Only people with an IQ under 50 watch "Duck Dynasty " so yes I would say the Taliban qualify.

What scared me is that they claim it is the highest rated show on cable. What does this mean for future programing, more Honey Bo Bo's and Duck Dynasty's?

Trust me, my IQ is well above 50.
I have to admit, when the program first aired I thought oh jeez here we go with another "reality" show. I happened to catch one episode and was hooked.

I'm with Ghost. We groaned about it at first, thinking the last thing we need is a show about rednecks, with us living in MS. However, we saw it and laughed our asses off. The one last week when the kids got their wisdom teeth cut out had me laughing harder than any sitcom has in many years.
Did you know that Phil (the father/grandfather) was a QB in college and started ahead of Terry Bradshaw? These people have an interesting story and aren't what most think just by looking at them. The funny thing about it is that they (the family) are educated, smart, witty people, but hidden under those beards you just don't expect it. Maybe not Si, but he's definitely witty with a very good dumb guy act. They're a nice family, and we like seeing that on tv for a change. It's always funny to see them from high school and college "pre-beard". LOL
...and my IQ has always tested much higher than 50. Lighten up, not all "reality" tv is bad.
I tried watching this once as well as Swamp People (alligator hunters) since my father and I regularly fish and canoe some of those same bayous. Nope, couldn't tolerate it as all, guess I'm just not cut out to watch reality TV (except an occasional COPs).
Honestly, if it wasn't for a little morning and evening news and my father's weekend ball games, I'd kill my satellite TV. Love the TV itself but with my own DVDs.

I think you mean the middle-east, not the Taliban. Many parts of the world have that same ideology. ...and yes, they joke about it, but are fully American.

To each their own of course but I guess I'm just not in the "mainstream" when it comes to entertainment preferences.

I had reservations about it too. Especially when you see the intro it still makes my stomach turn because it appears as though it will be the same ol' garbage.
However that being said, like Ghost, I find myself attracted to it. Certainly its a staged show to a degree, but these folks are smart cookies and extremely funny. Its edited well too with many of those "hearing cricket" moments when you're just laughing at the humor of it. I think its very much more family oriented and I think that's their mission. The endings with everyone at the dinner table reminiscing about the day's prior events with narration remind me of Wonder Years more than anything.
And the father/grandfather has a video where he sums up quite elegantly and very articulated who Jesus is, what He came to do, who He is to those who put their trust in Him, and what the Christian faith is in a nutshell.
My original point was their culture sees bearded men more masculine compared to a clean shaven individual.....but that's out the window now lol.
Well, beards are very mainstream and trendy in many large cities- the guys that have them are anything from computer programmers to baristas. Not generally what are considered masculine occupations.
I get the historical notion that beards tended to portray wild and tough, or body hair is linked to testosterone, but it's probably about as accurate as an indicator as people who wear glasses are automatically thought of as smart or intellectual.

But that sounds to me what's typical of 'reality TV'- it's not 'reality', or I guess anything can be defined as reality. What people construe as reality shows really typically don't hold up if they are scrutinized. In this case it sounds as the show is produced and a certain image is portrayed.
So it doesn't sound based on your description that they come from a dynasty of kin folk stretching back aways, it sounds kind of contrived.
No one gets out of here alive.

Oh, and Duck Dynasty men could kick terrorist ass.
Depends on the terrorist. Terrorist is such a broad idea from a loner who detonates a bomb to well armed, trained, ideologically organized groups. Look at the trouble terrorists have given to the security and military forces of Israel, India, the US and its allies, the Russians, among others. Certainly 'reality TV' stars aren't somehow a cut above that.
On the subject of beards again, this episode of Portlandia nails it. This is why 20 something hipsters are called ironic, for their emulation of things or styles that they really don't come from or aren't suited for.
I like Duck Dynasty. It's a family friendly show with a conservative message which 99% of the entertainment industry despises. For it to be a hit is a good thing even if some of it is silly or staged.
