Is it possible to make an empty transport helo pick up a random squad of infantry in a mission? I have tried making a mission with an empty helo, giving it the MOUNT IF "EMPTY" (or similar trigger) and placing an infantry squad near the helo. Cannot seem to get it to work. I am sure there is a blindingly obvious solution I am overlooking.....

Yeah, that thread doesn't really address what he's asking.

xanth, try setting the "mount if" parameter for the ROUTE, (or waypoint) rather than the chopper itself.

Your empty chopper when then stop and pick up any nearby troops until it is full.

So it firstly depends on how close is "near" in your scenario?

Next did you land the helo at the said waypoint? smile

xanth might be along shortly to answer for himself, but fwiw, I tested and verified that if, in the mission editor, you set a chopper to any flavor of "mount if ..." it has no apparent effect.

I right-clicked on an empty Blackhawk in the mission editor and set it to "mount if this unit is not carrying troops." I routed it with march orders directly over a squad at treetop height, and it happily flew right past them -- whether they were its own native troops or a random unit.

But when I instead set the ROUTE or a PRECEDING CHECKPOINT to "Mount" or "mount if ..." the chopper dutifully stopped and landed about 100 meters short of the squad and picked them up.

Setting the route/checkpoint logic can be done in the editor, in planning or on the fly.

So, the answer to xanth's question is yes, a chopper will pick up "random" friendly troops: He needs to set the logic for the route, not the chopper. Beware though, the chopper will continue to stop and load up any friendly infantry it encounters until it runs out of seats or you intervene to give it a new route.

Whether the inability to set the logic for the unit itself is intended behavior or a bug, I don't know.

Unnecessary. The ai pilot will land to pick up troops automatically from any flight height if he has route-based "mount .." orders.

No IMHO, that means it needs to be fixed.

A helo shouldn't be able to load troops if it hasn't landed.

I think you misunderstood me. I meant human intervention -- "did you land the helo at the said waypoint" -- is unnecessary when the route (or waypoint) has "mount ..." orders. The ai pilot will land to pick up the troops, regardless of the flight height of the route and waypoints.

The OP mentioned "mount" logic, so I'm assuming he's wanting to script ai pickup of random troops. If we instead talk about flying the helo from the observers position with wasdqz, then yes, he'd need to land (z) himself and use the context menus or hotkeys.

Thanks Splash1, seems like route is the key to getting this to work :-)
