Does anyone have a recommendation for a good guide on how to create missions in FSX? It's ironic that I can script a full blown combat theater in DCS to my hearts content with the built in tools, but FSX? Not so much.

Not trying to be a smart azz but i Googled it and found a tutorial from Microsoft.

Probably a few better ones out there and a descriptive tutorial on YouTube i bet.

The articles that Storm linked are good. I've got them printed out and in a mission development folder.

Here is a youtube channel that will get you going. The resolution is poor, but they are good tutorials.
Somewhere around here I've got an old e-mail that I sent out to a few folks with several links and instructions. I will try to find that and post it here later today.

How about trying Simdirector in Prepar3d? Apparently it is a pretty powerful mission editor.

FSX Mission editor is pretty good. I use it too, but you still have to know how to use the OPT.

There are more videos (from this series -- and others) on youtube.

It's o.k. to install on your current machine, just not ideal.
Consider developing on a different computer. This helps if your doing multiplayer mission development.

Finally, here are a few tips:
After you've gone through making a mission above and you're ready to start with a Multiplayer mission, start with one the fsx included missions. Just copy that to a new directory, assign a new GUID to that mission, change the name and start editing!

When you actually place objects, go into the outside->top down view mode -- otherwise you will have imprecise object placement. I learned this through trial and error.
Set your water detail to low while using the OPT -- this is also know to create object placement error. Error, in these two circumstances means unwanted offset -- you will not see an error window.
