I figured we could periodically bump this message to the top, so that we can easily answer [some of] the questions typically asked by new(er) players ....

*CORRECT ORDER OF GAME & PATCH INSTALLATION*

1) Install MA from your CD. (Note: WinXP/2K users may need to first do the Win98/ME compatibility fix [listed below] to the SETUP.EXE on the CD to make sure they don't have any problems w/ the installation).

2) Next, install Rowan's official v1.23 patch.

3) Install the BDG group's MiG patch

4) Do the No-CD & no intro video fixes.

5) Take care of the optional stuff if you want: custom noseart, kill the jolly rodger, custom sound files, A/C skins, etc.

5) Finally, start MA and do your setup for 3D, sound, game options, etc, then make sure you immediately exit, so you don't have to redo all your settings again if MA crashes on you. :p

6) Done!

To eliminate the opening movie, you just add a "-nointro" switch to your shortcut(s) add it will automatically skip the video.

i.e. the shortcut's target would be:
"c:/rowan/mig" -nointro

If you installed it to a different directory then what's between the "" will be different.

1) Copy the "Smacker" folder (and contents) from the CD into your your main MiG Alley installation folder (c:\rowan\mig or whatever you chose).

2) Edit the "ROOTS.DIR" file in your mig folder (~main installation directory) using notepad and make sure all the lines pointing to your CD-ROM are changed so they are pointing toward your mig folder on your hard drive.

3)You're done!

*PROBLEMS W/ WINXP/WIN2K INSTALLATION*

1) Before installing MA, browse your MiG Alley CD and find the SETUP.EXE file. Right click on it and choose "properties" at the bottom of the list.

2) Go to the "Compatibility" tab and on it, at the top of the boxhe top of the box under "Compatibility Modes" chose put a check in the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" then select "Windows 98/Windows Me"

3) Click OK on the bottom of the box and you should be ready to install.

4) After installation, it's probably a good idea to do the No-CD and no intro video fixes (listed above) as well, to minimize potential problems.

Great list! I went ahead and tried some of the new skins, they were a breeze to install, but I have had some experience at that sort of thing with CFS2. I especially like the new .50 cal sounds! And the new hit sprites, the originals looked so 2d.

A few days ago, I purchased MA - finally! It was the german version, at least I thought so - and when I read the german manual, I feared the worst! This translation errors are terrible! But in my version of the game, the installing procedure asks whether I want the english or the german version. Of course I took the english one, and I´m glad I did it (Can we get rid of these tanks? - Können wir diese Panzer auslöschen? *LOOOL*)!

Maybe your version has this language feature, too?

Hello everyone.

At long last I found Mig Alley in the bargain bin. While I still enjoy playing European Air War, I felt I needed a change. So I'll give this sim a whirl. But...

While installing the 1.23 patch a DOS4GW extender window popped up and seemed to convert something; landscape textures, I think. This DOS window is odd enough, but the executable ended with a string of unintelligible characters and I had to close the window by hand. I've run the game a few times and it seems to function properly. Is this odd behaviour of any significance?

the english and german versions are on the same CD. Just uninstall your german version, set your language to english in Windows settings (Systemsteuerung, Ländereinstellungen), install MA again and revert your windows settings to german. Voila!

Another update for this thing again. Some notes: Sneaky's SimCommander site seems to be MIA and I still don't have an updated link for MASCU. I also fixed the links to the v1.23 patch, and added a link to Ted Horvath's MiG Alley Page.

wish there were some post source code release mods to link to, but things are not looking very good on this front at the moment (talk about a emotional rise and fall there!). Maybe someone is secretly working on some mods in some government lab? I'd love to do something with the SC but I'm no coder...

Well, I'm back (for better or for worse...hehe). I added the BDG site (which was a major glaring omission) and Maususer's skin site. I never could find an updated MASCU site.

I did it outside the quotes and it seems to have worked. "D:\MiG Alley\Mig.exe" -nointro in my case.

Does anyone have MA running on win2000 prof?

Yes. The hardest thing is to install it, if you have an european version with a broken installer. Once you have installed it, and it runs and you installed our 0.80, you should have only little problems. If you have problems installing, check out old messages or start a new thread to ask for more info.

I just picked this one up at a used hardware/software shop but only the disk was included. Can anyone point me to a downloadable manual/keycard?

Very helpful thread. Thanks, Kanajana! I haven't done anything yet, but at least now I know such a thread exists. Isn't it at all possible to have the intro play and to just cut it short with Esc or something? I like the intro and I like to show things like this to my nongaming friends, but I don't have to see it every time I start the game. :rolleyes:

Just bought a re-released (budget) version of the game. Took it for a spin last night (Hot Shot missions), shooting down 7 MiGs in 2 missions . (Note: No, I'm not that good... I managed to do this only with the difficulty in medium-to-low settings. ).

A comment regarding the No-CD fix: I noticed that in my case I seem to have to copy both "Smacker" and "Extra" folders. The program still asks for the CD if I only copy the "Smacker" folder.

I don't remember the content of the file out of my head. But here's an example of what I did.

Let's assume that your CD drive is E: and you install Mig Alley on C:\mig_alley.

First copy the directory "E:\Smacker" (the whole directory, not only its contents) from your CD into your C:\mig_alley directory. In my case, I also had to copy the "E:\Extra" directory into C:\mig_alley.

Next open roots.dir file, find the 2 instances of "E:\" and change both of them to "C:\mig_alley". Save the file and exit.

Try to run Mig Alley again. It should not ask for the CD.

Hope it works. If you still have problems with this, post it here (along with the contents of your roots.dir file) and I'll see what I can help.

BUMPing so I can get to this great stuff easier. I've flown two missions so far with the stock MA.

Wa finally able to install Mig Alley in Win2k. The only part that held me back for awhile was I could not find the compatibility tab. Anyway htis is how to enable Windows Compatibility Mode in Win2K:

Enable Compatibility Mode Properties

The Compatibility-mode technology is not exposed by default. To enable an interface so that you can use this technology for your programs after you apply Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK, where %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in which Windows is installed:

regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll


Use Compatibility Mode Properties

Administrators can use a program shortcut to set the compatibility mode for a target program. This requires that the Compatibility-mode properties be correctly installed and registered on the computer by using the previous steps. To enable Compatibility mode by using a program shortcut:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Right-click the shortcut, and then click Properties.
3. Click Compatibility. This tab appears only if the Compatibility-mode interface has been properly enabled on the computer.
4. Click to select the Run in Compatibility Mode check box to enable Compatibility-mode support for the program.
5. Click either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 compatibility mode in the drop-down box.
6. Click OK to save the changes.
7. Double-click the shortcut to run the program.

NOTE: Be careful if you use Compatibility mode to bypass version warnings in Setup or installation programs. Some programs are designed for a specific operating system and intentionally prohibit use on future versions. These are frequently system-level programs that run at a very low level and have the potential to cause serious problems if installed.

Disable Compatibility Mode
Because you enable Compatibility mode independent of the Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3 installation process, removing Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3 does not remove Compatibility mode. To remove Compatibility mode:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK, where %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in which Windows 2000 is installed:

regsvr32 /u %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll

Administrators can enable and disable the mechanism that improves compatibility with older platforms (also known as Shim Technology) by using the Compatibility Layer Tab. After a shortcut has a Compatibility Layer enabled, the user also runs the program under the compatibility layer, however, the user cannot see the settings in the Compatibility Layer Tab.

Thanks to the thread I've been able to install and get the game loaded without the CD... but whenever I try to start a mission (any type of mission at all) the game just totally crashes me back to windows. I've tried running in all different compatability modes (I'm using WinXP) and still no joy.

Any help please? I didn't get into this game when I first got it but I've now got myself a cool flight stick and thought I'd give it a go.

Do you get the loading screen ?

After clicking on launch mission the screen goes black and looks like it's about to start loading something.... then it quits back to windows.

I'm using my latest nvidia graphics drivers for my Geforce card (admittedly fairly old but nowhere near as old as Mig Alley) and using latest version of directx.

What do you suggest I try to work round it?

update:

I tried loading the game without my Saitek X45 plugged in (just in case that was causing probs) and used the software render instead of my 3D card... it actually got past the load screen and showed what looked like the game screen but in inverted coulours before crashing.

I then tried again with my graphics card and lowered the resolution down to 800x600 to make sure I wasn't taxing anything too bad - and it showed the loading screen just before crashing.

Anyone any ideas? Please

Go Frugal's. I posted a couple of ideas there that might help you. One is run in WIN2000 mode, not Win98/ME.

I and at least one other member here had to replace the smackw32.dll file in the Mig Alley directory with a newer version to get it to run under XP. See this thread:

I'm having this same problem. I had mig running with XP and an AGP card. I now have a PCIe card and it crashes while loading a mission (exception error - mig.exe). Don't know if thats the problem but there is a coincidence.

Got mine to work. In the end I had to set compatability mode to win2k, I can run all graphics options up and at 1280x960 :). Now I just gotta find controls lol

I installed MA last night (used win98 compatability mode on setup.exe), upgraded with the 1.21 patch then the 1.23 patch (win 98 compatibility on both) from Rowan, then launched game (Win (98 compat.) Load times when starting a simple mission were slow (40 -50 secs) and missions with multiple planes seemed to CTD. Applied the .80 upgrade, switched to Win2K compatibility and initial mission load time was 30 -40 seconds, then replays and second missions on same map, etc were <5 secs.

There is a keyboard map utility in the map MA directory that I find useful. Only problem I am having is hat control for view is a little "fast".

also - the Mig 15 only fires cannon - is this historically true? I thought it had both 12.7 and 23 mm guns?

Mig 15 had two 23 mm cannons and one 37 mm cannon . In the sim you can not choose between the 37 and 23 they are fired as one. The Mig 15 was designed for intercepting enemy bombers. The use of heavy cannons and it's flight characteristics reflect this. The F86 was built for the air superiority role, it's 6x50cal guns with higher rate of fire were deemed better by the designers for dog fighting.

Because they are opposites, they make interesting matchups in the sim.

Now up and running and loving Mig Alley all over again. Despite my handle, I forgot how much I loved jets and guns together. My only problem now is that I am running MA on a laptop with 15 inch monitor, and I can barely see those AAA emplacements! This game/era definately needs an update, though - I kept on thinking how much nicer it would look if it had the IL-2 look and feel.
FWIW...I do get very occasional CTD's, but nothing serious. I am only doing quick missions right now, so I'm not losing any campaign progress.
@Vox - thanks for the note. I am noticing that if I don't eject after the second "plink" from a Mig, I usually don't get another chance when I hear the third, just that heart-dropping "arrrggghhh"

Despite MA's dated graphics, as far as I know, it still is the only sim where you can fly these classic jets, against a convincing AI, in a good dynamic campaign.


That could get ulgy...lol I can't see AAA under the best conditions! It's hard to imagine trying to fly MA on a laptop. I ported MA through my digital projector at home and projected it as a 6-foot image, and still couldn't see the AAA ..LOL. I recently experimented with a Fresnel lens. I like it a lot... Gives a good depth of view, almost 3D, and it magnifies eveything nice and BIG...helps my aging eyes.

There is a Mig Alley yahoo group where TheSilkMan continues to add new features to this sim.

Do a search for Mig Alley on yahoo groups and you will find the group MA_Development. You will need to register to become a member.

FYI, the long load times and crash to desktop issues have been resolved on my machine.
I'll create a web page for all these steps at some point, including a link to my easy fixes.

Yes.. only nagging issue is immediate CTD when I try to access the NAV map in flight. Does this happen to you too? Been a long time and a few driver revisions since I looked, so maybe it is 'fixed'.
