Actually that looks pretty solid, Nibbio. I do like the recent map update, but if you can pull off something that's accurate and doesn't look like pixels painted with smudgy watercolor, that would be awesome.

Nibbio;

You are on to something good there! The visuals I see look great! How does it look in game so far or have you tried it yet?

In game it looks passable. WOFF can display a bitmap 4096x4096 but it covers a square area of 1000x1000 miles, of which our area of interest is just a small portion. So when you zoom in the low resolution stands out.

However for me the important thing is that all the features of the terrain are represented, especially the little wooded areas among the fields, that, together with roads, are important for navigation.
It's almost ready, will probably upload it later today. wave2

Thanks for the reply Nibbio. Your explanation is appreciated. Look forward to trying it.
Are you making it a JSGME compliant install? Would be nice to know in advance. If not, I will make it so on my system.

Best Regards;

I'm sorry but I don't know where to start with JSGME.
Installing the map is just a simple matter of backing-up and replacing a single file inside WOFF\OBD WWI Over Flanders Fields main folder, called map_background.dds. I was planning on just uploading the dds file.
However if you can explain to me how to make the process JSGME compliant, I'd be happy to do it.

Nibbio;

I will PM you later today and give you a good explanation for future use. Right now I am tied up so I will get to you later on. JSGME you will find is very useful and eliminates the possibility of making mistakes moving files around. Have a good day and we will dialogue on this.

New inflight map https://www.dropbox.com/s/iw11zpgsnmd6nt5/newWOFFmap.zip

Installation instructions:

Backup or rename the file map_background.dds found in the folder \OBDSoftware\OBDWW1 Over Flanders Fields, and copy in the same folder the file map_background.dds provided in this zip.
Whenever you want to go back to the original, just replace it in the same folder overwriting the modified one.
If you would like to check up the map before installing it you can view it with Irfanview, freely available at www.irfanview.com.

Features:

The terrain map was generated from the data contained in the WOFF landclass file, so it should be completely accurate.

Every wooded area is represented in its correct position. The same is also valid for urban areas, villages and rivers; their shape and position is exactly the shape and position they have in the 3D world of WOFF.

Roads OTOH are a different matter: they come from an original CFS3 bitmap in low resolution, and looked horrible once resized. Therefore I have re-traced them by hand, at least for the area of interest of the Western Front. As a consequence their accuracy is approximate, although I verified with a number of test flights and they seem to be generally in the right place.

Sorry I didn't include the railways, but my hand still shakes after re-tracing all those roads smile
Maybe in the future I'll find a way to read the vector data and produce a more accurate version of the road network, with railways too.

The place names are of course the same as those in the original map; I also added the names of the rivers. Please point out any mistakes in the names and I will correct them.

Cheers,
nibbio

p.s. this is just a zip file containing the map and a readme. I'll prepare a JSGME compliant package as soon as I get Robert's instructions

Don't have time to fly around, but I hopped in to see how it looks.

Amazing, Nibbio! Very nice to have that much more detail.

Thanks!

Just checked it out in-game. Amazing work. Nice to be able to zoom in to the max and not have all the city and town names super blurry. Really happy with this mod!

Thanks Nibbio for all the time and effort you put into this mod, so as to make WOFF that much more enjoyable then it already is.

The fact that it is not exact lends to the immersion and challenge of navigating in mission.
