well, for SP, RoF has basically three different offerings:
a) fixed campaigns with pre-designed missions like the St.Mihiel DLC, or the "Spiderweb" (free) made by Waxworks which have recieved pretty positive reviews. So: great experience but limited campaigns/missions
b)beta-career: more dynamic, joining a squad and flying generated missions.. nice, but it can be repetitive after a while and definatly not a 100% finished and polished mode. Lots of potential, but also some frustration.
c) Pat Wilsons Campaign Generator an extra programe generating missions for RoF, and lets you live and tell a career story. A free mod, made with a lot of dedication and lots of challenging mission types. Some absolutly swear by it and while for others it is not really a full replacement for a perfectly working ingame career system.
yeah, and quick missions and so off course. it is getting better, and you can test it for free with the basic version. So what´s stopping you?
(ah, and IMHO: don´t do the default training career, that will likely give a wrong impression...)

Hi danc this post seems to answer your question about flying against aces, in Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator, anyway. http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=394&t=39808You also get to fly with aces in PWCG. MvR was my squadron leader in this campaign, though on this particular patrol I was leading...and I had Ernst Udet in my flight, in his distinctive Fokker triplane: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3830846/Re_Best_Current_WWI_Sim#Post3830846RoF's free and so is PWCG so you can try it out with the free Albatros DV or SPAD XIII (all the other planes come as AI-flown) and buy whatever other planes you fancy flying, if you like it. It's not the SAME single-player campaign experience as OFF (or FE for that matter), each has their good and less good points and which you prefer will depend on what's most important to you. The mission comparisons in the second link above were my attempt to 'compare and contrast' each of the current 'big three', specifically from the standpoint of the single player campaign experience.

I would highly recommend Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator. My enjoyment of this sim has been revitalised after installing this recently. I found SP mode to be very sterile and somewhat boring with no immersion otherwise, but I suspect I am comparing it to my online experience in other sims as I cannot play RoF online due to poor connection and somewhat dated kit.

Well, Thank you all for your help and I loved the flight modeling in this game, best ever but.... I know I am going to catch hell for this but this has happened to me so many times that I just have to vent..... Ever since downloading and playing this game (100% off line) I have been having problems with: browser pop ups, security breaches (norton), email inquiries, identity probe problems, etc. It just was not worth it for me because when trying the campaign upgrades suggested I still did not get the kind of , for me (off line), immersion that I get from OFF and Red Baron. I deleted the game and am in the process of trying to clean up my system a bit. I truly wish that the makers of this game could invest in some serious campaign modeling. I know, on-line face to face, is the way of the future but the flight AI here would be great to apply to a comprehensive computer experience off-line. Thanks again.

I'm not exactly certain what connection you're making. I can assure you that the vast majority of us had no such issues. Otherwise, I think you would see the forums flooded with people making those same observations. On the other hand, there are more than a few people who have made similar comments about the SP side being disappointing to them, but no one is talking about having technical or security issues. At first I gave the devs credit for owning up to shortcomings and expected the campaign component to get completed before too long. Over four years have passed and the campaign is still beta. Honestly, this is disappointing to say the least. Nevertheless, I have persevered and bought every plane.
This sim is so great in every other respect that it would be a shame for it to never reach its full potential with a robust, dynamic single player campaign.

Don't confuse campaign and career. The campaign, a series of scripted missions, was there from day one. There are others you can buy or get for free around the web. The career didn't show up until the game was already out for 2 years IIRC. As for the "beta" moniker, does it really matter? CloD's final release was less polished than the career beta is. Is it just a label, there to help deflect criticism, whose usefulness has passed? I don't know, but it's immaterial.
The terms are no longer really relevant anymore, especially in an online-connected continually updated title like ROF has been. What's more accurate is probably "development complete" vs "in progress." By that metric, yes, the career is still in progress, but it's largely complete.

To paraphrase JediMaster, I may be confusing campaign and career but if it's the former you're interested in, Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator is the way to go.

I have indeed confused "campaign" with "career". Mea culpa. I hope the beta career continues to evolve.
I will have to try PWCG. So many fans can't all be wrong!
