Hi all I am giving Flanker 2.5 another round in preparation of LOMAC, but I have a problem: upon landing I find the game stutters/freezes for a few secs before resuming gameplay. This happens either in internal or external views.
Anyone else have this trouble?

How much RAM do you have?

I'd recommend installing another 512MB stick of RAM.
I had pauses with Flanker that disappeared after I upped my RAM from 512MB to 1024MB. Flanker really loves RAM, for some reason, more than any other game I have.
My comp specs: 1.7Ghz P4 1024MB RAM GeForce Ti200 video card w/64MB RAM FortissimoIII 7.1 audio card Windows XP Home Edition

CaptCanada,
It is DEFINATELY a RAM problem. WinXP needs (and uses) more memory than Win98. Under Win98, 512 meg is plenty. Under XP, it's simply not enough.
The problem is the sounds.sfx file. If Flanker doesn't see enough RAM, it does not load all of this into physical memory, but rather loads it into virtual memory (swap file). Then, when certain sounds load for the first time, you get a pause/stutter as it is loaded from the hard drive's virtual memory. You've probably noticed that after the sound plays and stutters the first time, it usually plays smoothly after that. When you restart Flanker, the stutter happens again. Adding more RAM to your system will cure this. Or you could dual-boot and run sims like Flanker under Win98. Much better Flanker performance.

my guess is that Flanker loads the sounds.sfx file into virtual memory regardless of how much physical memory you have; i have 1GB ram with ~270MB free when running Flanker 2.51 and still get stutters ( screenshot here /130kb/)... edit: tried running without virtual memory and sure enough all sound related stutters are gone

edit: tried running without virtual memory and sure enough all sound related stutters are gone I disagree, even though it might be happening on your machine. If you're running a WinXP version, it could be that. Under Win98SE, after going from 256 meg to 512 meg RAM, I lost all the sound-related stutters. The sim's overall stability and performance increased too, with steadier framerates. However, under WinXP pro with 512 meg, Flanker 2.51 runs much like it did with only 256 meg RAM. I'm surprised that Flanker would run at all with virtual memory disabled, even though you do have that much RAM. Mag...

Not on topic, but I am getting Flanker shortly. My pc won't ever be able to run Lomac! Is there a good reference for newbies to start?
Have got the 2.51 patch and some campaigns already, anything else to look up?
Foot down, head down...

yeah, I'm running Windows XP; and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if it's their fault, especially with such an old game... nevertheless I'd rather buy a Macintosh than go back to Windows 98 (now if ubisoft would only release IL2 and LO:MAC for the Mac ) I'm surprised that Flanker would run at all with virtual memory disabled, even though you do have that much RAM.
actually the only thing that complains about the lack of virtual memory is Photoshop 5 ; apparently only because it requires having a swap file on the system partition (it runs ok with only 2MB of virtual memory... go figure ). Even Cinema 4D, Corel Draw 11 and all the games that I have (IL-2:FB, Lock-On demo, Neverwinter Nights) run without a hitch...

Hey, thanks all! I was going to mention than Flanker2 ran fine under my old Win98 config (PIII 866/512 PC133 ram) I was going to increase my virtual cache size, but I guess that won't help. I have a few other problems with Flanker2 under WinXP, though not sure if it is actually XP's fault. My Logitech Wingman 3D stick throttle control is not being used by Flanker2 even though I have the throttle option checked. And, sometimes the game freezes or gives an runtime error and quits with an error message. Any more tips? Thanks!

I had the same problem with the 2.5 patch (with my TM Afterburner 2) and it disappeared when installing 2.51. i wouldn't know about the freezes though.. it never happened to me...
