I was looking a some retro games today, I remembered thinking they were state of the art at the time of there Release. some of them were ten years old Some older. by todays standard they would be considered pretty poor Graphically. Game graphics and personal Computer/consoles have come along way in ten years. It got me wondering what new innovations will be released in the next ten years or so may be 3d game machines Home holographic Machines, Games with Photo realistic graphics. My dream would be for a holodeck but that may be pushing it to far. Anyway if I owned one Id never get out of It. LoL Watched some good concept videos for apples future ipod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s2oYUy_cVY So what do you tech heads think will be the big innovation in the next ten years or so ?
Yeah I've had those gaming moments in my life where you think "things just can't get better looking than this" and sure enough years down the road they do.
I think immersion will be more of a big thing. Between what TIR has done fore pc pilots and what things like Occulus claim to do I think folks naturally want the experience of "feeling" games or having the sensation of actually being there. I like good games because they can be a great escape from a bad day or life in general and can be a great adventure like a good book.
I think procedurally generated environments is becoming a bigger and more sought after game design which I find cool and once again is great for simming especially space simulations.
There are some games that look great on the surface but are really just a candy-coated B game. I hope it doesn't degrade into some sort of sick scifi deal where people are hidden away in their homes virtually experiencing naughty things.
But a holodeck would be awesome for the simulator crowd having a 360 degree world to fly or sail in. Better AI would nice too. If they could actually achieve the spontaneity and cleverness that humans possess that'd be great for those who prefer single player gaming.
I love what's being done with cloth physics and have always loved and can never go back without basic physics and ragdolls. Cloth physics seems so simple and subtle yet it almost blows you away when you see it in action unexpectedly. I'd like to see more done with the Euphoria engine, blending physics with animations and self preservation algorithms.
Outside of doing multi-megapixel displays and images of the same kinds of stuff we have today, I think the future is in VR.
Those old arcades made by Virtuality showed where things could go, but seem nearly like 1950s tech by today's standards. Oculus Rift gets close to this idea today. The barrier was and remains image resolution and display bulk. Once those are passed, there will be little reason not to have a head tracking, full FOV 3D imaging as sharp as the human eye can see.
Still need some way to instantly flip to a forward view, either optically with some transparent display tech, or digitally with forward facing 3D cameras on the player's head... So you can instantly swap between the game and real world views with no fuss.

I'm thinking something like Occulus Rift, combined with some sort of physical feedback mechanism. I remember a while back there was this vest-thingy that you could wear that would give you feedback when you pulled G's in a flight sim, or got shot in ARMA, that type of thing. It might even still be out there. I'm thinking of some sort of affordable revolution with that kind of device.
You put on your VR headset and your force feedback gear and are totally immersed in a virtual world.

I read an opinion recently, can't recall where, in which the author stated that Star Trek "holo deck" technology was in essence about a decade away.
Not in the exact way as shown on the TV show, IE walking into a room and it is transformed into whatever place you want it to be, but by a direct computer to brain interface via which you are fed visual, tactile and other stimuli to convince you that you are in another reality in which you could then interact with just as if you were there.
I wouldn't be very surprised if he were right.

Still think this is the coolest concept image I have seen. Could you imagine turning your kitchen table in to a full holographic battle ground. Seems like pure sci fi now but who would have thought ten years ago the world would have 3D printers So who knows.

I loved the look of the RUSE trailer years ago. Of course, we still don't have MS Surface pc tables at home and even the game didn't have ships in it, but it sure looked cool.

Never seen that advert before. It was cool even though the attacker should have sent his bombers in first. LoL

There was something sort of like this on Kickstarter maybe 4 months ago? Basically you laid this big carpet-looking thing over a table and then wore these special glasses. The device allowed a 3D image to be projected onto the carpet-thing. Even better was that it could be networked. The demo I saw had these guys playing tabletop Dungeons and Dragons in 3D, with the DM one place and all of the players somewhere else. It was really cool.
I wouldn't even know what to type into Google to find it again, but that football image reminds me of it in principle.

Not sure if holograms will be everybody's cup of tea.... I can see the point where gpus and cpus are shrinking so much in size and exponentially increasing in powerr and in heat dissipation where desktops and laptops will merge into a small single box( like a PS4 or any console but smaller or more compact) with a simple folding keyboard and the ability to display images on a wall or any kind of flat surface in lieu of an embedded or independant display screen ...In fact I can see displays becoming a thing of the past. These hybrids will be highly portable, lightweight, with low power consumption, and of course upagradable.Just 10 years form now
Making things LOOK better is easy. Making them FEEL better is hard. As mentioned, AI is a big hold back and some far older sims did a better job than current ones when it comes to "feeling like you're fighting a human."
Hard to do: AI, atmosphere (it takes time that is rarely available now), a "living world" as opposed to just having what you need (when was the last military sim where you saw civilian planes? Even during Pearl Harbor there were civilian planes in the air)
I don't know how many of those are achievable especially when the stuff that CAN be done is taking more and more manpower to do well.

Making things look better is not easy at all, especially while keeping good FPS, companies wouldn't spend millions trying to get best looking graphics. I'd this is the main problem, game developers mainly focusing on visuals.

Good point. It's rare, but when you have a military shooter that has civilians, it makes it much more realistic and interesting. I think it was Close Combat First to Fight that I first saw that in. Adding that to MP games as well as SP campaigns/co-op would be an advancement, although probably a little controversial. Add consequences, like civilians getting fed up with fighting close to their homes, or getting shot by either force resulting in them taking arms against either team (or both) would be really good.

That's CastAR.It uses a retro reflecting surface to send the image from two projectors that the uses carries over his eyes back at them. It has the potential to be better than the Rift for sims, at least for people with homemade cockpits.
Even the big players are trying to come up with innovative devices Sony released a clever device called the PlayStation move and Game called book of spells And the Microsoft connect is a pretty clever bit of hardware as well
That's it. Man, that is so cool. I hope it works out.
