Just curious. What exactly is the point of these 'Push button to begin' screens in games?

It makes sense on an old arcade machine but why do modern PC and console games still feature these? Nostalgia or is there a legitimate programming reason?

so you can wait for the game to load completely and not start before you are ready for it to start??

Console ports have this feature. The developers just don't bother to remove it for the PC version. It's like those games that say "please do not power off while save is in progress".

If it is a long load time then it is needed because sometimes people get up and go to the bathroom or something and in a lot of these games it starts with important info or action you need to be there for.

I dont think it is a console feature other than maybe "x" instead of hit enter. It used to be a very popular thing to put in games in the 90s but for whatever reason a lot of places stopped doing it which is sad.

I often leave the PC during loading. It's nice to have the intro/presentation wait until I'm there to start.

On a related note, what's with the damn games that take you from the initial startup right into a cutscene and then into the game with NO chance to set your controls or audio/video options?

Splinter Cell Blacklist, Dirt 3, F1, over and over I go from the lame "nvidia"/"AMD" sponsor screens into PLAYING in 30 seconds and I'm flopping around/crashing because I can't adjust the controls first. mad

If you've got a console, fine, it's a gamepad, nothing to mess with, but to disallow going to the menu FIRST in a PC game, even a port, is unconscionable.

I HATE that. They do it for cinematic effect but all it ends up doing is being a clusterfrack.

I also hate games that provide plot details on loading screens and don't have a "press ___ to continue" so you can actually read / listen to the thing before the game starts.

@ Jedi & Peally. I agree, it's always a pain. Especially since most games have terrible 'auto detect' graphics setting and you're thrown into an unplayable mess.

@adlabs & Murphy. I was talking more about the splash screens before the main menu rather than before starting gameplay.
I'll admit I'd pretty much forgotten about loading times since I got a new PC a couple of years ago. Used to be able to go and get a drink, come back and Il-2 was still loading. Now I barely have time to even read the word 'loading' smile

That's what I'm talking about, 'push start' (fire up the computer)...it loads.
Then enter password....it loads.

Then I'm ready to start gaming.
Unless you have win8....it takes time to load the programs.
Not minutes...but about 15-30 seconds.

Win7Pro is a bigger system, much more to fire up, takes time.
I didn't even like waiting for XP to load.
I just hate looking at a screen, 'loading', wasting my time, when I could be getting a coffee smile .

If you don't like the 'splash screen'...some games just skip it when you hit the space bar wink
IL2/FB HSFX/DBW is like that.
