I always fly as the flight leader. When the mission is to "support ground forces preparing for an attack" what is my assignment? Am I to attack enemy ground forces at the front near the assigned area? Or are my orders to patrol well above the area, similar to an offensive patrol along that section of the front?

I had a similar question, but after doing several of them your latter supposition appears correct.

Supporting ground forces seems to mean patrolling above the area, in which the ground attack is to take place and keeping naughty e/a away from the PBI.

I agree. Also, just to clarify, when I'm looking at the mission files for these types of missions, I can find two that can be confusing.

This is a Combat Air Support (CAS) mission where there is a "loop" command which means to circle the desiganted area where the "troops" are located. Usually there is air support in the briefing somewhere.

Close Air Support
"startloop"
"endloop"
Provide air support for troop movements

This is ground attack mission to "strike" the "troops" at the given front location. Usually attacking is in the mission briefing somewhere.

Maybe OT, but can you make an visible impact on the war? Or you actions don't count as much?

JimBobb wave No, damage to ground structures from one mission is not carried forward to the next. When you shoot down an ace, they do not die. You cannot change the course of the war.

yaan98, I think both those mission types that you list are currently 'ghost' missions - they appear in the Fighter MissionTypes folder, but in all my testing and playing I have never seen either of these missions selected. The only Ground Attack missions that appear to be selected (and only for a limited set of Fighter units) are: Balloon Busting; Railyard Attack; Airfield Attack. So far as I can tell, only some French and British (and possibly USA) Fighter units are coded for Ground Attack, and not always the ones that you might expect. This might also mean that the Balloon Busting mission is not a mission currently available to German Jasta units, as I do not think that they are coded for Ground Attack and I have never seen a Balloon Busting mission selected for a Jasta pilot. In my latest MissionTypes mod (v.4) I have tried to work around this by changing the Railyard Attack to a Ground Attack mission by changing the name, briefing and the target from Railyards to Troops; and for the Germans I have tried to recreate 2-seater Schlachta attacks by re-wording, briefing, and re-targeting the Bombing Behind Enemy Front Lines mission, and by creating a ground strafing Contact Patrol type mission (Infantrieflieger) - but these really only work if the player is Flight Leader.

How could a single flyer make an impact on the war?
Even Manfred von Richthofen couldn't have achieved that - not even if he had stayed alive.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Bletchley - I generally fly German and have not had any ground attack missions. However, I have had balloon busting missions while flying German (with Jasta 2 or 11, not sure which one).
