It was extremely difficult for me to narrow it down to 10 but what are your personal top 10 war/military combat films of all time?

My list,

1. Tora Tora Tora
2. Blackhawk Down
3. Das Boot
4. The Blue Max
5. Patton
6. Platoon
7. Apocalypse Now
8. Master & Commander
9. Glory
10. Gettysburg

Hard to arrange them in any sort of order, but:

1: Master & Commander
2: We Were Soldiers
3: Black Hawk Down

Those are my definite top three movies. The other seven are too hard to sort. I do have to include the obvious, Band of Brothers, even though it's not a movie.

I didn't list a couple of shows because they were TV series.
Band of brothers, Das Boot, Gettysburg

  1. Die Brcke (German)
  2. Hunde, woll ihr ewig leben? (German)
  3. Blackhawk Down
  4. We were Soldiers
  5. Crimson Tide
  6. Patton
  7. Glory
  8. Paths to Glory
  9. Saving Private Ryan
  10. Platoon

With great regret I decided to strike three great movies from that list, some of them better films than the rest combined. Arguably Dr. Strangelove is more of a political satire involving some military characters. The Beast is a theater play converted to movie with no realistic tank in it (but still a damn good film). Apocalypse Now (Redux) just pretends to be a war movie when it's actually "Heart of Darkness" transposed from 19th century Congo to Vietnam 1972.

I deliberately omitted TV series, they have so much more time to tell a story, it's a totally different kind of medium in this specific case. Given the choice between TV series and film, "Das Boot" is clearly better suited as a TV series although the Director's Cut managed to close the gap noticeably. "Band of Brothers" certainly is an excellent piece of TV production despite the spotty record of Stephen Ambrose as a historian; watched "The Pacific" once, and it was good, but given the choice I'd rather watch BoB again.
Speaking of "the other BoBs" - movies that didn't make the cut for me were "The Battle of Britain", "Battle of the Bulge" and "The Longest Day". All of them were remarkable productions of their time but somewhat fail as "great" movies.

Which Gettysburg tv series are you referring to? I do know that "Das Boot" was originally a tv miniseries on German tv though.

Ah, I found this info about Gettysburg. From Wikipedia,

The film began life as a miniseries. The producers originally pitched the project to ABC in 1991. ABC initially agreed to back the project, but when the TV movie Son of the Morning Star about George Armstrong Custer received low ratings, ABC withdrew. Subsequently, media mogul and Civil War buff Ted Turner took up the project and filming began, helped considerably when the National Park Service permitted unprecedented access to Gettysburg Battlefield, including Devil's Den and Little Round Top. However, much of the movie was shot at a nearby Adams County farm. Thousands of Civil War reenactors from across the country volunteered to come to Gettysburg to participate in the massive battle scenes.[1]

Gettysburg is a mini-series by TNT which just happened to get a theatrical release as well. Kind of like Das Boot, only in reverse.

An important aspect to consider though is that it was never actually aired on tv as a miniseries.

Some great picks so far!

@Ajay - Some damn good war films have come from Australia. Gallipoli and The Light Horsemen are both very good.

Yes they are classics smile

Funny related thing, i picked up Tora Tora Tora in a second hand dvd/music shop when i was on the other side of town a couple of months ago. Got home and was looking forward to dinner and a movie by myself, cooked dinner and then opened the case..they had forgotten to put the disc in .

Most annoying biggrin

I developed the tendency to avoid war films so now, I could only come up with three. I'm pretty sure that before that, my list was longer.

Der Untergang
Schindlers List
Casualties of War
