I noticed Steam has Hearts of Iron 2 on sale. Anyone willing to share their thoughts? I vaguely recall playing Hearts of Iron 1, and it was a very overwhelming game, with a horrible UI, was the second one any better?

All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!

I just couldn't get into the first game after trying several times. Something about looking at a map and never any action just leaves me flat. It may be great for someone really into strategy though. I have no interest in the second game.

HOI2 was better and is the best one in my opinion. It has the control of the first one but with a better UI and some streamlined functions. We played a multiplayer campaign as Germany, Italy and Soviet Union. It was horribly boring during 1936 when Italy has stuff to do in Africa but we got to 41 with the Soviets attacking Germany. Italy was neutral and when the Soviet assault ground to a halt in Yugoslavia, Italy were feeding intelligence back to me (as Germany) for a little bit of cheap trade. Based on this information I could do a pincer move and trapped several armies. The Soviet Union then gave up and that was three months of Wednesday night gaming ended.

So if you didn't like HOI1 I don't think you'll like the second. I have HOI3 but could not get into that at all. I fail to grasp the mechanics and end up just looking at the game as it plays itself. I really like the grand campaign and the control you have in HOI2 though. Perhaps you can try to play some of the smaller scenarios like North Africa?

There is a HOI4 coming out next year and it will have a more friendly learning curve.

I thought the game itself was interesting, just couldn't stand the UI. That and I was in my early 20's when it came out, just didn't have the attention span needed for it wink. If the second one is a big improvement, I may give it a shot. It's only 7 bucks...
