if anybody is interested:

all you have to do is backup \OBDSoftware\WOFF\OBDWW1 Over Flanders Fields\ui.xml and edit the first few lines of the file as follows (edited parts in bold)

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<UI Units="metric">
<Colours leaderColour="0x2F405000" formationColour="0x2F00600C" friendColour="0x2F204090" enemyColour="0x2FB0201C" deadColour="0x2F101010" neutralColour="0x2F505050" playerTargetColour="0x2FE0E000" missionColour="0x2FFF98C0" aiTargetColour="0x2F8020E0" frontLineColour="0x2F101010"/>
<Labels mode="Identity" distanceFactor="1" fontSize="VerySmall" backgroundScreen="n" dropShadow="n">
<Dots on="y" symbol="." colour="0xFF505050" fontSize="VerySmall" backgroundScreen="n" dropShadow="n"/>
<MindReaderEx on="n" colour="0xFFFFFFFF" fontSize="VerySmall" backgroundScreen="n" dropShadow="n"/>
</Labels>

Also removed "drop shadow" from the "dots", making them less obtrusive and more like real dots.

The level of transparency of the labels can be adjusted from FF (=255 in hexadecimal notation, 100% opaque) to 00 (=0, 0% opaque, i.e. transparent). 2F corresponds to 47/255= 18% opacity

Nibbio will move this to the FAQ section shortly.

Warning as always guys: if try any edits such as this make backups and do not come to support with issues we'll tell you to uninstall and reinstall to fix anything broken.

I made a copy of the original ui.xml and made the edit in the copy which I placed in JSGME, thus leaving the original untouched in the WOFF directory. Thus, I switch on the changes via the JSGME without any risk to the base game.

Nice work!

This is the kind of "personal preference" changes that are always appreciated.

Actually, the labels without the white highlighting are very hard to see for ground objects. I was flying over my home field and could hardly make out the label. it was so faint I couldn't read it. I guess you have to custom to suit.

Good point. I think I will fiddle with the opacity.

I usually toggle labels on and off just to get a feel for whats happening around me in the WOFF world.

If they are too faint to see clearly I guess that is kind of defeating the point.

I wouldn't know where to begin! If it's any help, I will try to explain. I have my WOFF directory installed in C\OBDSoftware\WOFF\OBDWW1 Over Flanders Fields. I have my JSGME installed in the OBDWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. This gives me a Mods folder within the directory. Within the Mods folder I placed a folder called TransparentLabels. I placed my edited ui.xml file within this. To activate it within the game, I simply move the TransparentLabels folder from left to right in JSGME and it works. To remove it, move it back from right to left in JSGME.

Noticed that the recent patch reset ui.xml to the original setting, so I edited the file again. I just find that transparent labels add much to the appeal of the game, and probably many more people would use them if they had the option.

So I humbly suggest that the devs, when and if have some time on their hands, implement an option in the workshop; for example a slider to set labels transparency would be just great.

Sorry UI.xml changed because of additional features (the content of UI.xml changed) so was in the patch - it was not sent out to purposefully overwrite your personal changes.

I doubt that function will be added.
