Im setting up a mission and I have stuff going on in the north, South, and East. Im wondering how many AWACS I would need? I was planning on 3 one for each area but started to wonder if one E3 in the center of the map wouldn't work for all three areas.

Basically I have missions going on around Krasnodar, Beslan and in the DF sector.

I'd think one would do it.

Two for sure.

Are you going to plan for replacements in case they get shot down?

As for now no replacements. I have fighter escorts planned for the AWACS and Tankers. I might add a random enemy fighter formation that may or may not attack AWACS and Tankers. Probably set it up as a percentage of some sort so they dont always show up when I run the mission.

I started making a basic SEAD mission. I had 2x SU-25T for SEAD 2xA-10C for clean up after the radar is down and 2x 15C for CAP. Now this mission has snowballed into a huge thing lol. I got about 70 fighters(all of which are player flyable) 8 Helos and 3 tankers and 2 AWACS. I have a Intercept mission with Russian Fighters and Bombers come out of the Belsan area. There is a Long Range mission down towards the DF sector. I have a mission along the Russian/Georgia border with JTAC support. And then I have an Escort mission, Basically I have 2 Hueys escorting a VIP in a vehicle to base and then a Yak-40 taking off and some jets escorting it out of the area.

AWACS orbits are based on the range of the radars which is technically classified but practically speaking is limited by the curvature of the Earth. That means roughly 250 miles. I don't recall the ranges on the Black Sea map, or if DCS uses that metric or not (as far as AWACS radar ranges) but I do know it seems I get pinged by AWACS radars all the time in missions that have them even when I'm FAR from them.

So I think 2 should do it even though one might be enough.
