I'm looking at tablets but I don't see any platform out there that matches the productivity I get from my Win7 laptop.

There's a bunch of Win8 tablets out now with the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 the typical flagship for this new line of tablets.

I'm thinking I can run any Windows program I want on a tablet sized package and once Truecrypt get properly updated for Win8, I can have all my encryption in place as I currently do for my laptop.

Anyone here made a foray into Windows tablet ? I'd imagine they will be some teething troubles.

We have surface pro avail at work, took one on the road. Hope was I could leave the laptop at the office as they run MS Office apps. Word is OK, doing Powerpoint on a touchscreen is BS. Not long after that, MS brought out MSOffice for iOS which I use in the free (reader only) version now on the ipad, so I haven't made the jump from iOS to Win8 tablet, I still lug around my Win7 laptop (and ipad/kindle depending on the length of the trip).

I have Win8 OEM on our PC at home though. After hating it when it came out (not PC optimised) with the latest updates it has finally got where it needs to be in order to be usable with a mouse, and I can tolerate it now, though to me it offers zero advantages over Win7. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. With the added pain that a couple of my older games won't even run on it.

Heinkill,

That is also one of my chief concerns with Win8.

Microsoft can have moments of brilliance with Win XP and Win7 only to punctuate the track record with crap like Vista and other useless bloatware that does nothing to improve on prior versions.

Commercialism at its worse.

I guess I will just hang on with my old Win7 laptop until those other technology matures sufficiently for me to make the switch. No point to swap now for something new that does not bring anything substantive to the table.

I've had an original Surface Pro (with Type cover) for over a year and am incredibly impressed how good it is as a laptop replacement.
While the touchscreen is useful for flicking through PDFs, I've never used the stylus thing which comes with the device.

I use it as a compact laptop on the road, and when connected to a USB hub, wireless keyboard/mouse and a 50" 1080P TV, it is transformed into as powerful a desktop as I'm ever likely to need.

...and it runs all my favourite DOS games. smile

If you are going for a Microsoft tablet, don't be a fool with the Surface RT. Get the pro instead. RT has a locked version of windows where any application you want has to be grabbed from the Microsoft store. Unfortunately developers have fled this particular platform for richer pastures of android and IOS.

The surface pro on the other hand is not a bad bit of kit, though expensive. The pro 2 initially had a screen overheat issue and not sure if that has been sorted.

I like windows 8 and think it works great as a tablet. Prefer it over android and IOS.

But just don't buy a windows 8 RT anything..... Its locked like apple IOS but the difference is Apple have plenty of apps and development in progress where as Windows 8 RT is stagnant.

Microsoft's original full Windows 8 tablet-laptop hybrid, the Surface Pro, has the same look and the same VaporMg coat as the Surface RT, but has a tweaked kickstand and magnetic connectors for power and the two tear-off keyboards.
It also has a higher resolution 10.6-inch touchscreen with excellent blacks, a smooth, pressure-sensitive stylus and an Intel Core i5 processor.
