Hello again,

I'm trying to get my Hurri MkI engine to start. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. My checklist is:

Magnetos 1 and 2 on.

Radiator closed

Fuel cock fully open on 'reserve'.

Prop pitch set to 'fine'.

Mixture on 'rich'.

Throttle on 10%

Hit 'I'.

The prop starts up, then splutters to a halt.

What am I doing wrong?

Is the fuel cock supposed to be at the 12.00 or 3.00 position?

By mixture on 'rich' does this mean that the 'M' red button is at the top of the slider?

OK. Kind of a conversation with myself here but I think mix slider needs to be 'down' to be full rich?

Also I seem to be able to start this easier with fuel cock on '12.00' position. I watched tutorial on Youtube but I think it's an old one and things may have changed.

I have FFB on my stick and the engine seems to rev violently at low revolutions.

My problem now is getting off the ground in one piece. Despite trimming the rudder and giving much right rudder the Hurricane seems to want to go around in circles. What's the trick to this?

Thankyou for your patience.

You can give a bit of throttle (10% or so) Leave the slider on rich, fuel on main tank (first position).
Don't rev the engine until the water temp show 40s degrees on the gauge.
Take off needs practise, you might need to use your aelerons as well as the rudder to keep straight.
Do you have the latest TF patch installed (4.312)?
ATAG forum is the best place to get advice on all things CoD these days.

Opera resume: Open fuel cock, hit "I" - the plane spawn with other items on convenient position.

YT tutorials for CloD only worth if are done after December 2012.

For takeoff release brakes - plane spawn with brakes on - and remove wheels chock if you command put then, throttle up slowly and anticipate right deviation with rudder. Flaps on ~28º help.

Basic takeoff procedure for Hurricane I (ROTAL 100oct);

Chocks in (Alt-b)
Open canopy
Fuel cock on main
Radiator closed (blue marker on screen in down position)
Mixture on auto-rich (full down- you really don't need to touch this-ever)
Prop full fine (marker full up)
Advance throttle about 5%
Start engine (I)
Oil temp gauge needs to reach 40C, water temp 60C before takeoff. While you are waiting for the temps to rise, you can turn on and adjust your gunsight, set cockpit lighting, set compass, test control surfaces, and set flaps (10-20% for takeoff) etc.
Once your temps reach their proper settings OPEN the radiator! Otherwise you will soon be looking through a haze of oil.

Chocks away (Alt-b again)
Add a few clicks of right rudder trim if so desired- this does not need to be fully trimmed to the right.
Advance throttle smoothly, with forward stick pressure. Be prepared to make very small rudder adjustments back and forth to keep her pointed straight.
Once the tail starts to rise, neutralise stick input.
At about 80-90 MPH indicated, pull back gently and smooothly on stick. DO NOT roll faster than this on non-paved runways- you will blow a tire and crash.

Once airborne, retract landing gear, retract flaps, close canopy and immediately reduce throttle to no higher than 6lbs boost (top edge of red boost indicator). Then reduce prop pitch to no more than 2700 RPM (the ROTAL is a constant speed prop- so you are actually setting RPMs rather than pitch with it. Set the RPMs, the pitch will adjust itself for you automatically).
Keep in level flight until you are showing about 170-180 MPH indicated. This is a very good speed to maintain while climbing. Set you rudder and aileron trim for climb at about this airspeed.
Once you oil temp drops to about 90C, you can close the radiator slightly, but you need to keep checking the oil temp from time to time-don't let it stay above 90C.
