I am sorry for your loss, but it is good that you got time together and retained some element of control over your father's passing. I lost mine in 1977 after he had an inoperable brain tumor. He cought pneumonia, which is what actually killed him, and I was the one who had to make the final decision not to prolong his suffering. It was what he had always told me he wanted. He died in a veterans hospital, and had retired from a career as a veteran's service officer, so it was very familiar to us both.

I have only come to this post late. I'm very sorry for your loss. Believe it or not the hard part comes now. My father had a massive heart attack on a golf course 2 1/2 years ago now. He only made it to A+E because he worked at our local Hospital and so had Doctors in his team. Our family went to A+E where we saw him trying to fight the staff while lying in bed. Apparently this can be a normal thing. Although he was moving he was never really concious. He spent a week in intensive care before being flown to Waikato Hospital in Hamilton for more intensive care. I was unable to go as I was starting University. I received many calls from Mum and my bro telling me he seemed to be getting better. The weekend before I started Uni my Mum called. I was expecting to hear that he was finally talking only for her to tell me that he had died on the operating table after the Doctors had tried to save him after his heart had stopped again. Apparently the damage to his heart from the first attack was just too much. He would have never have been the same man again had he lived. In hindsight it was the best thing. I am only just now coming to grips with that realisation.
I'm sorry for the long post.
Like many others here, I just want you to know that you're not alone. Be there for your family. Whatever emotions you feel or express in these coming weeks WILL be the right ones. Don't repress anything. Talk freely and let your family know that you love them.

He passed on Saturday evening.
I sat with him all day. My mom and aunt came in around 6 for the night shift, I gathered up my wife, kids and sister and we went across the street to Copelands to celebrate my sisters birthday. We sat down, ordered our drinks and my phone rang. It was mom, he was gone.
Thanks again, to all of you for the kind words and shared experiences.
They helped and I appreciate it deeply. I am sorry to hear that. Almost how my Grandmother went with my parents. They went to the cafe across the street and she started slipping quickly. They spent the last 30 or so minutes with her. I'll continue to pray for strength.

Sorry for your loss UTR, but I personally feel you all did the right thing.
Everyday I get to spend with my mom is a blessing, everytime I get her to laugh or smile is wonderful.
Best of luck in the future sir, and I am so glad you got to spend time with your dad before he passed.

I am sitting at my dad's PC as I post this. I am helping my mom get all of his online accounts sorted so she can determine her financial situation.
On Saturday, my dad had a massive stroke. He has been on life support since. I got here yesterday and have been with him as much as I can. Today the doctor showed us his latest scans. He is not coming back. All he does is squeeze our hands when he hears us talk. He can not open his eyes or even breathe well on his own. The docs said we could keep him alive indefinitely but, he is not expected to return to any semblance of the man he was.
I am ok with the plan except for that I know some of him is still there. He would not be squeezing our hands if he was totally gone. That is what is killing me. If he was a complete veggie, it would be sooo much easier.
If I could just talk to him 1 more time. One day, one hour. I just want to discuss this with him.
I can't breathe, I am constantly nauseous. Sorry to hear this UnderRadar. I had to take my mom off life support.

Sorry to hear, UTR. Condolences to you and the family.
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
