Wasn't sure whether to put this here in in screenshots. Seemed slightly more appropriate for this forum, but mods, feel free to move it if I got it wrong.

So, this is my second major project in blender. Never really finished the first one, but it was a good learning experience anyway.

It's a Canadian LAVIII infantry section carrier. I'd say the model is about 75% done. Texturing hasn't begun yet. The pintle mounted MAG58 was a previous project (my first attempt at a 3D computer model). If people are interested, I'll post updates in future.

Wow! Great looking model Chris. We got to play with these while trying the various wheeled armored vehicles in the former 3-2 Interim Brigade Combat Team before DA finally chose the LAVIII. Back then the US didn't want the 25mm turret because of it's inability to supposedly clear the wing box in a C130 and I secretly suspect the Armor community didn't want another 25mm wonder in their realm that would surpass the Bradley both on the roads and put more boots on the ground.

What do you plan to do with this? Mesh for a potential game or just 3D computer modeling? Anyway, great looking wheels.

Interesting work. I suppose in physical terms you could argue this has no place in the model section. However this being 2014 and this being no less of a scale representation than any other image, I vote it stays. Truly remarkable "model". How long does this kind of work take ? What do you do with it once complete ?
Forgive my ignorance smile

Thanks all.

strykerpsg , I heard that the armoured types' manhood being threatened by infantry 25mm turrets played a big role in your not getting these turrets, but that's just the rumor wink

Anyway, I've been away from this project for a couple of weeks, got back at it over the weekend, and this is where I am as of tonight. Still a bit of modelling left (undercarriage and tires mainly), then onto texturing.

Nickmow, you can probably just think of this as being a digital scale model. It sserves the same purpose. I won't be putting it in a game or anything, if that's what you mean.

To answer your question about how long it takes, that's a good question. I don't actually know. But I guess there's probably about 20-25 hours of work between the last picture I posted and these ones. But that's not straight, nonstop work, that's playing with it for maybe ten minutes, then going somewhere else and maybe watching videos on the internet, or reading here etc, and all while watching TV.

(I threw the bottom picture in just for fun. That's yours truly in the crew commander's hatch [on the right]. You'll notice it looks different than the turret in the model. That's because in A-stan we had these retrofitted blast shields on the turret. I hated the way they looked, so I'm not adding it to the model )

LOL! I can neither confirm nor deny that statement but having worked with many former HBCT types, the platforms made many converts into believing in it's capabilities, as well as shoring up it's shortcomings as well.

Great looking model nonetheless. Thanks for sharing and it's a shame it won't be starring in any sort of future sim. It would make an excellent addition. Please share the finished product when done. I look forward to it.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
Very wonderfully detailed... I'm sure it'd serve well in any kind of game or render scene.

Excellent model.

How about contacting the guys writing Combat-Helo simulator to see if they could use it in that ?

Seems a shame to me to produce a very detailed model like that without it being used somewhere.

Cheers,

Andy

Great work.
You should consider sending it to esim games the makers of Steel beasts.

The problem is, I don't think this model would be very game friendly. Being that's it's meant for simple static rendering, I spared no expense with vertices, so it's already very high poly.

@stryker, I'll definitely post updates periodically in this thread, then a series of renderings of the final product in whatever setting I decide to place it in.

[edit] 72,087 vertices to be precise, and counting.

Got started on texturing tonight. It'll be all hand painted except for areas where there's text or symbols.

Looks a bit clean for being on a stretch of dirt....... shower

It actually looks stunning in detail Chris. You're certainly doing her a great justice. Ironically, the proposed weapons upgrades may actually incorporate a 30mm for us, go figure...

Keep posting the updates. Always looking forward to them.

Matt

There's a lot of great programmable ammunition out there for 30mm these days, so you guys could do a lot worse than to put those on your strykers, along with a robust FCS.
