I've got the procedure down. I can find the Tanker and set up refueling. I get close and start to over correct.
So far I have only been able to impale myself on the boom. banghead

My joystick seems pretty responsive, maybe a little too much so. is there a setting I need to adjust somewhere?

Tip #1, the fuel filler cap is OUTSIDE the cockpit. :p

Um, how I manage (when I manage) is to get stabilized about 0.5-1.0 ship lengths behind the contact position and give it a little throttle increase. In 2 seconds or so when it starts to have an effect I immediately return the throttle to the old position. The tanker refuses to extend over 50% to make contact so it's OK to drift backward after contact.

After contact it's relax relax relax look at the FPM on the HUD horizon line relax relax relax. And then I gently bounce between 75% and 25% boom extension. Usually I do best in the higher end of the zone so most adjustment is longitudinal.

Open the refueling port slipway door and trim A-10 at the same speed of tanker.
"READY" light. (When "Disconnected" push Nosewheel Steering (NWS) Button)
Then, try to keep this position.

I finally had some success after setting my joystick axis curvature of 28 and a deadzone of 3 or 4.
Also dont concentrate on the boom. Instead watch a fixed spot until contact.

1.) adjust stick sensitivity, you don't want an overly responsive control setup
2.) don't chase the boom, concentrate on flying formation with the tanker
3.) learn to estimate in advance minor speed changes
4.) practice, practice, practice

I found two additional things very helpful with flying accuracy in general (and AAR in special):

- Remove the joystick from the desk. My Joystick is now beneath my seat resulting in a very comfortable and relaxed body position. I wasn't even aware how cramped I was by holding my arm to the joystick before. This was kind of a life changer for me.

- Reduce the spring tension if possible. This can be easily done by compressing the springs or completely removing them and solves basically the same issue as the joystick placement: less tension, more relaxation.

For me precision flying is far less frustrating now
But in the end, the need for practice remains.

i think you put it in the wrong spot.....

Having a good curve to give you better mid-range on the throttle helps alot, so you're not over accelerating etc.

Heres some missions that may help you learn inflight refuelling.

It also really helps to be in a mission that was made correctly. You should be going about 220 KIAS behind the tanker at at least 10,000'. Not ever mission maker knows this and will make situations that are hard to perform AAR in. At weird speeds the KC and A-10's attitudes are unusual which affects both visual cues and the boom envelope.

At least the A10 has the refuel port in front of the cockpit and not behind like the F-16. biggrin

I'll look into it and adjust mine when I get a chance.

It's hard because the ME speeds are ground speeds so you'd need to also correct for winds as well to be perfectly spot on.

My missions have clear weather calm so that its as easy as possible for new pilots to connect to the tanker which is the whole point for both MP and SP versions. The most realistic refuelling missions are the ones Sabre made for advanced pilot trainning they are very realistic and finding the Tanker at night is a mission using TACAN in bad weather. seehearspeak

I wrote this in another forum for a guy having similar problems. It was helpful to some.

Wiggle your toes.
I've read this as a way to relax in at least two books where a pilot talks about refueling. I've tried it myself, and it helps; it doesn't make it automatic, but it does help.

Also- if your flaps are deployed plus all the stores you're probably not maneuverable at all... Probably too slow to effectively maneuver. Try bumping up the speed on the tanker a bit assuming you built that mission to practice.

Anything from 195- and up I suppose. I see 220 mentioned. I never tanked that fast but as long as you can catch up before running out of fuel then you should

Aerial refueling is easy. Just practice.

After many years of flying flight sims I have never been able to crack aerial refueling, just cannot do it and I guess I don't have the patience to keep at it when flying a sim becomes more like work it's not fun anymore. Like landing in the Huey, I know I'll never get it so I won't fly it.

It's certainly not easy but if you keep practicing you'll get better. One thing that is nice bonus is that once you get better with aerial refuelling formation flying suddenly becomes easy as pie.

I remember when I started flying the A-10C back in the beta days "formation flying" meant we were roughly in the same area, with roughly the same heading and speed. Roughly.

Fast forward two years and we're flying (almost) wing-tip to wing-tip during landings.
