Just wondering how many of you flying gentlemen use the TAC display when 'immersed' in your cold windy pilot seat?
As radio's were not in use during the Great War on a plane to plane basis, and hand signals could not really define a specific target during a wild dogfight, I rarely use the thing.
Is the TAC a component of the original CFS3, or is it something that has been introduced by OFF?

lol, but that is the magic of immersion... half of the fun is realising you are lost and trying to get back to your correct patrol route and link up again smile

I use the TAC for giving orders to my flight, but most of the time I keep it switched off.

The TAC was already in CFS3, unless I'm mistaken. It's been so long since the last time I played the original.

It's an aid to enhance awareness and vision obviously a 2D flat monitor cannot convey all things. We have improved it a lot since CFS3, or OFF. The information on there as as per our AI and vision code etc. You can also now see new shapes and orientation details for aircraft. Even see balloon shapes and so on. Also new messages appear there such as engine failure.

Only craft you are close enough to ID will be marked as enemy, and only those you should be aware of etc. But for fullest 'realism' turn it off for sure.

You bought a TIR and you didn't immediately bust it of the box and start using it:) When I got mine, the wrapping couldn't come off fast enough...really hard for me to play flight sims without it nowadays. Had a near heart attack last year, one of our dogs ate the cord, luckily I was able to repair it, otherwise we might have one less dog in our house:)

I don't use it. I think being lost is part of the immersion. I do use labels, though. That's enough aid for me.

I don't like using any Dots or Labels overlaid on enemy planes so I use the TAC to keep situational awareness of what is nearby. I leave it at the default 1nm radius so that I can still try to spot stuff further away, although it's almost impossible for me to do so.

I love my TrackIR but I don't think that it will ever feel natural to me regarding head movement. It still has limitations in how I use it, especially since I have old neck injuries that prevent a wide range of movement and causes some aggravation in regular use. So I don't crane my neck around as much as I should. My peripheral vision is pretty wide IRL so I don't normally have to turn my head that far anyway. Unfortunately that can't be modelled in the game since the custom FOVs don't work. The TrackIR still helps for keeping my eyes on stuff in the forward hemisphere when dogfighting and keeping stock of a situation, otherwise I tend to start using the Target Select and Padlock hotkeys (mapped to the HOTAS) for an enemy aircraft on my tail.

For people without TIR, the TAC is indispensible since it displays so much SA info. Being able to see the general direction each little plane symbol on it is facing is wonderful.

I haven't used it yet, but want to play around with it a bit to see what minimalist settings I might be ok using as an adjunct to TIR. As noted by many, TIR is just about indispensable, but it really is still so limiting without peripheral vision.

Has there been any official word on whether Oculus Rift can/will be supported when it comes out?

Because that would be life changing. smile

Yes, I use TAC. No apologies here. With the bad weather (in which real planes never would take off) and limited visibility, I consider it a matter of use it or get lost. ahoy

Its simple HT... If I find I can't navigate at the given height I stay under it, if its too risky to navigate or fly under it I pancake at the first available airfield. The various maps that have been updated recently allow me to navigate quite well... I'd download them and print them out mate smile

I only use it briefly when I want to order my wingman (when I'm a wing leader) to attack any enemy flight or any ground target in particular or to checkout what waypoint is currently active for my flight. Otherwise I don't use it!

Yep, I only use it to issue commands. But I've only ever been flight leader once, so I've only used it once.

I fly without TAC, labels (except dots) or HUD. Just me, my wingmen and my Western Front map on the secondary monitor. Getting lost is indeed part of the fun, but after a while you get to know the frontline like the back of your hand and don't get lost anymore (as it should be).

You can imagine not having a TAC makes things quite exciting in a dogfight. I've seriously given thought to buying a nice silk scarf for the amount of time I spend turning my neck around while playing woff.

I use it, this sim has quite a steep learning curve, so even if I see myself not using it some day in the future, I find it too useful now to skip it.
