Hello-

We've just recently seen a few posts from Gunship! users describing an odd problem. Textures on helos and cockpits seem to be "stretched", with gaps appearing between adjoining faces. (Death_Reaper_X posted a pic of this in this thread .)

This has been surprising because GS has been incredibly well-behaved graphics-wise since day 1. (It runs nicely in a window, for cryin out loud...) We batted around the idea of it being a Radeon issue, but nothing conclusive emerged.

Well, Ky3Mu4 just now made the observation that when he upgraded from DirectX9.0 to 9.0b, he began to see what seems to be the same problem.

I'm still running 8.1 on my creaky old 98SE/650 machine, and things look fine. I hesititate to upgrade mine yet because of the hassle in undoing DirectX. I'm a skeered.

So: How about a poll?

Tell us if you are currently running Gunship with DirectX 9.0 or 9.0b, and what OS you have, and if you are seeing anything weird in the Gunship world. (Bobby, I happened to see your post in another forum that you had upgraded to 9.0b.. Any Gunship woes?

According to the MS FAQ , there is apparently some significant changes in the way 9.0b handled multiplayer, too, so folks with various DX versions may have probs flying together in various sims.

So lets rack up a few data points here and see what we got. Thanks for your help with this.

cheers
fng

Also, hmm try turning off any forced AA, and upgrade video drivers to cat 4.10.

Oops, put on the spot ! wink

FNG, real sorry, I still need to REinstall Gunship! :o

But certainly will do in a matter of days (hopin' tonight), and get back with ya smile

(basically what's keeping me is my Suncom combo: It only has 4 slots and they are taken (*); but maybe I will free up one slot for Gunship; or else I will just play stick and keyboard but that'd be half the fun. Hmm, quite a dilemma there)

My specs:
Athlon XP 2000+
RAM 256 DDR
GeForce 2 GTS 64 MB DDR
Saitek X-45 HOTAS
Win 98 SE/DirectX 9.0b

The only thing i reinstalled, was DX 9.0b - everything went well before this / i installed it from LOMAC CD/. Im running Gunship! on 1024x768 32 Bit color depth. May be there is some issue between DX 9.0b and Win 98 SE?
#%&*$#, almost forgot - latest NVIDIA drivers: Forceware 53.04

Hmmm.
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I guess 9.0b per se is not the culprit here...

Any ideas? I'm stumped. confused

D_R_X, in that MS FAQ about DX9, I noticed these bits:

Q:When coupled with a DirectX 9.0 compatible video card and driver, you may see a visual improvement in games that were designed with DirectX 9.0 in mind.

A: Improvements to DirectPlay let computers within a Windows Me or Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing network connect with each other, as well as with players elsewhere on the Internet. Users with modern UPnP network routers no longer need to configure them for DirectPlay, because DirectPlay will open and close the multiplayer gaming ports as needed.

Q:Are there any known issues with regard to DirectX 9.0?

A: Due to enhancements in the way DirectPlay functions, it is strongly recommended that all users who want to join or host multiplayer games upgrade to DirectX 9.0. A user with earlier versions of DirectX may have trouble joining or hosting games, or my see a significant performance reduction when playing with users who have 9.0 installed.

Some video card manufacturers have updated drivers that are specifically designed to work with DirectX 9.0. It's possible that these drivers will benefit performance, quality, or stability of games running DirectX 9.0. Please make sure you check with your video card manufacturer to see if such drivers exist for your video card.

They seem to be saying that some vid cards may not be compatible with DX9, at least not without an optimized driver for it. Although I seem to recall you saying you tried new drivers... Is it worth asking the vid card manufacturere about this?

I guess the good news is that it doesn't seem to be a Gunship problem, per se.

Of course, the bad news is that all your sims are effed up. frown Did you do a search through all the SimHQ boards to see who else is having this problem?

cheers

Well with the texture tearing in TAW, it looks like its FSAA related, the lowest FSAA setting on my Radeon 9500 pro (catalyst 3.10) is 2x... is there any way to turn it off COMPLETELY?

Wouldn't checking "Application Preference" in the ATI control panel do it?

exactly, turn off FSAA, click app preference because then Gunship will tell the card "hey, screw your advanced features, I don't need no stinking FSAA" wink Tell us how turning it to application preference goes, try both direct3d and opengl.

Hmm... looks like texture artifcats. Try the compatibility options under opengl and d3d, try enabling alternate pixel position. I'm not sure if that'll help or not. Also, if overclocking, take off the overclocks.

Anyone have anymore bright ideas? It's tempting to just blame Radeon, but it would sure be good to nail this down...
