I am not articulate enough to write an in-depth review, but would like to explain to anyone inerested why WOFF is so much fun, at least for me.

You are placed in a complex world, with which you can interact, populated by a high number of AI pilots, gunners, troops on the ground etc, with believable behavior. After some 15/20 hours in various campaigns I found no real game-breaker, no instances of those frustrating non-realistic events which break the suspension of disbelief and suddenly make you realize that you are just wasting your time, while many other useful and necessary things demand your attention (like going to work, emptying the dishwasher, cooking, setting the table, eating, going to the gym for a workout, feeding the bunny, watering the plants, whatever...)

The graphics are outdated, but crisp and pleasant to the eye. The graphics effects are tasteful, often subtle, never excessive and, most importantly, believable. The scenery is fantastic. I can't comment on the music because I only want the wind and engine roaring in my ears, the hammering of the machine guns, and sometimes, when you are very close, the screams of the enemy pilots going down (another very nice subtle effect, or maybe a figment of my imagination winkngrin ).

The same can be said for the flight models. They are believable, and not so hard to master as to become necessarily the only focus of the game. You can quickly learn the strengths and weaknesses of each a/c and then you are ready to exploit them in combat and try to master the real focus of the game, which is survival in a very unpredictable and harsh environment. Maybe the turn rate of the Sopwith Camel is not 100% accurate, or the climb rate of the Fokker DR1 a little off? I wouldn't really know and honestly couldn't care less.

In a word, WOFF is exactly my idea of fun, at least while sitting in front of a PC winkngrin so let me join the chorus of praises showered on the developers. Well done!

p.s. I think the original CFS3 team also deserves to be praised; there must have been a very good design basis in that game to allow something like WOFF to grow out of it

Thanks nibbio, all helps for the immersion we aim for. Yes the 3D engine has been around for some time, but I think you'll agree some of the scenery and aircraft are looking rather top notch and fairly current considering smile
We have also enhanced the engine massively in many areas, and have our own AI and other features in there, so we moved the goal posts some way.

You don't get the music whilst you are flying... only while you are in the campaign or planning screens, workshop etc.
I found Matt's music score to perfectly fit the mood and image of the Great War whilst I am browsing the map and choosing aeroplanes and checking on the enemies aerodromes, his units and personnel.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Hey that's alright, everyone has different tastes. The music is there to enhance the immersion, to put you in real deep, if you allow it to.

That is a very good compact write-up you made there, nibbio!

My advice for the music: it won't be there during your sorties, so no need to switch it "off".
When you leave it on, while you fill in the new data for a new pilot, or while you check the
"Duty Room" or the "Intelligence Reports", then it may accompany you even deeper into the
whole immersion; may make you feel like being there back in time - emotionally.

Me, I like the new score a lot - it fits well together with the music of OFF,
and it keeps that feeling of a "well-balanced walk on the emotional high-wire".

Switched on the music and must say that I was very pleasantly surprised, and will keep it on.
For me it's a first, as a rule I can't stand game music and prefer Beethoven's late quartets tuner
Matt you should be proud of having replaced good old Luigi...

lol, thanks, but don't feel that you have to, I'm a big fan of his piano concertos and symphonies, now that's epic music.

I feel much the same way, game music has generally been terrible over the last ten years or so. only a handful of titles have had theme-based scores. most have been atmosphere and sparkle, trying to be much more than they are, music's equivalent of a hollow graphics-based game. Read the score article if you get a minute, it provides an insight into the processes behind woff's score.

I was a little concerned with what those coming from rof and other flight sims would make of it, having had virtually no music if any, to suddenly being faced with a full unashamedly thematic score.
