Patrocles, Matt: Why would you not want this information available exactly where your focus is? When we first started displaying this data, early in development, it was in fact displayed on a corner, and it was maddening to have to jump your eyes back and forth between the mouse location and the data block in order to get the location-specific info. (For an approximation of this, try to precisely place a unit in H3, reading off the lat/lon coordinates from the message log). So we did the obvious and modified it to appear where your interest lies. In any reasonably sized monitor, it's not blocking your view of the map to any significant extent: And if it happens to overlap a spot that you absolutely want to look at, you move the mouse cursor away and it's off. Simple as that. Are you by any chance using an extremely small monitor?

It is true that Harpoon also has a Big Black Box of Death (tm) (even though it is neither Big, nor Black, nor covers anything with Death). For the sake of simplicity, we can call it the LBBoD [Little Black Box of Death] (tm). The difference between Harpoon and MNO is the fact that a Harpoon player can actually turn OFF the LBBoD with a simple flick of the N-hotkey at any time. In short, a fundamental difference between Harpoon and MNO is that Harpoon allows users to turn off nearly everything whereas MNO users are always forced to find ways around functions that they simply cannot disable; which means fighting the UI instead of the AI.

We'll just agree to disagree. It's not been a show stopper for the bulk of purchasers and suspect its because they're running a high enough resolution so as to make it less invasive. And again, the development team is certainly actively listening to their customers, so the UI will continue to evolve, as did the various incarnations of Harpoon.

Other than sub hunting I Dont need it at all. I think it would be more useful if it displayed info for whatever you hover over like unit information, weapons, unit load outs etc etc. That information would be much more helpful than knowing the temp for every square inch of the map every seacond of the game. IMO.

IMO. Exactly correct. Everyone can probably find a use for the Big Black Box of Death (tm) at some point in time. However, the crux of the matter is the ability to turn it OFF when it is not in use. This simply does not exist in MNO even though ancient games like H3 allow users to control their flow of information with a simple flick of the N-hotkey. The suggestion for allowing user-determined items in the BBBoD has been mentioned previously and is a very good idea! Anything that increases player control is better than anything that reduces user control.

It's been noted on the Matrix forum.....not a show stopper for most but I'm certain they'll entertain it to please more.
