Salute!

While I realize that I'm flying this sim on a "dinosaur computer" by today's standards, it still looks great and runs smoothly on MEDIUM settings...but I did decide to bite the bullet and upgrade my old TrackIR-3 Pro to the latest and greatest TrackIR-5 with their "Clip-Pro" attachment (or whatever that thing-a-majig is called that now protrudes from my headset LOL).

All I can say is...WOW...what a magnificent difference! thumbsup

Good to know. I'm still rocking my Track IR 3 Pro. I think I will until it breaks. Does it still work with the clip from the TIR 3 Pro? I don't wear a headset...

Is the clip that you're talking about the one that clips onto a baseball-cap visor? If so, then it should work, since the TrackIR-5 Pro comes with one of those at no additional charge. Believe it or not, I never had one of those for my TrackIR-3. I was putting their little silver stickers onto the end of my headset's speaker arm for tracking purposes which actually worked OK until just recently when it became erratic.

The "Clip Pro" is something you pay extra for (NaturalPoint has a bundled package that includes it) but it's pretty nice. It clips onto your headset (so, yes, you would need a headset) and then connects to the TrackIR via USB (but they've designed it so that the TrackIR only takes up one USB port on your computer).

If you've never tried flying with a headset, you should try it. I started doing it several years ago and have never flown without them since. I find it to be much more immersive...like you're in the cockpit.

P.S. Perhaps the best thing about the TrackIR-5 and RoF is the "six degrees of freedom" (i.e., the ability to lean forward in the cockpit or lean left and right out of the cockpit). Takes the immersion to a whole new level. I can now lean forward into my gunsight for better aiming, just the way pilots probably did in real life.

Ah, with the baseball clip I have for my TIR 3 Pro I've always had 6DOF. I do love leaning in to the sights or to look around the nose. I also find in ROF if I duck down before crashing I have a higher survival rate. biggrin

Dumbo,

That is interesting to hear. Was it the clip-pro that made the difference or the unit itself. I have a Track IR3 Pro and I have often asked is there any real noticeable difference with the Track IR5. I have people quote stats about the 5 but they never really say that in day to day use it is any better. I have also had people tell me that they really do not see a difference in the use of the TIR 5. I would upgrade in a heart beat if I felt I would really gain anything (I love the technology). My 3 still works well so is there anything definitive that you have noticed about the 5 that your 3 was not providing?

Thanks

The 5 allows the player a wider field of view. Meaning the area that the tracking camera sees is somewhat larger.

Ricob,

For starters, let me say that my old TrackIR-3 had been "going on the fritz" for awhile until it finally died. My first problem was the computer not recognizing the TrackIR device if I hadn't flown in awhile, forcing me to crawl beneath my desk and unplug my TrackIR from its USB port and then re-plug it in to get it working again. A real pain, yes, but then I upgraded my monitor to a 24" flat screen that had extra USB ports on the side...so at least I didn't have to crawl beneath my desk anymore LOL! That alone extended the life of my TrackIR-3 at least another two years.

However, over the past six months, it finally got to the point where I just couldn't maintain any kind of a smooth head flow in-game. It would jerk all over the place and freeze up to the point that I wasn't even able to fly anymore.

I never had 6DOF with my TrackIR-3 and had been using NaturalPoint's old silver stickers pasted around the end of my headset's mouthpiece for tracking purposes. I never even had the baseball-cap clip attachment that everybody else seems to have.

So I guess a short answer to your question is that, for me it least given my circumstances, it has been a HUGE upgrade. And I finally get to enjoy 6DOF, which is a definite plus.

But if you are thinking about it, treat yourself to NaturalPoint's bundled package which includes the Clip-Pro device. The TrackIR-5 itself only takes up a single USB port (on the side of my 24" monitor); the Clip-Pro attaches to my headset (only while flying, so it's easily removable and set aside) and connects electronically to the TrackIR-5 through an extra USB port that the TrackIR-5 has dangling from its single connection into my monitor. Make sense? I've gotta believe that this electronic connection gives you a much more stable "flow" than the little silver stickers on the hat clip--otherwise why pay extra for it?

The only electronic "connection" it is using is pulling the 5V power from USB to light the LEDs. There is no data flowing from the headset to the TrackIR. The main feature it may provide over Vector Hat Clip is better performance in a bright room. I ended up sticking with my TIR3 and vector hat clip, as I didn't find any advantage with the headset clip, but that is purely personal preference.
