I'm a big fan of this Youtube channel, but this video almost made me want to cry.

nope biggrin

I got a smirk when I asked a guy at best buys if he could get me a cassette deck for my truck. It'd be fun to watch them with a record player. biggrin

What's funny is that the kids mentioned walkie talkies and boom boxes. Those things are just as outdated as Walkmans.

A couple of those kids were pretty smart!
Reminds me of many years ago when my mother took a picture of my son and niece with a film camera. They didn't understand why there was no review picture on a screen on the back of the camera. LOL
Even Advantix cameras weren't the big new thing for long.

Kids do still play with walkie talkies though, I'm glad to say. Much better ones though!
And then they want phones.

Around 1970, the lightweight Sennheiser headphones were
out, and cassettes had been around for three or four years.
Players (which were all recorders, as well) were still
about 2x6x11", and the D cells took up a fair amount of
that space. But Sony put out its first stereo portable
cassette recorder in that format, about that year, maybe
'71. It looked slightly bigger and fancier than the usual
mono ones. And for stereo, it included a headphone jack,
as well as the usual mono speaker. Looked kinda like this,
but somewhat slicker, as I think that is a later model, and
I think "Superscope" was Sony's budget brand, while this one
was top of the line, being the newest thing:

http://www.derekspratt.com/Images/Audio/SuperScope%20CS200S%20Cassette%20Deck.jpg

So, you could put your cassette deck into a backpack,
with the headphones plugged in, and walk around listening
to the Moody Blues new album, on a sunny afternoon in the
park, almost a decade before the "Walkman" came out. It
was a completely novel experience at the time. A bunch of
us kids put this together, one had the phones, another the
deck, and we took turns using the device, as it was in
high demand, being an utterly novel experience for the
time.

So it was kinda cool, when the walkmen came out, to be
able to say, Hah, we've been doing that fer years.

Seems exactly the walkman I had except that the play buttons on mine weren't plastic(silver metal instead). Samirah is knowledgeable, at that age I don't remember being well informed about obsolete technology. Maxim is... dangerous. Keep an eye on that one.

I still have the walkman that my grandparents gave to me in 1986.

Still works fine.

What makes me feel old is seeing some hot teenage thing walk by and the only thing that pops into my head is,

"I wonder if she would like to meet my son."

That makes me feel old.

Archie, I remember having a converter for the 8 track player in my old El Camino.

I'm surprised they didn't spot the headphone jack.

Yep, I pick up my son at High School and I see a bunch of kids - just kids.

On the video, I guess these kids don't have iPods, which require a headphone/ear buds to listen to.

8-track to cassette converter? Fancy. My first car had an FM radio converter that one tuned into via the AM radio.

I don't know... I doesn't make me feel old... Part of me thinks those kids are funny and cute, another part of me thinks they are stupid. How could a walkman be complicated?! Three buttons, play/stop, pause, and fast forward. That's all.

To be honest I don't know how I feel. Also in another video they don't know about the busy tone on a phone!? That's it, I'm going for "stupid".

When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

Actually, with its recent revival it's more likely they'd have seen a vinyl album and player than a cassette deck, even though LPs were mostly dead when they were born and tapes were still quite popular till about 10 years ago.

Wanna blow them away, use a reel-to-reel tape player. My uncle had one of those, talk about bulky!

My nephew the other day was fascinated by the manual window crank in my truck. Not it a big deal but kind of surprised and tickled me that a little guy his age is mostly surrounded by electronic buttons to roll windows down and lock doors.
