet fighters.

The Russian plane, reported to be Tupolev 95s, were detected flying off the coast of Scotland. The planes turned away from Britain after the RAF dispatched Typhoon jets from Leuchars airbase, near Dundee.

Russia testing the waters or just business as usual?

EDIT: one of the comments below the article:

If this happens after independence, Scotland will send up its Sopwith Camel to chase any stray Migs out of its airspace.

WTF this is in the news is beyond me. It happens about every second month, and has been for the last decade now.

What a non-story. Our squadron used to launch a few times a year on Q for the same thing, the Russians are exercising their rite to fly in international airspace. Now,if they were to step over the 12 mile limit it would get a little more exciting. Still,I bet the 6 squadron lads got some cracking photos wink

Loving the new Scottish airforce smile

The Soviets/Russians
Have been testing European Air forces readiness for years With the Tupolev 95s
I think they do the same to the US. They allegedly stray in to a Air space and get escorted out.
A Swedish friend of mine was telling me they gave the swedes a wake up call,
One of there bombers penetrated a good distance in to Swedish air space with out being detected
A while ago.

Apparently there was some kind of national holiday in Sweden so all of the pilots were off duty.

I'm getting so paranoid that I'm wondering who decided to make that a story, and why. Someone starting a campaign for reorienting defense capabilities and getting back to a bit of cold war mongering?

Agreed. This is just being sensationalized more by the news media to capitalize on the current Ukraine crisis.

They have been doing this to us on a regular basis over the last 20 or so years. Nothing new here smile

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

More like 50-60 years.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Actually, there was a lull after the collapse of the Soviet Union and until a decade ago, when russian resources wasn't that available.

Haha, oh no we only have one sort-of functioning. The second F-16 was just a decoy balloon on tow.

Kind of like Norway, we have about 15 of 57 F-16s operational right now.

Detect them off the coast of New Zealand and THAT would be surprising.
