Fliegers of all nations come forth!
In this sequel to our other challenge, Eindecker Challenge , we will be avenging the fallen from MFJ 1 from the year previous:

In order to participate in this challenge you must:
1. Declare your interest and intent in this thread on or before Saturday, April 26 2014.
2. Create a pilot using the manual squad creation option flying for the Germans in MFJ 1 with a start date of June 1, 1917 with the rank of Flugmaat.
3. Commit to flying 4-7 missions per week with this pilot, but no more than one per campaign day.
4. Report at least every weekend in this topic thread with his current successes or failures.
5. Faithfully communicate to your brethren the falling of your avatar when such event actually transpires.

We’ll be starting exactly one year to the campaign date after our last challenge. This gives us the continued opportunity to explore the water mod by AnKor and also to report on the new Albatros flight model that came out a few weeks back. From a story standpoint, we are avenging the death of our overzealous younger brother, so enlisting in the same squadron is a symbolic gesture as well…and, we should survive for more than 2 missions!

Reporting can be by any of the following methods:
-Text is good
-Pictures are better
-Videos are what this sim is made for!

Check out some of Louvert’s journaling from the last challenge if you want to see some top of the line work on reporting!

This is single elimination, so one death and you are out. Keep in mind that even if you are not playing "dead is dead" in the workshop, at the end of each mission it will still tell you that "Sadly, your pilot has died" if his injuries were fatal so you don't need to switch your settings for this. If you land behind enemy lines with less than DID workshop settings, use these guidelines: in or on the edge of No Mans Lines, you escape. Within 5 miles of the front, 50-50 (flip a coin). More than 10 miles behind the lines, you are captured, war over!

When you set up your pilot, click on "Manual Squad Deployment" in the lower right hand corner of the enlistment page. Set up the following screen so it looks like this:

Scoring- I changed a few values based on recommendations from last time.:

Missions: +1 point each
Time survived: +2 points each week
Confirmed kill: +3 points each
Becoming an ace: +5 points (only once)
Promotion: +5 points each promotion
Medals: +3 points each

Remember, this is not a cakewalk! Be careful out there, “Bloody April” is over, SE5a’s and Camels are ascendant, not to mention SPADs!

Based on the last challenge, I think we can have a hard end date of Sunday, May 18. That gives us three weeks and a day. Then we can tally the points and declare a winner. You are certainly free to continue to fly your pilot after that if still alive, but for point determination, we need a cut-off date. MFair has generously offered to supply a WWI Russell Smith print as first prize!!!

Permissions:
You may use whatever aids you are used to using. Flight model should be realistic and you should have weapons jams and limited ammo and all that jazz... The point is to have fun and we had outstanding support and sportsmanship from all fliers last time and we would love to see some new faces!

As far as time advancement, please follow these guidelines:

Allow time to advance as normal except fly no more than one mission per campaign day (time advance manually as necessary)

For every month of campaign time, you can advance two days on the calendar. (48hr pass to visit mum)
For every promotion, advance five campaign days.
For every five kills, advance 3 campaign days.
For becoming an ace, advance 3 campaign days (cumulative with 5 kills above)

Well, that's it. I had a great time in the last challenge and even though I died on my second mission, I really enjoyed reading about the exploits and hardships of everyone else, especially since I felt like I lived through the same missions, as far as the N11 scourge is concerned.
RR

Official challenge start time is Saturday, grab some QC time in those Albatri and we’ll be (W)OFF!

List of Pilots:
Rick Rawlings 27
Robert Wiggins
gecko 34
Rover 27 55
77 Scout 18
loftyc
MFair 57
Leaf85 22
Nefaro
nbryant d.n.p.
RAF Louvert 85
Shiloh
pkpowers

Al Lowe d.n.p.
Leadtail 9
Glubber
corsaire31 11

Strikethrough indicates a pilot's demise, d.n.p. = did not participate, number to the right of the pilot is the final score

I'm in Rick. If I'm still alive (which will be highly unlikely) I may have to cut off my exploits as I will be unable to continue from May 9th for a week. I will check in on the 18 May to see what happened.

Hi Rick. Thank you for yet another event. I really enjoyed the video intro and the Hun Solo portrait)))

I think I'll join it even though I have no brother from part 1 to avenge. All of us Fliegers are like brothers anyway. Count me in.
Btw, do we start April 26 or it doesn't matter?

Ha! Great video Rick. I am totally 'in' as well. These challenges give me an extra boost to get flying some missions. Looking forward to it.

Yes, create your pilot now, rum some quick combat practice flights (click "Pilot Never Dies" or whatever that setting is) and official missions start on Saturday!

I'm glad you guys liked the video, we had script problems from day one and our lead actor was a total prima donna and we ran out of funding for the great CGI farm scene we had planned, but I figured you guys deserved some production value!

The print is a limited edition print. "The Eagle and the Butterfly" with Remarque. Russell Smith Studios. If you are not familiar with his work you need to have a look. He is not only a good artist but he "feels it" if you now what I mean. Good luck to all pilots, get your game face on and watch you rear!

My sentiments exactly Glubber. Balance is key in this life and what's a little less sleep in the whole scheme of things?

I need to practice a bit as I haven't flown an Albatros in maybe two years since my early OFF days. I do remember the Alb.D.III tends to want to stall while turning at higher altitudes and I tended to take my fights lower. Am I thinking of the right craft?

All FMs have been updated since OFF and, on top of that, the Albatros has recently gotten an extra dose of update sauce, so it should be new and exciting for all of us!

The Albatros isn't bad right now. Some of the earlier models are definitely a bit sluggish at high altitude so it takes a little practice to find their limits, as with any model. There are even small differences between different sub-types, methinks. Luckily they're easy to get out of a spin and I've definitely resorted to spinning them when I couldn't shake an AI on my tail.

I think they turn fairly well, once you're familiar with them, but their biggest strength compared to Nieuports and Fokker DrIs is their sturdiness. I can hold a tight & steady turn with the Albatros wings screeching and moaning for an endless amount of time. The other aircraft will similarly moan, but only for a brief time and then silence.. surprisingly followed by a 'Snap!' and wings being broke off, putting the plane into a death spin. The Albatros doesn't have that odd silent death, and almost never snaps wings in a turn anyway.

I have occasionally experienced the right-rolling stall behavior, as if it's a rotary, in the "D.V (uprated)" but I think this only happens sometimes when at low speed and high altitude while turning left. With the specific start we have, I'm hoping to avoid flying that specific one. Much rather have a D.III OAW.

We should probably take time in our first 'orientation flight' mission to fly around and get familiar with our new mount. I'm always worried about straying too far off from my flight because your autopilot will only stay on mission within a certain range of them and trying to catch up from a long distance can end up with you getting pounced without support nearby. But immediately testing a new type's limits can't be a bad idea, even if you miss out on something, right?

We're using the Engine Failure option too, right?

I've had it on for awhile.. just wanted to verify.

We're also using gun accuracy set to normal across the board too, I suppose? Just the TAC, Padlock & Label stuff to preference?

That's a good point. I have been using "less accurate" on rear guns, because those rear gunners are brutal, but we should all be on the same page. So I will switch to "normal" for the challenge.

I was also thinking of lowering it in my campaigns, but I'll wait until this challenge is over before doing so.

Well, it's April 26 in Siberia and I'm ready to report on my first mission.
First of all, let me introduce myself. Martin Uberflieger, Flugmaat, 24 years old.
This is my photo after my very first mission which was a success. Being a bit superstitious, I didn't want to take picture before my first flight.

Now, here's what happened that day

I hope the text is readable on the images.

Alright, gone bagging. Will be back soon.

Good luck everyone and see you in Aertrycke. After all, we're flying in the same squadron.

Regards,
Martin

Didn't really try the Albatros in WOFF yet, so it seems to be a good reason to start !

Funny, neither of the two FE2's exploded in front of me were subject to claiming. No. 1 was stolen by another Flieger and no.2 by somebody else.

DH5s would be fun I should think. Well done Rover_27.

Rick, in an effort to get even more folks to join in on your stellar invitationals I've taken the liberty of designing a participation medal that you could present to all those who give these a go. Each event would generate a new bar attachment for said medal.

Ah, that must be the so-called Ehrenkreuz für WOFF-Flieger. smile

I won't participate (too busy with my Jasta 1 career), but as always, I'll enjoy reading your reports. You should have better survival rates now when you're no longer flying Eindeckers!

Yes Hasse, the Ehrenkreuz für WOFF-Flieger, a rare and most-coveted award.

Robert, WOFF is still OFF and the devs still use the same logo on all their product placement shots. It is, after all, "WINGS: Over Flanders Fields". The colon makes all the difference, (just ask a gastroenterologist ... oh, wait ... wrong colon).

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - June 01, 1917

This morning is my first mission with MFJ 1 from Aertrycke airfield. Weather is nice and sunny, except for a low cloud layer around 2000m. A 6 knots light breeze blows from the NNW and brings us fresh air from the North Sea. We are five pilots in our Albatros DIII, under command of Oberleutnant zur See Paul Kunstler. This is my first combat flight in this plane and I feel a bit nervous. The mission is to reach the front lines some 30km away and patrol for a half hour. We have a couple of observation Drachen in the air behind several of our infantry units and they could attract some enemy planes, besides the usual reco two seaters the Brits are sending daily over the front.
The noise of the five 170HP Mercedes engines really wakes me up and we roll down the airfield one by one. Take off is easy, we form up in two groups of 3 and 2 planes and head northeast for a long circling climb close to the sea. Once we break through the cloud layer and reach 2500m, our flight leader heads to the front, still climbing. It is only a few minutes flight and we reach our northern infantry unit at 3000m. From there we are supposed to head southeast along the front, flying above our Drachen.
Instead of respecting the plan, ObltzS Kunstler keeps on flying straight west, crossing the frontline and heading into enemy territory. This is totally opposed to the general instructions we have received to stay on our side of the lines, and moreover I'm not ready to go on a foolish raid on my first mission. I decide to fly back to our side of the front and follow the patrol path over the Drachen. In case of problems back at the field, I can always pretend I had a mechanical failure of some kind and had to return to base... Soon the four Albatros are little grey dots against the white clouds underneath and finally disappear. Once I reach the southernmost Drachen, I turn around and fly another leg along the front. As I reach the northern waypoint and prepare to head east to Aertrycke, I spot two planes coming back from the other side of the lines. They are too far to identify and are flying apart from each other, and I hope they are from my flight. Some 10 minutes later I land at our homefield. Unfortunately noone is to be seen on or around the airfield.
I will finally learn that all my Kameraden from the flight have landed at another field closer from the front. One of the airplanes was destroyed on landing and written off, but its pilot, the ace Oberflugmeister Josef Rohe was only lightly wounded (being an ace has many good points...smile2) They all have been in a fight with some DH5. Oberflugmeister Michael Löwenhardt claims two, and Flugmaat Kaspar Winkler one (his own airplane has a few holes in it and will need two days of repair). Nobody asked me anything about why I had lost contact with the flight, they all knew it was my first mission ! I won't tell anyone either they have broken the rules and flown deep into enemy territory...

* Personal notes : I found the Albatros DIII relatively easy to fly, tried a few manoeuvers with it before landing. Found it was nose heavy (with 95% throttle it keeps going very slowly down) this was different from the Strutter I had flown right before, where I had to lower throttle a bit to have it fly straight.

I'm back from mission 6 and I really don't know how I'm still alive!!! It's a flipping massacre up there! I have my air activity set to medium but the sky is just swarming with all kinds of enemy planes.
Excellent choice of period and region, Rick. Thank you for unforgettable experience. My palms are sweaty - I'll take a break. Stay tuned for more reports and good luck to you all.
Btw, how many planes give me an ace? Is it five? So, I can have 3 days advancement after every five kills?

LOL!

Have you only been playing early war lately?

You should see it in 1918! They're everywhere and in larger groups. eek2

And yes, I must admit I usually start most of my careers as early as I can hoping to go through the war. It's probably because I never had such opportunity in RoF.

My first mission started off similar to Rover's 3rd mission.

Three Sopwith Tripes were circling high above our airfield. What was supposed to be a patrol behind friendly lines quickly turned into a scramble mission against enemy scouts overhead.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all that interesting other than a couple Tripes taking a pass at me and when I reversed on them and fired, they climbed away. After a short pursuit, I realized I couldn't catch my man and the rest of my flight had disappeared, so it was back home.

If this is the way my initiation into the Jasta goes, I'm afraid to see what the future holds!

I have also finished my second mission, but I will be uploading the video for that one as it was more interesting. Hopefully I can get some better quality from YouTube's compression on this one compared to the last.

I was in flight B with 6 other fellow pilots. Our mission was to patrol a friendly airfield. We took off at 8:19 in the morning. Weather was good, flight was short! As we were climbing to our mission altitude we were jumped by a flight of Spad VII's over our field. As i was the tail of the formation I was targeted by the lead Spad. I waited as long as I could before breaking out of formation to give my fellow squad mates a chance to engage the Spads on better terms. I waited a little to long a show by the picture of the damage to my left wing!

Luckily I was able to land at our air field in one pieces. Stats for mission 1.

I wonder how long I can survive if this is what is in store for me? Nevertheless I shall soldier on for the father land but mostly for my master!

Burk Willitz' second mission, on June 2, ends up with a dogfight against a flight of Pups.

Video:

I felt the heat off some of those tracers!

Result:

One Pup claimed after putting 48 rounds into him. Better than my last video's ~70 it took. biggrin

So we're allowed to do seven per week? Or do we just go until our virtual pilots are dead?

The 1 mission per day thing was for the WOFF campaign days (make sure to turn on the Time Advance option in the workshop!). Didn't see anything about RL limits.. do we have some?

Yeah seven per week max, that way we don't get too far out in front of each other, and we also have some range of equality for point determination (not that I think anyone is obsessed with winning). Great video Nefaro, those Pups were tenacious, and it cost one of them that last flight!

So, as Saturday is winding down, here is my current list of pilots:
Rick Rawlings
Robert Wiggins
gecko
Rover 27
77 Scout
loftyc
MFair
Leaf85
Nefaro
nbryant
RAF Louvert
Shiloh
pkpowers
Al Lowe
Leadtail
Glubber
corsaire31

Let me know if I am missing anybody. I will add them to the first post so we can keep an easier track on the body count this time!

Robert, I just got a chance to watch your (1st one, I'm not that fast!) video, I like that faded label effect, nice and subtle. Also good to see a Spieler back in action!

Oberflugmaat Hun got through one so far. Objective was to go down to Paschendaele for a bit, with Schwarm Eins flying top. Now, as we were circling for height, I looked back and there they were, But I wondered how would I know if they were friend or for if I hadn't been told? I mean, wouldn't it be just wonderful if a saw a plane behind me that was supposed to be ours, but wasn't? Sure enough, down by P, we were flying around some black puffs, and my buddies were behind me, except that you know damn well that it started to shoot at me, and was in fact a Spad that no else seemed too interested in. Got away, and got in line as the rest of my 'friends' were circling to land at the field SW of P., except that there were two more Spads just flying through them, with no one on either side concerned! Two days to patch my wings, I'm told.

Well, here is Mohr Fahnn, Jhastfur's older, wiser and hopefully more successful brother:

On his first combat mission schwarm zwei is tasked with intercepting enemy aircraft spotted on our side of the lines! It seems some bombers were spotted en route to the deodorant factories in Menen, so off we went. Here's our flight patrolling in force:

We patrolled around for quite some time but no one wanted to come out to play. I began to think that after just one mission, this war was going to be a bust! Here's a particularly steely portrait of Mohr:

Could'a been Russell Smith's model for the Red Baron looking so chiseled, eh?
Just when I was sure that no enemy forces were actually going to arrive, some dots appeared over the front headed our way! Better yet, my flight seemed interested in the dots, so off we went. Once we got close enough, turned out the dots were just friendly dots...

So we went home...
So far, alive to tell the tale!

Phone call in enemy flight spoted inbound to friendly airfield. We have been tasked with intercepting it. We lifted of at 5:12 in the morning! I haven't even had my coffee yet! They shall pay for that! Target are of reports to where they enemy flight is headed is Wasquehal. We made good time heading to the area to find nothing, not a single plane in the sky friend or foe. Our flight leader had us circle for 25 min. before giving the signal to head back home. We landed with no troubles. Next time "Yankee Doodle pigeon" next time.

Ah! Mohr's second flight was more like what I thought the first one would be from the intercept orders. This one was supposed to be escorting reconnaissance, but as soon as we took off we were jumped by about a half dozen or so DH5s. I got the video, but the sound was porked for some reason. I will still show it, as it is reasonably exciting what with me trying not to get shot down, collided with (failed on that attempt), crashed into the deck or killed by our ridiculously persistent a.a.

Here you go:

Long of the short of it, a good day for MFJ1. We shot down 3 of them with no losses to ourselves and Mohr gets his first confirmed kill and his Ehrenbecher!

Mission #3 was quite a hairy one in the end. I wasn't sure if I would be having tea with the British for the rest of the war.

It may end up being a 2-part video set. Stay tuned. popcorn

Burk Willitz' June 3rd Mission #3.

Our flight encounters a group of Sopwith Strutter two-seaters and engages.

(Part of my extended tail chase of the second craft was cut to save time.)

Final Outcome:

Q: If I spend 15 days in captivity, or wounded, does that mean that I don't run missions for the same amount of real world time? Or is it still a solid 7 Missions per week? (I didn't do the Eindecker Challenge so I'm not familiar with some of the finer points).

Outstanding reports and screenies and videos everyone, well done! Nice to see that none of our comrades has fallen as of yet. I'll be getting in some flying today as I was away from my 'mount' all day yesterday.

So then, with this new item of only 7 missions per real world 7 days it would appear that we all will be flying 23 missions regardless of anything that happens in the sim, apart from our pilot actually dying. Also, unless some folks are using the easy settings, (or unless you end up in hospital for extended stays), there will probably be no promotions in only 23 missions. That should tighten up the race considerably and likely result in one or more ties. Any ideas Rick on how a tie will be handled in this event?

Keep flying smart, Gents! pilot

@ Nefaro

I would say you advance 15 days in sim time (will be done automatically) and keep on flying, but I will let the organisation confirm...

The funny part of this report is that you have landed behind enemy lines, but your plane needs 1 day for repair and workshop is going to work on it right away ! (do they send special teams over at night ?)
You also are requested to fill in a report form for your claims (that you will have to send by mail from the other side ?) smile2

Corsaire, THAT is called German efficience! Mmuahahahahaaa!!!

Baron von Muttley, Burck Willitz, Mohr Fahnn?
The family names you guys are come up with are ridiculous! But funny! biggrin

I would have loved to join you guys with MFJ I, as I am from a coastal region
and really feel at home there. But I will be on vacation for two weeks
from 12 May on. I will fly my own MFJ I pilot like a one-man sideshow
and feel related to you guys.

Thanks for clarifying the mission thing. I'm sure the scoring will be tight, so it's good that you thought of that.

My concern about the captured & injured days off is that we score points for how long we survive. So 15 days away would mean an extra +4 (at +2/wk rate) which would end up rewarding us for being shot or captured. Perhaps such days shouldn't be counted towards scoring? Or better yet .... the length of survival should be measured by number of missions completed instead of number of weeks?

Another problem will be people who get more than one kill confirmed at the same time as their first. In these cases, WOFF doesn't reward German pilots with the Goblet "medal" for their first kill as the trigger doesn't fire when they receive more than one on the same day. So the +3 for that one should probably be awarded to anyone with one confirmed kill, amiright?

I suppose we're refining the campaign challenge stuff as it matures? ahoy Sorry if I'm over-analyzing but that's how my brain tends to operate. The developers probably cringe when they see me posting in the Tech Issues section. exitstageleft

LOL! Yeah.

I laughed about the repair message after I ended my mission. Considering I parked the thing right between the allied trenches and a long line of barbed wire a ways out in front of it, they must've been a pretty damn good recovery team!

Well, THAT name was obvious of course! biggrin
"Willes" is a German family name, by the way. Bruce Willis was even born in Germany,
in Idar-Oberstein. But I wonder "Mohr Fahnn" was coming from?

"Mohr" is an old German word for "negro" - it came from the first dark tanned
men the Europeans had seen back in the days of Crusades; those were "Maures".
But "Fahnn"? No idea what inspired the whole name...

I figured there was a name related to "Willis" in German, but I didn't know how it would be spelled. Now I do!

They were the Moors. That's the English version of the word, anyway. They were the Muslims from North Africa, some of whom were pushed out of Spain in the Reconquista of course. Not sure if they used that term during the Crusades or if it came later, however.

Good flying so far mates! I cant' wait to go through here with a hot cup of tea and really read these all carefully. But right now I only have time to fly and report. Introducing Erich Amsel and his all black Albatros. Amsel translates to blackbird, hence the color of my crate. Amsel is flying naked as they say (no aids), and his first mission of escorting DFW.CVs over the front went off without a hitch...almost.

Mission 1 / 1 June 1917
My 4 mates and I took off from Aetrycke airfield at 0818 hours with a mission to escort DFW.CVs from Bosta 5 over the lines. Things were going well as we provided top cover 1,000 or so feet over our cargo when suddenly I looked down over the side and saw some white craft attacking. Wind through the wires on a spiral down I flew making up ground with every second as I saw a Nieuport 23 circling and chasing one of our 2 seaters.

I maneuvered to get behind him but found the Nieups turn very well indeed. Finally, I got into position until I was so close I could smell his exhaust and ripped some bursts into his tail and body. I fired until I thought we might collide then pulled up at the last second. When I circled about I saw him start to nosedive into the ground and that was it for that scrap. We were right between Passchendaele and St. Julien at this point. No other enemy craft were to be found so I proceeded to climb and find the rest of the DFWs and my mates as well.

I located my mate Osterkamp but none of my other flight were to be found. We located the DFWs again and flew top cover for them for the next 20 minutes or so until we started running low on fuel.

We made our way back without incident but as we descended on our airfield I saw some black puffs down through the clouds. When I got through the clouds I spied a lone DH5. Osterkamp and I gave chase at around 2,000 ft. but we lost him in some heavy, low clouds. When I finally caught his scent again he was close to the lines and too far to pursue. Low on fuel and exhausted we turned back and landed at Aetrycke without incident.

Three of our flight crashed, but we're all alive and we managed to take down two enemy craft. All the DFWs made it back safely I later heard, so first mission accomplished.

Hey, that's exactly my case and I'm now an ace without a goblet which is kinda sad.

Anyway, since we have everything calculated I think I'll fly my 23 missions while I have time (and if I have the brains to stay alive, of course) because I finished my number 7 today and found it pretty difficult to stop at that point.

Bad luck pkpowers, but know that your death shall be avenged by your comrades still in the fight.

Karl Heusinger's first mission with MFJ 1 was an intercept flight along the lines down towards Passchendeale. It did NOT go as he had imagined it would, despite the morning being beautiful, clear, and bright.

Midway along Karl and his comrades caught sight of a group of enemy buses returning to the west and they decided to give chase. As they crossed over the lines northeast of Poperinghe the rest of the flight gave up the chase but Karl, likely due to his greenness and youth, continued to close the gap.

He got within gunning range of the trailing enemy two-seater, which he had determined was one of three RE8s, and opened fire. Funny thing about being in gunning range, he quickly learned, was that it works equally well both ways. As his target keeled over in front of him his petrol tank was suddenly holed by shots coming from the remaining two hostile craft and Karl had to quickly turn tail and make for home.

He was losing precious fuel much faster than he'd first realized and when his mount went silent it was all the young flieger could do to glide into No Man's Land, settling down on what he was sure was the friendly side of the trenches.

But a raiding party of Tommies quickly grabbed him and hurried him off to a nearby trench. As luck would have it though, not 30 minutes later a troop of about 50 German soldiers made a raid of their own and freed the young flieger, bringing him back to their own trenches, (along with a lot of souvenirs). Two days later Karl was back at Aertrycke where he learned his plane had been somehow returned to the flugplatz and had been repaired. He'd also had a claim submitted on his behalf for the RE8 he had shot down. German efficiency indeed!

Try to be more careful, gentlemen! Otherwise my prediction of you suffering lighter casualties when you don't have to fly Eindeckers will turn out to be completely wrong. biggrin

I regret to inform you sir that Erich Amsel has succumbed to wounds received today in a heroic fight near Zemelden. We were tasked to defend the factories there from an incoming flight. Just as we arrived we ran headlong into a flight of 9 Bristol.F2b's. I was quite engaged myself as we were outnumbered by almost double but let me retell what I witnessed.

Amsel engaged with no less than 4 Bristol F2.b's and put bullets into all of them. As they ran for the lines he continued to fire at them - which infuriated those pilots no doubt. Each time they came back to fight he gladly engaged them in some of the most dynamic low level fighting I have ever witnessed. Amsel was noted to have skimmed the tree tops with his craft at least once, yet he continued to fight.

On one occasion, he had an F2.b in his sights and as his bullets hit home, the enemy craft jerked straight up into the air. To my horror I watched Amsel do everything in his power to pull up but then there was a terrible sound which meant only one thing...a collision. His craft did not seem so bad off as compared to the F2.b but nonetheless he could not pull up and went head-first into the ground. He lay not too far from the enemy he had downed. When I landed and examined the wreck it seemed like he might have survived. Yet, as I inched closer I could see that he died with his eyes open and with a curious small smile on his face. It seems odd now, but he appeared contented with his fate.

Amsel fought like a lion, and died like a man. I am saddened to report this sir yet feel honored to have served with him.

Your obedient servant,
Theodor Osterkamp

It's quite alright Lou. Nice job by you in staying out of enemy hands. I'm actually relieved as I'm prepping for final exams and it will be a busy week. This craft doesn't suit my style of fighting anyhow and if I had a nickel for every time I almost stalled it on this last flight, I'd have about $1.15.

Nooo! The disappearances have begun in earnest. The enemy two-seaters seem to be the most deadly at the moment.

I fear that my capture & escape may only be a short reprieve from a future, more permanent, fate.

Yeah, 7 mission per real week tops, wounded, grounded whatever you don't need to stop if you have less than 7

That should tighten up the race considerably and likely result in one or more ties. Any ideas Rick on how a tie will be handled in this event?

That's right, it was the same system last time, only you were the only one to make it that far! biggrin
My gut feeling is that there are enough wildcards built into the scoring system and the randomness of sim life itself that a tie is pretty unlikely. If it does come up, we can have a fly off or something like that. Sudden death with Morane Parasols at 1000 yards...

In real life, survival was a reward, so I wanted that to count for something. If you weren't captured, you would do something like 10 or more missions in those two weeks, so you would get more points for that. It's another little sim wild card that we just have to deal with.
Good point on the cup. There seems to be still a bug for how medals trigger. The first one we can tell for sure, but the others not so much. Let's shelve this one for now and discuss it as the challenge gets closer to the end...

Well, obviously we won't know when you fly them and it is hard to stop when you are on a roll! Be careful though, that is when it is easy to drift into "just one more kill" mode and make a mistake! I fly a few and then take some time to live vicariously though all the other great stories on here. Good work guys and keep it up!

@pkpowers and Shiloh, no shame in an early death, you put up the good fight! Who knows what young Voss or Mannock, Richtofen or Nungesser never got a chance to shine because they were unfortunately cut down after only a few missions!

Wow, I think I got through all the posts!

Thanks, I feel honoured - but my MFJ-I pilot flies earlier than you guys; in May 1917.
I'll continue him as a side-show to your deeds. I guess your end it's harder - with
the real nasty planes like the Brisfit and the Camel.

Well, almost - but not really. With German writing it would have to be something like
"Dschust Forfann" and "Mohr Fann". The "h" makes it a loooong "a".

Flight B was to patrol enemy lines. As we where climbing for altitude a flight of 5 Morane L's came flying by. Our leader made no attempt to engage these planes. So I dove out of formation to attack the group alone. One of the observers hit me and my fuel tank I was soon out of fuel and hurt so I glided back down to the field and managed to land safely. I now must spend 10 days in the hospital.

So to under stand the rules can I still fly 4 more missions for this week or do I wait till next week before I fly again?

Didn't notice before, but it looks like my pilot has a twin brother ... smile2
When shooting the Nupe, you almost got the wings in your teeth ! There was another close call during the earlier fight.
Well done ! thumbsup

You can keep flying 4 missions, it's only sim time which will advance 10 days.

Mission 1: Escort mission, six in flight. We got to the rendezvous but no two seaters. We circled for about 20 minutes headed in the direction they would be taking. Near Haggonmuller I noticed a fight going on down below to our left. Diving in I spotted a lone Pup trying to get out of the action. I went after him and soon wondered what was up because this pilot was good! We had a turning battle with a few head to head runs but I could not hit the mark. Finally saw pieces fly off his plane on the last head on pass and when I turned 3 of my flight went on him like vultures! He spun into the ground in a heap. The fight all over we headed home without any other enemy being sighted.

Dearest Papa,
I arrived unscathed! The train from Munich was slowed- we were attacked once by RFC but there was little damage and now I am here in Flanders. I must say I am happy I am no longer a submariner but free to breathe clean air most of the time. My first air mission was supposed to be a familiarization flight, ordered by the Kommandant to explore the local lands from the air and memorize landmarks for navigation.

We were to fly up to the coast and then down the lines but never got the chance. The air raid sirens and flak guns went off just as we were trundling over the grass. I managed to get my machine into the air well enough but Horst Steinmauer (you recall me mentioning Horst from Flieger Schule?) was so badly shot up he burst into flames and crashed into the farmer’s fence that surrounds the field.

The Nieuport 17 that got Horst, who was to my right, must have taken a flak burst because he suddenly swerved in front of me. I just reacted and fired. His engine suddenly belched black smoke and he augered in from about 800 feet, the impact just at the edge of our field.

The first thing I thought of was revenge for cousin Georg’s death last spring but then my own engine just quit. I managed to safely land across the way into the nearby farmland. To my embarrassment I had left the radiator closed and my engine overheated.

We had the rest of the day off, Horst was taken to the local casualty clearing station and then a train ride back to Berlin. Bad burns I hear. I will write his mother soon.

This morning the Kommandant presented me with a small silver cup in honour of my confirmed victory. We were then ordered to fly a similar patrol as yesterday but on the flight line my engine gave out again—the boys say it was a cracked cylinder and they will take several hours to change out the engine. I was given mess duty for the rest of the day and so thought I should take a few minutes and write you. Could you send another dozen cartons of cigarettes and a tube of mustache wax? All my love, Karl

Total Flight Time: 23 minutes

Notes: engine failure x2

Sorry to hear 2 of our brethren have fallen. Otto von Fair has flown 6 missions with 6 confirmed kills. As soon as I get my screenshots sorted out I will post missions 2 through 6. Having a great time on a rainy Sunday!

June 2nd. Otto von Fair. Mission 2 was Patrol Friendly area. 5 in Flight. Spotted 2 Nieuports closing on 2 of our 2 seaters north of Lille. Dove on them and they climbed to attack. I got on the tail of 1 and sent him to the ground in a spin. My flight got the other and we returned home a happy bunch as we had lost 2 pilots on the 1st mission.

We received a call for incoming HA. climbing into our crates we quickly climbed out. Over St. Maria-Aalter I spotted 5 Spads at 11 oclock and 6 Neiuports at 2 oclock at our elevatin. Boy, is this going to be fun! We attacked the Spads as they were a bit closer. After a few turns the Neiups joined the fight. What happened next is pretty much a blur. Turn, climb, short bust at fleeting target, avoid collision, shoot again, check my tail....Wow! Then all of a sudden everyone had had enough and turned for home. I was pretty sure I had downed 1 or 2 but upon returning to base no one saw a plane go down! On the other hand, none of ours had gone down either so it was a good day.

Otto von Fair, June 4th. Patrol Enemy Lines. Uneventful flight.
June 5th, 7 in flight. Intercept mission. Climbed out and intercepted 7 Spads 6 miles east of Diksmulde. Claimed 2 on this mission.
June 6th. We were to patrol our airfields. We intercepted 3 FE2's near Ostende. Closing in from below and behind my guns jam. I manage to clear 1 gun and sent one down in flames. Closed in on the next one and he exploded in mid air nearly causing me to mess my flightsuit!. The third was a sitting duck for my last rounds in the unjammed gun and he exploded as well.

Well I have spent the day flying my 7 missions. All is good with Otto so far. I will be looking forward to seeing all of your progress and reading you flight reports and will be rooting for you all from the back of a horse the rest of the week!

BTW... Congratulations on reaching Ace MFair!

I'm not sure what everyone's kill total is at the moment, but you must be in or near the lead.

I need to remember to occasionally post a screenshot of my pilot's personnel page. Unfortunately he hasn't had his three claims confirmed yet, even after two weeks of vacation with the British. *Taps feet*

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 2, 1917

This afternoon, HQ has decided we should show our strength to the Brits. Schwarm zwei, still under command of Oblt zur See Paul Kunstler is about to take off with 7 planes, while Schwarm eins, led by Oblt zur See Bertram Heinrich will follow us with 7 other planes. We are tasked with the defense of our Drachen west of Passchendaele. Feeling safe to be surrounded by 13 other pilots, I take off at 15:20 as number 6 of Schwarm zwei, with Flugmaat Kaspar Winkler as Rottenflieger. Weather is almost the same as yesterday, with only 3 knots of wind. There are still some scattered clouds at 2000m, but we can see much more blue sky. We form up with five planes in a forward wedge and our two planes trailing. We climb near the sea until we are above the clouds and fly towards the two Drachen close to the front. I can see Schwarm eins right behind us flying in the same formation. I guess the bad guys will think twice before attacking us ! It only takes a few minutes to reach the front and we follow it down to Passchendaele, overflying the two Drachen. I think we are going to turn around to patrol the front some more, but suddenly all the Albatros in front of me go to a trail formation and take the landing pattern above Passchendaele airfield. Probably our leader had some problem and want it fixed before returning to Aertrycke... I look behind to see what Schwarm eins is doing, but can't see any of them, could be a cloud is between us ! I land with the other
planes of the Schwarm. No encounter with enemy planes for the second mission.

We will return later to Aertrycke and discover that Schwarm eins had left the mission path to engage some enemy planes over the front. Flugmeister Alrich Hauber has not made it back yet and is reported missing, Flugmeister Carl-August Holck has been killed, and Oberflugmeister Gotthard Sachsenberg had to make a crash landing in our lines and is only lightly wounded, although his Albatros is utterly destroyed. Three other planes will need a couple of days to be able to fly again. Noone of the returning pilots has claimed a victory.

Not a good day for MFJ-1, the show of strength did not turn out as the HQ had expected !

Well, missions #3 and #4 were uneventful for Mohr Fahnn.
Mission 3 was a jaunt to the south of Kortrijk. The exhaust from our engines made it hard to see the field:

Schwarm Zwei had 8 planes take off and one turned back with engine trouble, but that left a considerable force of 7 Albatri to be reckoned with.

Still, we returned with no enemy contact...

With mission 4, we even poked our noses out at the front lines trying to entice the Entente forces to come play as we made our way to Roubaix. Still nothing though, which was hardly surprising I guess, as we were out in staffel strength. 15 Albatros DIIIs would make anybody think twice about getting out of bed. The only other thing I saw in the skies were the thunderheads we had been warned about in the weather reports:

Finally after 78 minutes of flight time, we returned home:

Oberflugmaat Hun is dead. In the 2nd mission, he lasted maybe 30 seconds in his first dogfight before being shredded by a pup. That's actually longer than I expected, given that I got shot down during QC practice every time. Seriously, how do you fight with a plane that only turns one way?

Don't try to turn with him. Yo-yos work quite well to keep yourself above him while allowing you regular gun solutions. Sorry to hear of the loss of your pilot, loftyc.

Horst Spieler just finished mission #6 No enemy encountered except a software problem with "sticky Keys" assignment which bumped me out of the WOFF screen with WOFF still running. Fortunately I was on autopilot but I lost the tailing end of my vid capture. When I got back into WOFF my mission ended safely with me returning to base but the debrief said I was still in the air when the mission ended. I HATE those damned "STICKY KEYS". I've got to find a way to disable it.

I was being a good boy and following my leader, figuring there must be a good reason why he was taking the particular path he was when the pups came in. And they just plain flew circles around us. Well, at least around me, anyway; I can't say I have any clue what might have been happening anywhere else. I decided to leave my formation and try to save myself, but too late: a pup was already on my six, and I may have heard him laugh at my meager 'maneuvering' to try to lose him. His first burst blew up the engine, blew off all the wings, and hit me. Pretty anticlimactic.

Sorry to see I end LoftyC. Well now you can spend more time in QC working on your technique. You will figure it out I'm sure. You can't turn with them so just don't go that route. Like Lou said, break in shallow dive and use your energy to gain alt. Your turns should be elliptical with intention of keeping him in front of you as you come down on him and if he passes you use your energy to climb. If you have lots of energy then go over the top in loop and come back down on him and repeat if necessary you need to keep the energy and height advantage. It's hard for me to describe it properly but I hope you get the gist of it.

Also loftyc, you may want to check your joystick sensitivities in the workshop. I had a much easier time not stalling after I lowered the sensitivity a bit. And make sure that you are up to date on patches? The Albatros FM got an update a few weeks ago and most people say that the climbing tendencies have been reduced quite a bit. Let us know if we can help anymore...

Mission #5 Balloon defense!

Sounds like there should be some action, huh? I mean, who wouldn't want to send our juicy sausage down in flames right? Well, first of all, the front that was threatening yesterday showed up today, so the weather was miserable:

Nevertheless, the balloon needed defense, so off we went. At 11,000 feet we leveled off and headed southeast, skirting the front lines towards the Balloon about 15 miles north of Lille.

At about the halfway point, suddenly Oberflugmeister Knustler and his wingman dove away to the west. Thinking this might be a fight, I looked all around for some possible enemy scouts but saw nothing. By this time they had dove into a cloud and I could not find them. Not having anything better to do but still feeling saucy, I headed south towards the balloon. About 15 minutes later, I could see it below me. A single a/c was above it. Approaching cautiously, I was surprised to see it was Alex Kulbe, our high cover from Schwarm Eins. Amazingly, we arrived at the balloon at almost exactly the same time. I took up position on his wing and we circled above the drachen for about 20 minutes:

If there were any enemies in the area, we didn't see them and they apparently didn't see us. After burning some gas and making some pretty circles in the sky, we headed home, thoroughly soaked from the rain...

After 17 mins of flight I had a runtime error and game crashed. It does show up in my pilot dossier as a completed flight. This is the first time I have had this error. Do I refly a mission on this same day or advance it a day?

Yep. I suggest advancing one because it may be a mission error and if that's the case it will keep crashing until you do.

Burk Willitz' Mission #4

We receive orders for a patrol over the lines & hurry to get into the action..

That was some serious damage on my D.III controls.. dropped like a rock once I started to turn right and it rolled over permanently.

driving hahaha

NOTE:
I used the "Air Start" option to save the long initial climb to altitude, but I should've been more cautious knowing how the option occasionally spawns a sizable group of enemy planes directly overhead at the start with a big altitude advantage. Sure enough, seven SPADs were spawned about 500m over my little two-plane flight and the four friendlies flying top cover just kept on while we were pounced. I started recording a few seconds later, after they turned to dive on us. At first I thought they might continue on so I waited a bit.. but alas! There was no getting away although I tried to dive for home.

I've been wondering if this odd spawn situation is working as intended when using the "Air Start" option. When they spawn like this, they are always directly overhead and above, with a big advantage. I'll bring it up in another thread and see if it's WAI, because it just seems like a random punishment for using "Air Start" in it's current form.

For Those Of You Still Flying - Beware The Possible 'Air Start' Spawns!

My final outcomes:

I had actually been flying the Albatros quite a bit before this challenge. I like it after the fixes. A jack-of-all-trades and master of none. I've been wanting to do some more Allied campaigns lately, however, so I'm not terribly sad other than the poor showing I put on. Good luck guys! I expect to read some interesting hair-of-your-teeth stories and watch some great vids!

One thing seems rather strange to me. I have all settings set to historical including the weather but I don't remember one rainy day during my 8 missions with MFJ1. I see that Rick had some rainy day mission (June 5, is it?) and I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Do you also have historical weather Rick?

Nefaro, I'm very sorry for Burk, he was a very nice guy.
I'm trying to use Air Start sparingly, especially avoiding it in Airfield defense and Escort missions.
We scrambled on an airfield defense yesterday and took off only to find a squadron of Nieuport 23's recklessly attacking Aertrycke right behind our backs as we were taking off.
I wouldn't want to miss such fun because of air start on 2 km altitude.
Btw, the Nieuports were very stupid. There were 5 or 6 of them vs. 12 guys from MFJ1 (though they had advantage as we were still on the field) but I managed to take off safely and downed 3 of them in like 5 minutes.

Btw, the Nieuports were very stupid. There were 5 or 6 of them vs. 12 guys from MFJ1 (though they had advantage as we were still on the field) but I managed to take off safely and downed 3 of them in like 5 minutes.

I've generally been avoiding it in Escort missions but I didn't think about Airfield defense. I don't see them very often. I just had this feeling that I might get one of those big enemy spawns overhead the first time I used it this campaign and sure enough it did. Doah! I asked in Tech Support whether they'd look at that because I would expect them to spawn a distance off if they were to spawn at all upon entering the game.

I think my earlier MFJ1 mission, where some allied planes started above our field, was some kind of patrol over a different friendly field. But I may not be remembering that one correctly.

Either way, I recommend you guys avoid using the "Air Start" option because you can be ambushed from above when the sim starts. For this challenge, at least.

For me, in every flight sim I played in the last 25 years, a mission starts at take off (and from the parking/cold and dark when features available) and ends with a landing (and parking of the aircraft when feature available). The idea of an air start never crossed my mind.smile2
There are most of the time features like Quick Combat when I need to practice, or for a quick fix and don't have the time for a full mission.

More outstanding reports everyone, great reading and viewing. Please keep them coming.

Nefaro, sorry to hear your pilot bought it. We toast another brave comrade gone.

MFair, well done on becoming an ace Sir. Drinks are on you!

BTW everyone, three weeks and a day for this competition places the end date on 18 May, not 11 May.

OK, so here is the latest from my pilot. Karl Heusinger’s second mission was late in the afternoon of 4 June, was uneventful, and short due to a dud engine. 26 minutes after takeoff the young flieger was making a dead stick landing in the wheat field next to his flugplatz.

The following morning saw Schwarm Zwei climbing into a bright blue sky. Karl took up his assigned position as they patrolled south to Roubaix in search of any and all enemy flights.

A few kilometers SW of Kortrijk they found their prey, a full flight of Nieuport 23s well below them and up to no good. A long dive gave the Kaiser’s crew plenty of time to single out their respective targets.

Karl found what proved to be easy meat and the fight was over nearly as fast as it started.

The rest of his flight finished up their work, after which it was a rather leisurely flight home to Aertrycke where Karl put in a claim for his second victory. It was approved the next day.

The young flieger has been presented the silver cup and the EK2 and he will be celebrating at day's end.

cheers

Lou

Just to wet your appetite a bit and give a little incentive for staying alive. These are 2 prints from Russell Smith that I have. Hector and Achilles. It depicts The Baron and Lanoe Hawker in their duel to the death. My photography is squat, the prints are sharp as can be, but you get the idea.

Nice prints MFair!

Not much to report here ... two missions flown (doing one per day)and still alive. A few glimpses of the enemy but no major action so far.

I've been using Nvidia ShadowPlay beta, at someone's suggestion (Rick?). It has actually caused almost no loss of performance. The only time I notice a drop is when I tell it to start recording, then there's a hitch for about a second or less. The quality may not be top of the line, but it was free and doesn't drag my performance down so I've been happy.

I think it only works with the newest Nvidia cards, however.

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 3, 1917

This afternoon the weather really cleared up, no cloud is to be seen in the bright spring sky. I sit in the cockpit of my Albatros, with my leader Flugmeister Josua Paschke on my left, and my usual Rottenflieger Flugmaat Kaspar Winkler on my right. We are warming up the engines, together with the four pilots of Kette eins who will be our top cover. The mission for today is a patrol over enemy units at frontline sector FF3188, west of Menin. From there we will fly south over Roubaix and back to Aertrycke. After take off and forming up, we fly towards another Flugplatz west of Zedelgem, where we need to climb to 2800m. While we circle around 2000m, I notice a flight of 4 FE2bs coming straight on us, some 200m lower. They return from their mission heading west, and fly close by. My leader doesn't move and keeps climbing, and Kette eins behind us does the same. May be I was the only one seeing them, which I find hard to believe ! Anyway I'm not going to chase 4 FE2bs on my own...
We fly south west towards our first waypoint. Once we get there, instead of turning south to our patrol destination on the front lines, our leader keeps going straight to the front. I quickly spot flak bursts in front of us, still far away. They seem to come from the Drachen defense east of Diksmuide. This could well be the FE2bs again! As we close in I can confirm they are the FE2bs, already under attack of a few Albatros who were probably patrolling the front. As we come even closer and prepare to attack, we see the two last ones going down trailing a thick black smoke, and soon identify four Albatros from Jasta 20 who did the job.
Josua Paschke brings us back on our mission path. We fly high (4000m) over the british infantry units east of Ypres, then south to Roubaix without seeing any other contact. It's good for staying alive, but I will not become an ace without shooting !

* Technical notes:
As we came back overflying again the british units, I suffered a "hang up" of CFS3 (first time it happens) and had to kill the program with the task manager. This sent me back to the WOFF result screen saying " You landed behind enemy lines, but you managed to escape".. Phew, that could have been worse ! The game pushed me forward two days, so I will fly my mission n°4 on June 6th.

June 14th 1917

Another day another patrol a friendly airfield. Takeoff went without a hitch and we climbed to our patrol height without issues. We flew to our first waypoint and turned toward our target area.

Our flight path would take us over the lines at the bulge in the front around Ypres/Messines area. I just knew we would run into the enemy at some point, and I hoped I would fair better than I have in my last 4 missions. Just before we reached then lines our leader spotted a flight of 3 to 5 Camels over the line at a lower altitude. Seeing as we had 8 in B flight and another 7 in A flight just above and behind us I knew the signal would be given to attack. Instead our flight leader signaled to proceed to the nearest friendly airfield. We proceeded to Rumbeke field and landed without indecent. Now being only on my 5th mission with the squad I was a bit surprised we did not attack with the number advantage we had. I will give the leader the benefit of the doubt as to why we did not but surly if we are to win this war we need to be more aggressive in our missions! Or maybe a pilot of Jasta 4 owed him some money and he went to collect, I do not know. My personal stats as to date.

Cool. I just flew with seven other Albatrai as escort for a recon over Ypres. On completion I flipped the date to June 4 and got the newspaper article about the Germans sending artillery spotters over Messines Ridge with heavy fighter escort. I love it when stuff syncs up like that!

Thanks for the link elephant, good stuff. A beautiful painting, and what a grand prize. Thank you again MFair for providing it.

Karl Heusinger’s mission of 6 June 1917 took him and his flight down to Menen to keep watch over one of the Kaiser’s observation balloons there. HQ had received word there might be an attack launched on it, but either the information was wrong or the enemy made other plans and didn’t inform Schwarm Zwei. In either event it resulted in a very quiet morning’s hour of flying about and enjoying the view. Upon returning to the flugplatz the young pilot took his position in the landing order and was just about to settle onto the grass when squad mate “Rottenflieger” slammed into the portside wings of Karl’s mount and nearly ended him. But Gott war mit Flugmaat Heusinger and he managed to bring his busted kite to a stop, proper side up. His squad mate's plane was unscathed.

Karl sat in the cockpit for quite some time pondering the meaning of life and the strange humor of the universe. He then walked over to his attacker and punched him right in the mouth.

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 6, 1917 (Mission 4)

After a good Mittagessen, it is time for another mission. This is going to be a long one ! We are sent for a patrol over friendly lines, at Abschnitt FF4347, east of Armentières. From there we are to patrol all the way down to Lille and back to our Flugplatz. Although it is a patrol over friendly lines, our flight plan makes us cut straight through the Ypres salient inside enemy lines, which means we probably will have some company... I feel safer to know that although we are the only scheduled flight for this afternoon, we are eight planes under command of ObltzS Adolf Bottler, and that the seven other pilots are all officers and aces. The sky is still blue, but the clouds have returned in numbers, with big white cumulus between 1500 and 3000m. The light breeze from SSW will not be enough to blow them away, so it could be we will have to play hide and seek.
As usual we form up after take off, I am tail-end Charlie behind the forward wedge, tasked with looking after our six. After climbing around the clouds up to 3200m, we head for a long leg south west. We cross the frontline north of Ypres and fly south across enemy territory to rejoin our patrol waypoint. Time to keep your eyes open ! The front pilots start turning lightly right towards some little specks in front of us, same level. They are moving from left to right, and as we close on an intercept course I identify four enemy planes flying back from the front. They turn out to be Pups, and with eight against four I feel confident. If I avoid collisions, I might score my first victory, who knows ?
I remember I am the one looking for our six and give a last glance behind before jumping in the fight. I immediately feel the adrenaline shot and my heartbeat accelerates ! Is it luck that brought them or was it a deliberate "drag and bag" from our opponents ? Anyway here they are, four Nieuports 24 falling down on us. A fast situation analysis goes through my mind: we are now equal numbers with serious opponents, half of them have a good height advantage, we are over enemy territory, right in the middle of a big cloud patch. The answer comes as fast as the analysis : "Get the hell outta here !" Looking left towards our lines, I see a little hole between clouds, I cut the throttle and dive 1500m down to our lines, then ease up slowly so that the wings don't leave me. I am above our lines now, but another glance behind shows me one of the Nupes has followed. The usual dance starts, with him making fancy sharp turns and me the high yoyos to stay above. I manage to hit him a couple of times and suddenly he decides to turn around. He starts climbing in large circles and I simply can't follow him. Soon he is 200m above me and I let him fly away. I am alone now and decide to fly home.
As I close on Passchendaele, I see one of my Kameraden trying to land there is followed by another one of the Nupes and decide to give him a hand, although I'm not over confident with the Flak shooting from the Flugplatz. As soon as I score a hit, this Nupe pulls the same trick and climbs in large circles. I take a few pot shots at him as I am falling behind, but although I score a few lucky hits he gets away higher and higher. Nothing else to do than flying to Aertrycke. All in all, four of our planes landed here and there, four had to crash land in our lines but pilots are only lightly wounded. We claim three enemy planes.
Still no victory, but this time finally some action !

Great reports folks! I have just noticed that most, if not all, are not flying "Always Lead." I always do this even though not historically correct. If I need to be tail end Charlie I will be glad to scub my pilot to date and redo my 7 missions. May I have a consensus please good Sirs! Ain't this fun!

Lou! Rotten Flieger seems an appropriate title for him!

I don't blame him, but I would have made him pay for my rounds for the next month! biggrin

Glad he survived. It's bad enough out there with the enemy and the vagaries of mechanical things without having your mate almost end your career!

Karl sat in the cockpit for quite some time pondering the meaning of life and the strange humor of the universe. He then walked over to his attacker and punched him right in the mouth.

Hello Gents,

Martin Uberflieger is back with some highlights from his current career. First of all, he arrives to mission 5 with 4 claims, 2 of which are already confirmed. And this is very cool - considering fuel losses and fence contacts with no scratch.

It's morning, June 4, 1917 and we're heading South to rendezvous with several DFWs flying their Recce mission.
Shortly after we make contact with our brave 2-seaters we also notice flak bursts, same altitude, moving East to West - crossing the path of the DFWs moving South! Someone is surely trying to intercept them! Full throttle and we soon see 4 Tripes trying to attack and probably unaware of the escort. And that's where we come in. It was such fun! One of them almost immediately ran towards the front but I was firmly on his six closing in rapidly (am I correct that Alb III is faster than Tripe? or was this one damaged?).
Anyway, I got him with no problems, except we lost considerable amount of altitude in this chase. When I turned back East I noticed flaks high above and soon caught the sight of another Tripe circling not far (but higher) from me. I moved towards him and he started moving as well - I don't know why - to the North, right where Aertrycke was!

Well, I thought, I was going home anyway, so I'll just fly the same direction, gain some altitude and maybe get you eventually.

And so it was for some time - me, climbing vigorously, Tripe, heading North and performing anti-flak manoeuvres (or looking around). Now, what do you expect from a lonely Tripe flying on the German side of the lines and reaching some airfield (Aertrycke in this case)?? Sure, he started a Lone Wolf airfield attack!! Can you imagine?! And this is exactly where I got him. Bammm! Two Tripes in one mission.

This is how I get two confirmed kills (two DH5s from mission 1) and now two other claims. And I'm still alive!

P.S. And an Iron Cross! But what about the Cup? I didn't get it because there were 2 first kills not 1. Does it mean minus 3 points for me?

Congrats on the mission!

I would think that everyone with at least one kill should be able to count the 3 points for the Cup award since it's just a programming oversight that we don't get them when more than one kill is confirmed at the same time.

Right guys?

It's fine either way, I don't think it makes much of a difference. I like to just tag along and whatever happens happens, but you can always lead too!

My own opinion is that we stick to awarding points for medals per Rick's first post ... cups aren't medals in my mind. We already get a point per kill, so giving an extra three points just because a cup was associated with that kill seems a bit much. If the cup awards are not working right, that seems another good reason to skip the whole cup thing.

Others may think differently, and I'll happily go along with whatever popular consensus is.

Good show Rover, great pics. Thanks Rick. Yes, even though I am the "leader" I have yet to have them follow my orders to attack a particular craft, and sometimes I have dove in to attack only to find my flight have turned away. I think they were saying something to the effect of "let the young whipper snapper chase kills and medals, he won't be around long!"

I'd agree with 77Scout- just keep the scoring system RR came up with originally. No sense changing course after we've started, at least to my way of thinking anyway. Surviving is my priority after the EIII challenge, so medals and cups, champagne and frauleins...well that's already gravy. Survive your time, all the rest is gravy.

We could have a separate generic thread for people to offer up ideas on points values and ideas for scoring etc that those who would propose to make a challenge could draw ideas from? Just an idea

Dave

If you didn't notice yet, this was possible in OFF, but WOFF works the other way around. When you designate a plane as target on the TAC and give your guys the "Attack" order, you tell them to attack the other planes of this group. Same with ground attacks.

The Cup award, for the first aircraft you shoot down, could be considered a bug. So that's why the exception should be made.. some people will not get them if they get more than 1 claim affirmed at a time. So while they should've been awarded to them, they are not at the moment.

Wouldn't be quite fair if some missed out on the scoring due to a bug, right?

This.

It's actually quite nice.. you don't have to switch targets to specify and most of them leaves your currently selected target for you.

For the sake of consistency, I suggest that we all count the extra three points for our first kills, cup or not, or nobody counts the points for the cup. I don't really care one way or the other, as long as it affects us all the same. Also, a question on the mission count - three weeks of competition at seven missions per week would give us 21 missions at the end, but some are referring to a 23 mission total? Am I missing something here? For that matter, why not make it an even 25 mission cutoff? Just suggestions, I probably won't live that long anyway!

I just figured the 'cup' was a momento, rather than an award (medal) per se. Whatever-- I'm only one voice lol.

Kind regards,

Alright, here are my draconian rulings:
1. 25 is not an even number rofl
2. Sorry about #1, just had to get that (w)off my chest!
3. We are running the challenge for 23 days, so 23 missions it shalleth be!
4. Based upon this completely random google source:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=185634
an Ehrenbecher is more of an award, not a medal so do not count them!

So be-ith it!

Mohr Fahnn Mission #6

Ok, with the weather all cleared up, I was ready fur sum shootin'. Schwarm Zwei was tasked with a friendly lines patrol up by the North Sea. As we were taking off, there were several black puffs of smoke to the east. Within moments, we were attacked by 3 SPADs. As the odds were 6v3 in our favor, I thought this would be just the fight we were spoiling for. Hanging back so not to get in the near-miss turns of the last dogfight I had, I waited and swooped down on their last a/c as he tried to attack my wingmen. I got some shots in on the first pass:

I then settled behind him as he climbed away taking several more shots at him:

Unfortunately, he kicked that Hispano-Suiza in the teeth and away they went, headed for the front...

I followed for a while but had to give up when it was obvious the chase wasn't going to net some prey. By this time, my flight was scattered. Still full of beans and with plenty of gas, I headed north along the patrol route. After sweeping back and forth a few times I reluctantly headed home. As I was about to start my approach, I noticed several smoke puffs above me to the north. I saw a dark craft up there headed east, so I moved to intercept. A few moments later, I was clearing my six when a puff of smoke appeared over my right shoulder. My prey's wingman had come down to champion him. Now I had him right where I wanted him:

Fortunately, he overshot his dive and I was able to come around on him, peppering him with machine gun fire when I could:

As he twisted and turned to get away from me, the struggle was more than his poor Airco could stand:

Now satisfied, I landed near his still smoldering wreck. It wasn't all good news, however. The rest of our schwarm had shot down one of the SPADs, but unfortunately, Vizeflugmeister Mohlo won't be returning. The empty chair is a poignant reminder of the stakes at hand...

Good going Rick. Yep, those Spads can take a beating and still go, but a kill is a kill! I can't wait for Saturday to climb back in my Alb and get back in the fight. Since becoming an ace I was invited to the Estate of von Richthofen for a week of hunting and relaxation. I plan on picking his brain for some pointers while here.

Shortly after 6:00 on the morning of June 7 Schwarm Zwei of MFJ 1 was warming up on the grass at Aertrycke, preparing to take to the skies on a patrol of their lines down to Messines. Flugmaat Karl Heusinger was last in line and watched as his flight lifted, one by one, into the clean dawn air.

The flight was quiet and uneventful until the group was nearing St. Julien. It was here that Karl spotted AA bursts near the factory below. He peered over the edge of his cockpit and after a fair amount of hunting about at last spotted a lone plane loitering over the factory. He caught up with his schwarm leader and singled what he had found but got nothing more than a shoulder shrug and a thumbs up which Karl decided meant he could dive down and have a go. No one else followed along as he made his dive and the young flieger was hoping it was only the one enemy he'd spotted and not others he may have missed. Luck was on his side and the plane in questioned turned out to be a lone Sopwith two-seater. Further good luck when it appeared the pair working in the bus had not spotted Karl dropping down on them. Flugmaat Heusinger slipped in behind his prey and closed the gap.

Two bursts from his twin Spandaus and the enemy plane rolled over and crashed into a wheat field near the factory, and flipped over as it came to a stop.

Karl circled once but saw no movement from the bus, so he noted it position for his claims report and climbed back up to rejoin his flight. The remainder of the patrol was quiet and Schwarm Zwei returned to the flugplatz an hour after taking off. Karl made his report, turned in his claim, and grabbed a victor's breakfast of eggs, toast, and coffee. It was a good morning.

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 7, 1917 (Mission 5)

I am again in the afternoon flight, this time Schwarm zwei counts 6 planes under command of ObltzS Erich Weidenheimer. Schwarm eins with 5 planes will be led by ObltzS Paul Kunstler and will fly behind us. My trusty Rottenflieger Flugmaat Kaspar Winkler is again flying on my side. Weather is still bright and sunny, with scattered clouds around 2000m. We are sent to patrol our lines at Abschnitt FF8167, northwest from Menen. We take off and climb over Varsenaere Flugplatz. Once again, as we climb, a couple of Morane Ls fly right by us and nobody reacts... We reach 2800m, above the clouds, before heading towards the frontline. I am on the right of the front wedge, my Rottenflieger is trailing behind us. Bad luck for the two Moranes, we catch up with them near our Dixmuide Drachen, before they can cross the lines. As we are six planes, I fear collisions in such a situation and prefer to play watchdog above the fight. Both Moranes are promptly dispatched and burn down to the no man's land. Poor guys ! Their observers however did hit two of our planes, among which our leader. They break away and fly back to Aertrycke. The four remaining Albatros form up on "Onkel Theo" Osterkamp. In the meantime we have lost contact with Schwarm eins as they continued straight on the mission flight plan.
As we near Passchendaele, we spot many black Flak puffs and soon are chasing five unescorted FE2bs, probably on a bombing mission inside our territory. We quickly close in and attack from under their line of sight. I choose the one on the right and hit him with a couple of bursts. I split right and by the time I make a circle to come back and finish the job, someone else has done it. In a couple of minutes the five bombers are down, cut in pieces burning down to the ground. We form up again and head to our patrol destination. We spot four planes of Schwarm eins flying above us on the way back to Aertrycke. One is missing !
We will not see any other enemy aircraft and we fly back to the Flugplatz as Schwarm eins is already in the landing pattern. Some traffic then, but everyone will land safely one after the other.
That makes seven claims for Schwarm zwei (unfortunately none for me). Our two planes hit by the Moranes will need two and three days of repair. Schwarm eins did not fight. Oberflugmeister Alex Hube had a mechanical failure and a fuel leak, and needed to land in the countryside. As the plane came to a stop, the fuel drops on the hot exhaust started a fire and he barely had time to jump and run away. He ended up with light burns when his plane was totally destroyed.

An other patrol friendly airfield at Varsenaere. Flights consisted of 4 in A and 4 in B which I was apart of. When we reached our patrol area and height we came out of a cloud to find a flight of 4 N24's above us about 800 yards. We did not nor did they attack immediately. I think neither of the flight leaders saw each other. When they did the N24's began to dive down on us as we tried to gain altitude on them. Our formation quickly broke up as I think the leader signaled to head home. I found two N24's on my tail and I went totally defensive in nature. When all of a sudden I saw A flight just above and to my left heading my way. I turned toward them hoping for help in pulling the two 24's off of me. They proceeded to fly right by me less than 600 yards away and kept going like they where the only planes in the sky! When they get back to the field I have a mind to walk up to each pilots of A flight and thank them for the help by punching them right square in the nose! So with 2 N24's still on my tail I twisted and turned my DIII as much as I could. I got hit in the left wing and the motor started to lose power! I thought I was done for when both N24's broke off their attack and headed back toward the lines. I then made a dash for home and as I touched wheel to dirt my motor came to a stop. I am lucky to have survived this day! I am heading to the officers club for a stiff drink!

We regret to inform you that Baron von Muttley was lost today in action against the enemy. His flight engaged a flight of 5 SE5's. Reports are he was the only member of his squad to attack the enemy planes while defending a flight of 2 Rumpler C.IV's.

Good luck to the rest of you all!

Waoh! Tough luck Leadtail, especially after such a close call on your last mission. That is a lonely feeling to go after the enemy and find you are deserted and all by your lonesome. Tommorrow, we may fall!

Gunter Schlick has finally entered the fray.

Mission #1 - June 1, 1917:
We take off in the morning with five aircraft to patrol friendly lines near Passchendaele. We formed up, climbed to altitude and set out for the lines. No other aircraft in sight. We complete our patrol without encountering the enemy and turn for home.

Just then my wingman breaks formation back towards the front and I follow him. Down below just behind our lines I spot flak bursts around two aircraft climbing towards us. As we get closer I identify them as Sopwith Triplanes. My wingman takes one and I take the other. The Englishman is pretty good, but for a moment I have a shot at his tail with no deflection. As I am almost lined up and about to fire, the sun (the real sun) comes out from behind a cloud and shines into the window behind my chair, causing interference for my TrackIR and sending my view panning and snapping wildly around. I lose the triplane and become disoriented and end up getting my kite into a spin. Quick pause to close the shutters and get TrackIR reset and back to the sim.

I recover from the spin and try to find the tripe. His bullets find me first and my plane is hit multiple times and I take a bullet myself as well. I break hard right and dive for a road below me. The triplane follows for a minute but can't keep pace and turns for home. I manage to set the plane down on the road and pray help arrives before I bleed out.

I am rescued by some nearby soldiers and spend the next ten days recovering in the hospital glad to be alive. My wingman was more fortunate in his dual, but didn't get his tripe either. I think I would have gotten mine but for the TrackIR issue, but c'est la guerre!

Been there...Done that...Many times. I just recently added a cardboard box set of blinders around my TrackIR so the sunlight and reflections can't hit it. I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!! nope

Rick Rawlings;

I know you have a "Hard Date" of May 11th for the closing of this challenge.
I need to finish Horst Spieler's career prior to May 9th as he and the wife and I will be in the Azores relaxing. That is...if he lives that long! Do you have any concerns with my advancing his career prior to May 9th?

Best Regards;

Hello Gents,

Martin Uberflieger here, reporting current progress before going to 4-day Russian holidays in real world.

Things are going well and I have some kind of lucky number 8-8-8 that I wanted to share.
I'm still alive and I must admit that this contest brings the best experience I've ever had in WOFF. I couldn't imagine the limits of joy and immersion I already experienced flying could be expanded even more. Seems like I'm actually reliving every mission as my pilot.

Thank you Rick and all participants. I really hope this tradition will carry on.

Good flying Rover! I have had the same feeling flying in these 2 Campaign's. It does add to the total experience. Keep up the flying and I hope your luck holds out.

8 kills and only the 2nd Klasse! That is a surprise. I have 6 kills and I'm in the same boat. It will be interesting how long it will take to be recognized.

Leadtail, sorry to learn of the loss of your pilot. Another brave soul flies with the angels.

Robert, I am sure it will be fine if you fly the remainder of your 23 missions before you have to leave on your vacation, (lucky bugger). Also, loving the video reports.

Rover, I also find it odd that your flieger has only the EK2 with 8 victories to his credit. He must have really gotten on the wrong side of someone at HQ.

Excellent reports all, they are great reads as I enjoy my morning coffee.

To that end, for others who enjoy these with their morning coffee, here is Karl's latest adventure:

8 June 1917, another beautiful morning in Flanders. During the rushed briefing of the dawn mission Flugmaat Heusinger was informed his previous day’s claim for the Sopwith two-seater had been confirmed, giving him three official victories. A cheer rose up from his squad mates as they hurried onto the field and to their waiting kites. Time was of the essence as an inbound flight of enemy planes had been reported by a front line spotting station east of Nieuport. Scant minutes later Karl was following his flight leader as Schwarm Zwei took off to battle the incoming threat that appeared intent on doing damage to their home flugplatz at Aertrycke.

The DIIIs climbed to meet their attackers who were having to contend with the worst that the Kaiser’s ground gunners had to offer.

As the flight drew nearer Karl noticed one of the enemy buses was already trailing black smoke from the AA’s handiwork. He chose this injured two-seater as his target and made best speed to intercept it.

Flugmaat Heusinger guided his mount carefully up and directly below the crippled British plane and at the last moment popped up onto the enemy’s six and let loose with a deadly burst.

His target fell immediately into a spin and never recovered. The rest of Karl’s flight made equally quick work of the remaining EA, after which they began to climb back up into the clouds to continue their patrol. Karl no sooner reached the bottom of the cloud deck when he was hit by gun fire! He twisted his mount hard to port and dove away, and looked back to try and determine where his attacker had come from. All he caught, apart from a bullet, was a glimpse of what appeared to be an enemy dridekker zooming back up into the shroud above. Karl was acutely aware of a pain in his right side as he continued his dive to Aertrycke, landing at the flugpatz immediately. He never saw the ‘ghost’ after the initial attack, however the wound below his right shoulder was painful proof it had surely happened. The lucky young flieger was promptly treated for his injuries and sent away for a week’s recovery at the hospital in Brugge. He submitted his claim for the enemy two-seater from his hospital bed while a comely nurse brought him a pitcher of cool water and asked if he needed an extra pillow. Perhaps this wouldn’t be such a bad recovery at all.

Lou;

Your reports are always top class thumbsup

I suspect most of us are so busy flying missions and preparing reports that we hardly have time to comment or read other reports. It generally takes me 3 hours to fly a mission, edit and trim the video, prepare the written report, upload the video to youtube, and post report and video to the forum! Whew!! And I try to do two missions a day before May 9th!! sigh

Notes of Flugmaat Hermann Schuster - Aertrycke Flugplatz - June 8, 1917 (Mission 6)

Mission today was a complete flop... Just before 12:00, as we were looking forward to a good meal in the mess, an urgent call sent us running to our planes. There was a warning that the Brits were planning a raid on Harlebeke airfield, some 40km south east of us, across the Lys river, and they were sending us to intercept. We took off in a hurry with every plane we had ready, and formed up in two groups of six. I was in Schwarm zwei with Kaspar Winkler, and Schwarm eins was following us. We got there as fast as we could, but as we arrived some 3500m above the Flugplatz, we didn't see any plane in the air, and no Flak was shooting. Our leader ObltsZ Bertram Heinrich began flying large circles above the town of Harlebeke. Schwarm eins was following us. May be the sight of our twelve planes in the sky made the british planes turn around ? May be we had received a wrong information and they were somewhere else ? Or may be they were since a long time back at their airfield having lunch and a good laugh at the joke they pulled on us ? Anyway after some 20 minutes of circling, our leader called it a day and we headed back to Aertrycke.
As we were flying by Roulers, I suddenly saw the needle drop on my tachometer and heard my engine making weird sounds now and then. A quick look at the fuel gauge told me I still had more than enough. I could decide either to land at Passchendaele which was not far away on our left or try to make it to Aertrycke. We were high (near 4000m) and the engine problem didn't sound too bad. I reduced throttle, left the Schwarm and started slowly going down. Even if the engine let me down at some point, I estimated I could glide down and still land at Aertrycke. In fact, despite the strange noises, my engine held all the way to the airfield. I landed and parked near the last tent, then watched all the other planes land.
The good news were that everyone made it back. The bad news were that our lunch was cold... The mechanics had a look at my engine and told me my plane wouldn't fly for the next 48 hours. One of those days ...

Hi Robert,

Sorry for the late reply.

I like the idea of everybody staying close to each other in mission count because for me that adds to the interest of seeing other fliers at about the same point in the career and how their luck or lack of it compares to mine. Perhaps in future challenges, we can have Competetive Fliers and Non-Competitive Fliers (C.F.s and N.C.F.s) for those who won't be able to fully complete the guidelines for whatever reason.

Having said that blanket statement, you:
A) Warned us that this was going to happen before we even started and
B) Were operating under my inability to type part of a long post at one location and part of it at another location and still make sure I changed my dates consistently throughout.
So I think it is fine to go ahead and finish up. But no one else!! Unless you are also going on an awesome vacation biggrin

On a side note, I was able to sit down and watch some of your videos last night. I have this feature where I can stream youtube on my TV and it looks really cool. I loved watching them. I was especially envious of your head tracking stability when you zoomed waaaaaaaay in on your aerodrome in one of them. Gonna have to play with FaceTrack some more to see if I can settle it down a bit.

I got the Iron Cross 2 after my two first kills were confirmed and after that no medals came my way. Maybe it's because I get kills in couples and triples (e.g., in mission 8). Maybe some bug. I don't mind it actually. I'm driven by Revenge and Survival!

I don't mind it either. It's just my inquisitive mind trying to make some sense of it and understand the medal allocatio system.

Today, after applying the 1.25 patch (don't know if it's related) I was on June 9 in game and the frequency of operations for MFJ1 which had been high until now changed to low.
I didn't notice it at first sight. The morning mission was a balloon busting with 12 planes. I wasn't so interested so I decided to try my luck with the afternoon mission. I was surprised to be pushed to next morning !

1. Did other players also have this change from high to low frequency on June 9 ?
2. I apologize for having unvolunteerely broken the rules by skipping one day, until now I always had two missions a day.

My mission n° 7 was flown on June 10 instead of June 9.

Ok flyers, I have my oil stained hands on one beautiful Russell Smith print. Make sure all your ammo is good, your engine is running smooth and you have your eyes pealed. You really do want this print!

On a side note, IF by chance I am lucky enough to come out on top, which is unlikely with so many good flyers, the print will go to #2. Have fun guys, this is a kick in the pants!

Actually, you are only supposed to have one mission per day:

so your timeline actually looks close enough for me. How are you skipping the morning mission? Time advance? I just have my mission frequency set to "low" and fly everyone which comes my way, which has been one per day.

At any rate, you look fine!

Until today for me (June 9), the frequency of operations was "high" and there was one morning and one afternoon mission every day. I advanced from morning to afternoon with time advance.
Anyway I'm only flying this campaign for the fun and thrill, and more in my usual "survival mode" than looking at it as a competition. smile2

Edit : I was only flying one mission per day, but the game generated one morning mission and one afternoon mission. This is why I was usually flying the afternoon mission, knowing the next one would be next day.

It started out for me with two missions a day, one morning, and one afternoon and I always skipped the afternoon by advancing to next day. Somewhere along the way something must have changed or the AI are intuitive and have noted I was skipping missions and so now I only get the morning mission and get advanced to next day automatically.

Not sure why this is happening since I haven't touched the workshop settings.

Frequency of operations will change automatically if you're using historical settings depending on the date and squadron. MFJ1 appears to be set to go from high to low somewhere in early June.
