I wasn't in charge of buying the turkey this year.

My wife and Grandma (her Mom) bought this free range natural turkey.

You mean the Butterball turkeys we had in the previous years were not natural?

Were they conceived in a test tube?

biggrin

Happy Thanksgiving!!

that is not my wife

It started when the Pilgrims landed in America and celebrated with the American Indians over a feast whenever they had a good harvest season.

Then the Pilgrims slaughtered the American Indians.

It's also a day to be with family and thankful for what you have.

No matter how bad things are for you, there is always going to be someone else worse off than you are, so you still have something to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Is it me or is community hall becoming more and more like the Jerry Springer show?

Bingo and well said.
After starving you appreciate your meals and learn to be thankful for what you have. It's a good reminder for that.
Unfortunately, a great concept has become terribly overshadowed by shopping and sports, so most don't even think about it anymore.

When did this happen?

I know that the Indian nation was pretty much wiped out, but I thought this was at the behest of the US gov't by way of the US Army.

The Pilgrims gave thanks to God, not to the Indians. That is a myth perpetrated by the Progressives.

Quote:
"The real story of Thanksgiving is William Bradford giving thanks to God for the guidance and the inspiration to set up a thriving colony. The bounty was shared with the Indians." There was a thanks to the Indians. They had so much, they had the Indians over. They did sit down, and they did have free-range turkey and organic vegetables. But it was not the Indians that save the Pilgrims, and "it was not the Indians who saved the day. It was capitalism and Scripture which saved the day," as acknowledged by George Washington in his first Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789.

yeah, it's Rush, but do the research.

Oh ya, sorry, Happy Thanksgiving!

No one here has said otherwise.

Thanksgivings as a puritan tradition long preceded the
colonization of New England, but were declared in
response to specific events, not on established dates,
as prescribed in puritan practice, which rejected all
calendar feast days. The practice has presumably
evaporated in Britain along with the puritans.

Regarding the slaughter of the natives, there was a
lot of that which went on, along with an equally large
amount of mortality from european infectious diseases,
but the pilgrims and various indian factions were
already sporadically warring amongst themselves in
various coalitions prior to the first thanksgiving
called at the Plymouth colony in 1623.
