I think Gladiator is a great film even with all of its historical inaccuracies.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
First time I watched Gladiator (I think I was 19 when it came out) I thought it was good.
A few years later when I got round to watching Spartacus and Ben Hur I realised they just put these two movies in a box, shook it up and Gladiator fell out.

Why can't a work of fiction be set in the past? I thought it was an excellent movie.
I'll add Unforgiven. Yes, it IS a good movie, and the ending is excellent, but it's hardly the end-all be-all of Westerns as many make it out to be. Of the "recent" Westerns, I'd rather watch Appaloosa.
I liked Master and Commander... just didn't like that PC considerations recast the American Privateer as a French Frigate... she was still Boston Built, but strangely used by a French Captain and Crew.
I'd watch more, but there won't probably be more made.
Then again I live in a maritime nation, with a strong tradition of wooden ships and iron men.

I didn't quite get M&C the first time I watched it. I thought it would be about the hunt for the enemy ship, but that wasn't really the point. After I caught on it was more about the life and times, not the mission, I liked it immensely.

The film is just as much about the relationship between Aubrey and Maturin as it is about chasing the French frigate.
@Lieste - As for changing the adversary from American to French, that would be expected since the film was made by a US studio with US money and it was aimed for US audiences. While I personally wouldn't have any problem watching a M&C film with the US as the adversary I can understand why the change was made.

I bought this a couple of years ago in a double feature also including "Mercury Rising" which I though was pretty good for a suspense, conspiracy flick except the kid was annoying.
However, 12 Monkeys.....I always heard it praised and tried to sit down an watch it one day. I repeat I tried to sit down and watch it one day. I maybe watched 15 minutes of it and had to shut it off. Unless I'm missing something I don't get it. It seemed to have no direction and I was bored out of my skull. Maybe I need to let it unfold if that's the issue, needs unfolding, but I don't get it. Based on how it started I'd rather use it as a Frisbee.

Funny thing, that. I agree with most of the "overrated movies" suggestions so far but 12 Monkeys is one of my favorite films. In this case I'm sure it comes down to a matter of personal taste... I thought both Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt were outstanding. The scene where Bruce is in the backseat of Madeleine Stowe's truck and "Blueberry Hill" comes on the radio just kills me every time... the look on Bruce's face is just perfect.

Terry Gilliam's films are definitely not for everyone. His films are off-beat and eccentric and thus won't appeal to mainstream audiences most of the time.

I wouldn't consider myself mainstream. As a kid and to this day one of my favorite movies of all time is "The Mission" with Robert Di Nero. I also love "Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins. Unconventional tastes for a kid growing up. But I also liked Ninja Turtles and Breakin.
I agree with Avatar except for trying to rebrand it as a Dances with Smurfs. Dances with Wolves was a great movie in my opinion. I bought Avatar for my Dad because of the special effects craze around it and he's always liked Scifi. When he was done I tried it. Cool special effects yes, good story no. I got to almost the climax of the movie and just put it away because I not only was thoroughly bored by it, the blatant "preachiness" of its false gospel message was ludicrous and annoying. A movie depicting the good, bad and ugly of any story or issue leveled in an evenhanded manner is one thing and I can appreciate but a movie twitter pated with the idea of trans humanism and promoting that I set myself against.
