Long ago and faraway (2011), I purchased CLOD. At that time, I was able to fly litterally through hoops to land my Tiger Moth as well as pursue German bombers over Kent. Now I crash to desktop. I have not changed, but the program appears to have forgotten those who were first adapters. My problem is a 3.3Ghz system, running Dx9 ON XP. From the CRDs, I am well suspecting that the program no longer likes XP/Dx9, but System7/Dx10. Is there are faint means of turning back the clock so that the encumbered XP people can once again enjoy CLOD? Is it now swamp gas?

CoD from its inception was more tailored for win7 and 64 bit, but it was always dx9 and that is not the issue

if you wanted your well playing CoD game to stay exactly the same, you would have needed to stop winxp updating itself with new patches, and needed to turn the steam auto update feature off in CoD (or stop using steam altogether by using the modded dll file that is available)

having said this, none of that is really needed to have CoD run well and have it fully updated with official patches (last in late 2012) and the subsequent TF patches (last one released a few weeks ago). there were some people having issues with crashes or RTD's with some of the earlier official patches, but the last final patches resolved this and it was never a major issue. there were some extended threads on 1c's forum on how to resolve those crashes (so have a search for them), but it basically boiled down to the usual common sense:
- reinstall CoD from scratch, and let it update itself
- let steam verify its file integrity, this will over write any potential corrupted files
- make sure your video drivers are up to date etc
- consider moving from XP to win7 64 bit, its a much more stable OS (but you can run it on winXP)
- toss some salt over your right shoulder
- restart the game

if you have crashes and lockups, the problem is in your own system, not in the game itself

sorry, i cant be more help, have a search on 1c in the official forum for people having similar issues, you'll find most of those complaints are pre-may2012, and there were 4 or 5 official patches since then.

Be advised, we got zips in the wire

I thank you both for your thoughtful responses. I recall the beginnings as x32 (XP) compatible. The product was probably aiming at x64 (Vista, System7), but the program was not "launched". It escaped. It appeared out of control from the beginning as I recall the debates of 2011/2012 at SimHQ.

Early patch repairs released by 1C or STEAM made performance enhancements in terms of simulation. Somewhere, the product was upgraded to a state that no longer recognized XP/x32 architecture. I recall it happening during the second half of 2012.

I recall functionning Heinkill missions and training missions which worked (tigermoth flying through training hoops to safe landing). The corporate product went out of control and has been saved by thirdparty MODs and missions. Maybe at initial release it was tailored for a Windows7 x64 future. But it was initially functional in x32 architecture. I was just naively hoping to reset the clock to recoup some of the early enjoyment. Products evolve to meet market expectations. You are correct that the world is now x64, Windows7, Directx10. I am out of time.

Regarding the thoughtful 'conf.ini' edit. Such a 'render' line does not exist in my STEAM/Softclub confi ini. setup:
