Anyone recommend some good books about the Spanish Civil War? Documentaries?

Local Library does not have anything on it, just a few short passage in books about happenings before WW2.
I am looking at the Osprey Series, so other titles are appreciated.

George Orwell's autobiographical "Homage to Catalonia" is one of my favorite books about the Spanish civil war.

I also highly recommend Antony Beevor's "The Battle for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1936–39".

Are there any good movies (in english) that take place during the Spanish Civil War?

It gives a quite accurate depiction of the militias fighting on the republican site. The story of the movie has some similarities to Georg Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia".

If you want to get into Osprey-like coverage of the men and the planes, ships, tanks guns & uniforms (and eitehr like looking at pics or can handle at least captions in Spanish) I would highly recommend:

'Atlas Illustrado de Armas y Uniformes de la Guerra Civil Espanola' by Lucas M Franco (!) and José M García (publ Susaeta)

The same publisher's 'Guerra Civil Espanola -Fotographias Inéditas' is a very good source of photographs, produced large-format, some harrowing, all well-chosen.

Paul Preston has several good books in print on the war, tho I find Beeover's work rather more objective and less inclined to emphasise Nationalist excesses while seeming inclined to minimise or make excuses for those of the Republicans. A controversial business.
