I'm on the fence on this one since I heard the gameplay was speeded up compared to MoW, also wonder if the netcode is improved? Anyone involved in the beta and care to comment?

Pre-release (beta) is next thursday and I wonder if it's worth it for an slow old fart like me wink

I'm not holding my breath on this one.

It appears to have had a minor graphical update, but the UI still looks exactly the same.

It still has the insane amount of micromanagement that plagued MoW. How someone would enjoy that, is beyond my understanding.

Still no skirmish mode either.

I love the game.

Wouldn't say it is sped up from MoW 1, but the game play is certainly different. Call in reinforcements during missions rather than story based objectives with set troops.

They are working on the net code. No longer uses Game Spy, but the Steam network. I've found the beta to be stable, others have not. Hence the delayed release date.

There is definitely micromanagement again, but I love that. Units in squads will share resources when near each other, that helps.

Single player performance is improved greatly. The AI and a few other things can now use multiple cores on the processor.

Men of war is easily my favourite strategy game, but if you didn't enjoy the multiplayer part on the previous games it is unlikely at the moment you will love this one. The single player mission in the beta is a vast improvement over MoW AS 1, but I still prefer MoW single player missions.

I played the first MoW:AS and really liked it. I tried the other MoW games but never really got into them. Vietnam and the others just left me flat.

I mostly played it coop with a few friends against the AI.

Does the new one play like MoW:AS or like one of the others? I'd like to get something to replace MoW:AS (we played it to death) but I already got burned on COH2 (COH I also played to death but my group was left cold by COH2 and we've barely done a dozen hours).

It's much more like AS1, though the mission that is in the beta is far more structured than AS1. There is only one mission at the moment so it is hard to say. The MoW series was made by different teams. These guys made MoW 1 and MoW AS 1 (and 2). Which many people feel are the best in the series.

Thanks for the input, ordered it now. Hope more western players picks up this game so the community gets bigger. Since my Russian is non existant it's sometimes a bit hard to get teamwork going.

I do agree with Apocalypse that things like re-arming/re-fueling could be a bit less micro but it's still great fun in MP even if I most of the time sucks at it smile Another thing why I liked Soldier/FoW/MoW is that there are no tedius basebuilding (you can build defences like barbwire, mines etc).

With good teamwork between your fellow players it's a blast to play 8 vs 8 on-line on the larger maps!

I've never played any of the MOW games but they look good and I'm especially intrigued by this one. Is the single player mode really an honest single player experience? The Steam description made it sound more like a classic mp game that has a "single player" mode with bots.

Is there story?

It's not that kind of a game. The "story" in MOW:AS1 boils down to "fighting WWII". The missions can be played SP or coop with other humans against the AI with no changes in presentation. You're either advancing, holding and defending, or getting wiped out. smile

There's less "story" than Company of Heroes had, but it plays pretty much the same except units are smaller, maps are bigger, and there's no base buildings. You get points for kills and/or holding points and you redeem those for reinforcements that enter the map or strikes from arty or air support. Otherwise it plays just like that RTS to a large degree.

It's probably closer to Wargame: Airland Battle/Euro Escalation set in WWII than CoH, actually. Except the maps are probably more open terrain than MoW, which have lots of cover and/or buildings.

I have yet to try the Wargame series as well. The upcoming one looks very interesting as well.
