I picked this up today, a nice little ERMA DSM-34 Mauser action training rifle. I've been looking for a cool little 22LR rifle of this type. I have a thing for Mausers. This makes the third of the type that I have bought. I have a K98K RC and an ancient Model 1871 Cavalry Carbine that is mostly used as a wall hanger.
For those that aren't familiar with these little single shot rifles were built in Germany prior to WW2. The Versailles Treaty banned Germany from making more than a smattering of combat rifles. When Hitler and the Nazis came to power they wanted to start rearming but in 1933 they had to be discreet about it. The 22LR rifles produced prior to Hitler's rise to power were fine but the leadership wanted a 22LR rifle that closely mimicked the K98K that was starting to be produced.
So they made the DSM-34 rifle. It was designed to look and feel much like the K98K while being lighter and cheaper to build and use. It was heavily used by the Hitler Youth prior to the war to familiarize the boys with the Mauser action. The weapon was lighter than a K98K and ammo was obviously cheaper.
I can't wait to take it to the range.
